Former President Joe Biden will attend the memorial ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City marking the 25th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks, NewsNation reported on Wednesday.
A spokesperson confirmed Biden’s plans to the network. The announcement comes just under a week after White House officials said President Donald Trump would commemorate the anniversary at the Pentagon rather than at the World Trade Center site.
Biden And Other Former Leaders Expected
NewsNation said that, alongside Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are expected to take part in the Ground Zero ceremony.
The New York Times previously reported that Biden’s wife, Jill Biden, and former first lady Laura Bush are also expected to attend, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The anniversary next Friday marks the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. A total of 2,977 people were killed.
Trump To Mark Anniversary At Pentagon
Unlike the other living presidents expected at Ground Zero, Trump is scheduled to attend a ceremony at the Pentagon on 11 September.
White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told Fox News Digital that the president also plans to honour 9/11 first responders and New York Fire Department officials at the White House on 8 September, ahead of the anniversary.
The New York Times reported last week that Trump decided not to attend the Manhattan ceremony after an allegation that he had been barred from delivering a speech. Trump has denied the claim.
The National September 11 Memorial and Museum has prohibited speeches by politicians at the ceremony since 2012.
The Times reported that Trump pushed back on the report, singling out White House correspondent Maggie Haberman as a “Fake Reporter”.
Events In Dallas And Ireland, With Vance In New York
Trump is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas on 9 and 10 September. After the Pentagon event on 11 September, he will travel to Ireland on 12 and 13 September to attend the Irish Open at his golf course in Doonbeg.
One person briefed on the matter told the Times that travelling overseas would be easier for Trump if he left from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland rather than a commercial airport in New York or New Jersey.
Vice President Vance is expected to attend the Ground Zero ceremony in New York on the administration’s behalf, NewsNation said. Other White House officials will be at the site of the Flight 93 crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
