One would have no chance if caught in the middle of that raging torrent.

Nepal has sure had it's share of disasters, with earthquakes, yearly flash floods and animal attacks that take hundreds of people yearly. Flash floods seem to always hit poor areas, people relying on waterways for life yet are living too close to them to be safe. India, next door, with it's huge population, gets hit by natural disasters every year, along with the diseases from dirty water.

Glacier collapse unleashes deadly flood across Nepal

A catastrophic glacier collapse has been blamed for a devastating wall of water, mud and debris that tore through Nepal and Tibet, killing at least 165 people and leaving more than 1,300 missing. Entire villages have been submerged, bridges swept away and hundreds of tourists cut off as rescuers race into the disaster zone.

A wall of ice, rock and water roared downhill

Scientists believe a vast section of glacier snapped off and plunged nearly 1,200 metres into a valley north of Kathmandu. The impact pulverised the ice and dragged huge quantities of rock and sediment into the river, triggering a tsunami-like surge.

The resulting torrent thundered down the Bhotikoshi and Trishuli river systems, carving a path of destruction stretching for dozens of miles. At Galchhi, water levels reportedly rose by as much as nine metres in just 30 minutes.

Villages vanished beneath the mud

The disaster has devastated communities along the river, destroying homes, buildings and vital bridges. In Tibet, Chinese state media reported three deaths and said 558 people remained missing after a mudslide struck the Gyirong Port.

The force of the collapse also produced a seismic signal equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 event, according to the US Geological Survey. What was initially reported as an earthquake was instead linked to the enormous landslide.

British tourists caught in the catastrophe

At least 33 British tourists are among those reported missing, including children. Tour operators said groups travelling towards Mount Kailash lost contact after crossing into Tibet, while communications were disrupted across badly affected areas.

One tour operator said the entire area around the border crossing had been swept away. “Even the Tibet immigration office,” he said.

Rescuers face a race against time

More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police personnel have been mobilised, with helicopters delivering food, tents and emergency supplies. But widespread power and internet failures, thick sediment and destroyed infrastructure are making the search increasingly difficult.

The disaster has also intensified concern over the Himalayan environment. UN data has shown Nepal losing almost a third of its glacier ice in just over three decades, with melting accelerating sharply in recent years as global temperatures rise.

International rescue and aid response were quick to come to the aid of Nepal.

South Korea despatched an 11 member rapid response team, India disaster response teams were mobilized and China deployed large scale response personnel. United State send a disaster response adviser.

There is 1 Israeli missing and 643 other people .

Many scientists have long warned that Global Warming and temperature increases, especially in areas such as this, will have catastrophic consequences.

The local area is WAY overpopulated.

There are large glacial lakes in the mountains which, as melting continue, will release FAR MORE water than this tiny event, tiny by comparison.

WHY do people always PRETEND they did not know the risks, when these predictable events occur?

There is FAR WORSE on the way.

OVERPOPULATION of these areas is one cause.

CO2 released in atmosphere is the other cause.

The main problem is building homes and businesses close to waterways. Oceans, rivers and streams all can rise when weather conditions are extreme. This has been seen ever since that type of construction occurs with earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, floods and hurricanes.

Building structures, and populating areas, in FLOOD ZONES is for.....FOOLS.

When FOOLS do this, then they pay.

DUE TO OVERPOPULATION, and price of land increases, and for a few other reasons, humans continue to build where they should not build.

There isn't any legitimate way to reduce population, although zero growth or a bit less is the only way the earth will be saved. People and their actions start at home, where they learn how to relate to others, and when that fails, many go out into the world to use others, be promiscuous and not take care of the children they create, which keeps those actions going through another generation.

Access to birth control, and education.

Why add Texas, as if it's a place where unwanted babies are being born, when it's all over? Africa yes, as they, and other poor countries, are increasing the population, many of them without fathers around. This happens in Thailand and SE Asia also, even though the birth rate is slowing down here.

Texas has thousands of people that have moved in from all over, especially California and the east coast, as the housing is lower there.

Texas leads the US in cattle and oil production, as well as sheep and farmland . It ranks 26th out of all states. An above national average in high school graduation and number one in economy. . If Texas were an independent country, its economy would rank as the eighth largest in the world.

Many of the missing foreigners are Indian nationals. The area affected is the Rasuwa–Langtang–Tibet border corridor, an area heavily used by Indian pilgrims travelling toward Mount Kailash.

So then, the REAL QUESTION these people, and the world, must ask is:

WILL these People be so foolish to, once again, build where they have been warned NOT to build?

They will.

And, Glacial Lakes are forming, and weakening, day by day.

There will be many more disasters of this kind, if humans don't heed obvious risks.

China has warned of a “high risk” that a newly formed lake near the Nepal-Tibet border could breach its banks and send another surge of water downstream.

The warning comes after Wednesday’s deadly flash flood, which scientists believe was triggered by the collapse of a mountain glacier into a river. Hundreds have died in Nepal, with many more missing, while more than 550 people remain unaccounted for on the Tibet side.

Lake swells as unstable mountain threatens chaos

By Friday, around 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated behind a debris dam at the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers.

Officials warned that another three million cubic metres could flow into the lake before the weekend, raising fears of a breach. The lake had already begun overflowing on Thursday before an avalanche deposited an estimated 50,000 cubic metres of ice debris into the water.

Rescue operation halted as danger rises

Chinese authorities ordered preparations for emergency evacuations as rescue operations were suspended around 7km from Gyirong Port, a major crossing between Nepal and China.

State media later reported that the upstream threat had been brought under control and rescue work resumed. Engineering teams are now monitoring water levels and weather conditions, while drones are being used to deliver equipment and supplies.

Experts warn the mountain is still unstable

Geoscientist Jakob Steiner said further collapses remained possible, particularly if more material crashed into the lake and displaced water.

He warned that a breach was unlikely to produce another huge deluge on the scale of Wednesday’s disaster because the lake is relatively new and shallow. But released water could scour already weakened valley walls, triggering erosion and further landslides.

Heavy rain adds another threat

Forecasters are expecting storms and heavy rainfall, potentially swelling the lake further. Experts say authorities may have little choice but to allow the water to drain naturally, as difficult terrain makes transporting heavy machinery to artificially drain it extremely challenging.

Nepal has separately warned of possible blockages and further flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, urging people to stay away.

The immediate flood may have passed, but scientists warn the landscape remains dangerously unstable — with the threat of a second disaster still hanging over the valley.
