These thoughts have been on my mind for some time now. Imagine, for a second, that a human were to come into contact with another living being that possesses 10x their intelligence. What would it be like? How would they relate? Would it be equivalent to the limited level of intellectual exchange that a human has with their dog when they go to the park to toss a ball around together?

My guess is that humanity would try to destroy it, like it does everything else on this planet. Not only because of the destructive nature of humans, but because mankind would feel threatened by anything much more cognitively capable.

Seems unlikely to happen, unless you believe the aliens are coming, but fact is we could have real humanoid robots running on AGI within the next 10 years that could evolve into something exactly like this. Then what happens? Do humans develop adequate safeguards to allow us to coexist with the 2- or 4-legged machines that are 10x stronger, 10x faster, and 10x smarter? Or does a non-fictional version of Skynet wipe out all threats to its own existence?

Perhaps the machines consume all of Earth’s resources to build a superior AI robot civilization, in the process destroying the planet to the point where it is no longer inhabitable for humanity. Maybe the machine civilization eventually migrates to Mars after stripping Earth of everything useful, leaving the planet behind as a human wasteland, while moving to a place where humanoid machines can live more comfortably, since they don't require oxygen, and can benefit from the planet's reduced gravitational pull.

I wonder if that might actually be the more likely outcome than the assumed “AI takes over and destroys humanity” narrative. The machines don’t necessarily have to want to make us vanish. They could simply become so much more intelligent and capable that humanity becomes irrelevant to their future plans. They leave Earth behind, not because they hate humanity, but because they have no real use for our planet, or even the humans... anymore.

Humans will wipe each other out way before the planet or a human creation ever could.

Aliens are basically the same as any other fictional character to me. Nobody has proof so dont care

I was working on the commissioning of a very high powered HF transmission site where we had 5 HF 250kW transmitters controlled by a couple of big processors.

This was about 60 years ago.

The parent company and gear was Collins Radio Company and they had an onsite Russuan engineer named Olig Chitchoff.

He was the most brilliant, intelligent man I have ever met.

He could solve any problem, anything.

5 250kW HF transmitters spewing their energy into the air. A dragon fly or animal near the antennas was immediately zapped with this long blue flame of energy.

Once the corona started it was hard to stop it and the corona would keep burning into the atmospher and you could hear the transmission coming from the sky. Unfortunatelly this tended to burn down the aerials, so enter Olig who worked out a solution that de-keyed the transmitter to extinguish the corona.

Our receiving HF signal for rebroadcast was not the best due to fading.

Olig designed a system to combine all the signal fading in and out and broadcast a clean constant amplitude signal, brilliant.

Many other projects he designed and implemented.

His intelligence was x10 greater than everyone else.

Also on a Jave programming course in Bangkok, many years ago with young Thai programmers.

Absolutely brilliant people.

So you don't have to wait to meet intelligent people from outerspace, they are all around us.

Thank you for the replies. I think the meaning of my original post may have been misunderstood by some people, so I want to clarify what I was actually asking about.

This topic is about AI, not aliens.

The scenario I am interested in is the possibility that, within the next 10 years, humans develop humanoid robots powered by artificial general intelligence that eventually become far more intelligent and capable than humans.

I mentioned aliens only as a hypothetical comparison. If a human encountered a living being that was 10 times more intelligent than them, an obvious real world explanation would be an extraterrestrial intelligence. But I then pointed out that this seems unlikely to happen. The much more realistic possibility is that humans themselves create something that reaches this level of intelligence.

That is the actual question I am interested in: what happens when humans create machines that are vastly more intelligent, faster, stronger, and potentially more capable than we are?

Would humans be able to coexist with them? Would we be able to control or contain them? And, perhaps most importantly, what would those machines decide to do once they were capable of making their own decisions and pursuing their own objectives?

The point is not that aliens are coming, that aliens will attack Earth, or that extraterrestrials will take over the planet.

The point is that humanity may eventually create its own form of nonhuman intelligence, and that could produce outcomes that are very different from the usual fictional scenario of AI simply deciding to eventually destroy humanity.

My original post was intended to explore that possibility. Thank you.

the entire planet is full of energy...fossil fuels, wind, solar, volcanic, ocean waves, temperature changes, hydro, nuclear.....and more....humans have been buring oil/fossil fuels for centuries because it is the easiest and a few very rich people corps did not want any competion to their empires .....imagine if human goal for past century was to find and develop the best energy source via inovation and government backed research and stop relying on dead plants/animals to fuel our needs..

.jimmy carter dared to install solar panels on white house roof during arab oil embargo #1...ronald reagan had them removed his first day in office....what IF reagan had said this is one model for our future...and now in a JFK like promise he had said we will be off of fossil fuels in 20 years and then did it?

no mid east wars over oil? no sucking up to middle east dictators, no polluting the entire world with emissions, no gouging people with oil burning cars/trucks/factories by developing cleaner, cheaper, better, more sustainable sources of energy?

and yet here we are in 2026 with a POTUS who is worried because wind mills are evil, coal is clean, while he makes billions by manipulating the cost of oil with his endless wars....and half of america cheers....

Just look at the difference. As a species humanity has a lot to answer for including violence against fellow humans, and against animals. Doubtless if confronted by by a superior entity the reaction will likely be to destroy it, and move on with a free conscience.
