‘Flawed’ EHIA for Thepa coal-fired plant approved

SONGKHLA: -- The Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) on the Thepa coal-fired power plant has been approved over strong objections from opposing groups.

A committee of experts met to review the EHIA on Thursday evening, concluding that the EHIA had been approved, moving the project one step closer for the construction of the biggest coal-fired power plant in Thailand in Songkhla’s Thepa district.

 

The next step for 2,200-megawatt coal-fired power plant project will be a review by the National Environment Committee.

 

The proposed coal-fired power plant has been heavily criticised by local residents and academics who have argued that the EHIA did not provide full and accurate baseline data regarding the surrounding environment and impacts to the ecosystem and local people’s livelihoods.

 

Opposition groups also claimed that there had not been proper public participation during the EHIA study, meaning the assessment was flawed and should be rejected.

The people who run Thailand, are so out of touch with the environment....they've wrecked the islands, wrecked the forests, destroyed wildlife, polluted everywhere unabated, and think coal fired power generation is good!

They just can't improve their Jurasic brains!

I realise that it's not much of an option but they really néed to go to garbage fired power plants before they're buried under the garbage mountains around the country, the old out of sight out of mind caper is ok until you run out of places to hide it.

Just who are "the committee of experts" to approve the EHIA ?  Surely the approval should have been by the government department responsible for environmental protection.  But I guess that would mean a Minister having to put his name to it !!!!!

they're in for a BIG surprise if they try to ram it down our throats in Krabi:

WE IN KRABI WILL NEVER ALLOW THE COAL PLANT!!! 

they've tried every trick in the book, but ALL of us are vehemently opposed,

except for the corrupt kamnans & governor who have been thoroughly paid off...

Deemed irrelevant by Prayut who invoked Article 44 for construction of the Krabi plant.
