Canada Escalates Trade War With $20B US Tariffs

Canada has introduced retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of American goods, alongside new support for businesses and workers, as Washington and Ottawa move further into a trade dispute between the two countries.

The measures, announced on Tuesday, match the latest U.S. duties on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Canada said the counter-tariffs will apply from September 8 and will cover imports across around 700 product categories.

Tariffs Begin On September 8

Canada’s retaliation comes after the Trump administration imposed new 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports, effective from Saturday, following talks between the two countries that ended without agreement.

Canada’s new duties run at three rates, depending on the product. The government said imports subject to the package will face 15%, 25% or 50% tariffs.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the response would be paired with support aimed at protecting workers, farmers, families and firms. He said Canada would apply counter-tariffs “dollar-for-dollar” and provide a “multi-billion” assistance package in parallel.

The White House and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Scope Of Goods And Sector Impact

Canada said the counter-tariffs were calculated using 2024 trade figures. The affected goods account for nearly 4.5% of Canada’s imports from the United States.

The Canadian measures include a 50% tariff rate on steel, aluminium, furniture and clothing. A 25% rate will apply to cheese, appliances and some seafood, while a 15% rate covers electronics and tools.

Carney Says U.S. Wants to 'Destroy' Canadian Industries

Industry analysis suggests the U.S. tariffs are narrower in relative terms, affecting about 5% of Canada’s exports to the United States. However, trade analysts said the impact could be concentrated in sectors already under pressure, including wood products such as kitchen cabinet manufacturers.

Canada’s list of retaliatory items also includes prepared foods, perfumes and toiletries, plastics, lumber, wood pulp and paper products, carpets and clothing.

Political Pressure Cited By Ministers

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the Canadian tariffs were designed mainly to protect domestic businesses, but also to increase leverage ahead of U.S. midterm elections on November 3.

Joly said Canadian retailers should ensure competitors do not access the Canadian market “in a better way than” their own products. She added that some of the targeted goods were selected to apply pressure to states in the United States.

C$7.5 Billion Support Package

Alongside the tariffs, Canada unveiled a C$7.5 billion package of measures intended to support small and medium-sized businesses, with funding focused on improving company cash flow and backing workers affected by the new duties.

A federal lender, the Business Development Bank of Canada, will provide part of the assistance, including interest-free loans ranging from C$2.5 million to C$5 million.

Joly said businesses would not be required to repay for 36 months, a period that would extend through to the end of the Trump administration’s term.

According to Trump’s trade adviser, Washington offered Canada a “fair deal” but Canadian politics poisoned the negotiations.

Carney learned something dangerous: Every time he attacks Trump, Canadians reward him politically. So instead of de-escalating and closing a deal, the incentive became to keep the fight alive.

And then comes the most insane part: Carney’s political success from anti-Trump rhetoric made compromise harder, not easier.

If true, Canadians didn’t just lose a trade deal because of economics. They lost it because fighting Trump became politically more valuable than actually making a deal.

The only things insane on this thread are your posts, classic victim blaming. You're out of oxygen.

Just take everything?

Never mind the law eh? I hope you were never involved in judiciary.

Yes, why not, the Canadians stole all their 33 Trillion USD of natural resources from the Amerindians. It would be beautiful justice, and a measure of restitution for its own theft from the Amerindians if the United States obliterates Canada, which stole from the Amerindians.

It's perfectly just. The United States can distribute a good portion to the true owners, the Amerindians.

It's not like the Canadians made good use of this obscene amount natural resources they stole from the Amerindians. What have Canadians ever done for the world? No products anyone wants, apart from the natural resources themselves. Canadians just use the resources to fund useless lives. America, however, has given the world countless important gifts, America should take the trillions of natural resources these Canadians are squandering.

Disgraceful.

How do you think Australia got its natural resources? Did it win them in a game of Blackjack with the Aboriginals? No, the Australians stole those resources. As did the Canadians. As did the Americans in fact. As did the British. This is the way nations have always operated.

Don't be so naive. And don't talk about "moral highground" when you come from a nation of criminals yourself.

While I agree, as many others have advised me you are simply responding to a troll.

That was hundreds of years ago, would you like to go back to 1066?

It's what a rules-based order is supposed to do. You want to go back to might is right.

Go suck a turd.

Unable to counter any of the points you default to insults. That’s peak liberal who's safe space got popped. When the facts don’t work, attack the poster. Even ‘out of oxygen’ is weak when you got nothing left.

It was 2003 to 2011 when the US fought a war with Iraq, that was clearly about oil resources. And Iraq only has 11 trillion USD of resources. Canada has three times that amount.

Of course Canada should be invaded and its obscene natural resource wealth, which it stole from the Amerindians anyway, should be annexed by the US.

It's not a question of right or wrong, merely of who has the bigger army. That is the US. Trump is being angelic in not using it.

Apparently there is now an app which is spreading across Europe like wildfire.

Using the phone camera and pointing it at an item on a supermarket shelf, the app informs its user whether the item is made in America.

The Canadian boycott of US liquor and travel may just be the beginning.

The aspect of this that you failed understand is that Canada won this trade deal just like Iran already won the war and just like China wom the victory over dumb Trump tariffs.

The more Canada can isolate itself from the US and the more successful it is at finding alternative trading partners the stronger Canada will be in the long run. Carney and most Canadians know this. This is another case of Trump the trash man picking on the wrong adversary and underestimating the resolve of the Canadian people.

I understood that Canada “won” like a guy who still has his shoes after the wallet’s gone.

Iran “won” by watching its proxies get flattened. China “won” the tariff war by losing customers and calls it strategy. Isolating from the US isn’t strength. It’s mid (at best) economy quitting its biggest buyer and calling it independence. Carney didn’t beat anyone. He sold less-bad terms kept his Brookfield paper and hoped nobody noticed the alternative was worse.

Trump didn’t pick the wrong target. He picked the one that still thinks geography is leverage. Carney sat in Beijing and said the China partnership “sets us up well for the new world order.” That’s on record. Same guy who called China Canada’s biggest security threat, then went shopping for a new patron while his own book is loaded with US holdings and China-tied Brookfield exposure.

This isn’t Canadian resolve. It’s a banker hedging the country and playing politics with the US midterms on the taxpayer’s dime.

Sure... "spreading across Europe like wildfire" Only thing that spreads in Europe are illegals but let's do a fact check on your claim:

Peak for this joke (app) was January 2026 driven by Trump/Greenland tension nothing else. Made O’Meter claimed a one-day spike (~50k downloads, ~150k photos) and later said 100k+ downloads with users also in Germany, Spain, Italy, France.

That is a news spike and nothing else but maybe you can feel good about it. Makes no difference in real life.
