Creating a Will in Thailand

Featured Replies

Has anybody created a Will lately and if so could they recommend a decent lawyer? Im live between Bangkok and Pattaya so either locations.

Thanks.

I have but without a lawyer. Much the same as UK do it yourself kit. Signed and witnessed by head man and head monk. Perfectly legal.bi have also done the same in English and sent a copy to my daughtets in UK so there can be no doubt about my wishes.

You will need to have a separate will for each country, if you're British and live in Thailand you'll need two wills, one for each country.

In Thailand you have several choices:

The cost of using a Thai Solicitor to make a basic will is around 5,000 bhat in the North of Thailand.

You can write an Amphur will which costs around 100 baht but this requires you to identify all account numbers and details of large items specifically which means the will must be changed every time you make a large purchase or open a new account. Some Amphurs will not accept a foreigners will.

The will you sign must be in English otherwise the probate court can assume you haven't understood what you've signed.

You require two witnesses to sign your will, they do not need to be people of a certain standing, just two strangers who are not mentioned in the will.

It will help matters if you can name an executor of your will.

There's loads of really informative threads in Thai visa Forum on this subject, I urge you to do a search and read them.

Thanks for your response. Very informative. I will investigate further.

Wills and codicils are fine. Leave everything to foreigner/relative living abroad. Don't make yourself worth more to Thailand dead than alive.

What a load of nonsense.

I am worth more dead than alive, to my wife, who is the sole benefactor in my Thai will.

If she wanted me dead, why has she taken care of my every need for over 3 years since my accident?
