Hi there,

I live in Bangkok with a tourist visa at the moment, I rent a condo with long term contract of one year and I would like to buy a car and/or a scooter. I'm a bit confused about what is required to get the certificate of residence but based on what I've read before on the forum the only requirement was a long tenancy.

"A friend of mine got a confirmation from the condo-building he is living. That was enough.

I showed them my 3bb internet bill. Was fine as well.

So, I went last week to the immigration office at Chalermprakiat Government Complex and they asked so many requirements that it seems very cumbersome to get that paper.

Because they asked me for one year VISA, a 90 report card and a TM30 form.

Is it possible to get a summary of what is the latest requirement?

Many thanks in advance for the info!

Bangkok immigration at Chaeng Wattana will not issue a certificate of residence unless you are doing reports of staying longer than 90 days consecutive days in country to them. You are not going to be able to get one from them since you are on a tourist visa entry.

You only choice is to get one from your embassy.

Thanks for your message.

One thing I would like to clarify the certificate of residence from your embassy, it is a document that certify where your primary residence is in Thailand? so from a legal point of view you become permanent resident of Thailand for your home country, is it right?

What about if I want to keep my first residence in my home country? Does it work also to certify a second residence as well?!

Getting a certificate of residence at your embassy in no way would change your status in you home country. Some call  it proof of address rather than residence.

Correct me if I am wrong but reading your first post  I am certain your not aware of how these certificates work. You say you are looking at buying a car or scooter or possibly both. If you buy a car and a scooter you would need 2 certificates. One for each purchase. If you need to do a Thai driving Licence which you will need to eventually do, then you would need another for the DLT. They are kept for each transaction. You do not get them back to use again.
You don't just apply for a Certificate of residence and keep it in your file alongside your passport and show it when you need too. That's not how they work. I also believe they are only valid for 30 days off the top of my head.
I would also be a little wary of putting a lot of money in to long term rentals, buying vehicles etc when your here on no more than a Tourist visa.

Why should he "be wary" just because he´s here on TR visas? I mean, if he plans to stay many years here and is well below 50 and/or doesn´t want to pay for TE then TR visas might be his only options, won´t they?

Yes, there´s always risk with the visa regime but then again TiT and everything can change at any given moment. But it surely isn´t practical to only live by a "what happens if ..." philosophy.

Ubonjoe sorry to contradict you but I have contacted my embassy today (Belgium) and they told me; in order to get the certificate of residence from us you needs to de-register from your city in Belgium and then register at the embassy with your new address in Thailand as your main residence.

I think Belgium and perhaps another one are the only ones that have that kind of rule. You cannot even get a new passport from that embassy if you are still registered in Belgium.

What about the British Embassy?
I have the same problem. I work in the uk but live in Thailand (offshore rota), so I only stay 3 weeks max. If I get a certificate of residence from the Embassy do I risk them registering me as non resident in the uk?
That would mean I have to pay 150% of any NHS medical treatment I recieve in the uk despite me being a uk national and paying 2 million baht in tax a year.

I did want a Thai driving licence but it looks too much hassle. I may just keep getting an international driving permit from the uk every year.
Any big disadvantages with doing that?

The UK would not change your residence if you got a proof of address from them.

Your international drivers license would be accepted as long as you don't stay longer than 90 days at a time in the country.

Thanks Joe. Is the proof of address only valid 1 month?
If so I will have to make sure I get the driving licence completed in 1 trip to BKK

I am not sure the proof of address has a validity date like the certificate of residence from immigration does.

Ok. I will try to do it in one trip to BKK anyway and ask about the length of validity to inform others.
Thanks again Joe
