US Slams UK Plan to Boost BBC and ITV Online Visibility

The Trump administration has said it has “serious concerns” about a UK plan to require YouTube and other digital platforms to give greater prominence to established broadcasters, warning the approach could enable censorship of online content.

In a statement issued through the US embassy in London, Washington argued that the proposed changes to social media feeds could create a “template” that authoritarian governments might use to justify tighter control of what users see. The administration also warned the plan could weaken the position of independent journalism, describing it as a form of “extraterritorial censorship” of Americans’ protected speech.

The comments come as ministers, regulators and public service broadcasters in the UK debate how to respond to misinformation online. They have argued that as more people use less regulated platforms such as X, YouTube and TikTok, new rules may be needed to improve the visibility of credible information.

What The UK Plans

The UK government has been consulting on proposals to encourage or require platforms to prioritise content from long-established media organisations in algorithmic recommendations. Under the plan, outlets such as the BBC and ITV would receive enhanced visibility.

The UK also signalled earlier this year that it would consider legislation if platforms did not voluntarily take action to ensure trustworthy content is promoted in digital feeds.

Supporters of the approach say it would help tackle misinformation and help protect culturally British programming, as well as support public service broadcasters facing financial pressure from the shift to online media.

US Concern Over “Censorship”

Washington said the UK’s framework could effectively remove the reach of independent reporters and media outlets by pushing them down in feeds in favour of established broadcasters. It argued that such an outcome would not be meaningfully different from removal when a less favoured speaker or publication loses visibility in practice.

The administration also urged the UK to spell out safeguards to ensure that any “biases and preferences” from UK officials or third-party organisations do not shape how content is surfaced in ways that disadvantage independent or minority-viewpoint journalism.

The US embassy statement said the administration would “likely consider such a measure as facilitating censorship”, and highlighted its willingness to challenge rules affecting largely US-based technology firms that run major global platforms.

UK Government Response

A spokesperson for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said the department welcomed engagement and responses to the government’s media green paper. The spokesperson added that the government believes strongly in free expression and fair competition and said any action would aim to protect both.

Insiders cited in the wider reporting said any measures would apply only to the UK, with the US criticism framed as part of efforts to influence how major platform operators respond.

Trump’s Media Record And Wider Debate

The dispute also plays out against Donald Trump’s long-standing criticism of mainstream news organisations. The US president has frequently attacked established outlets, accusing them of “fake news” and describing coverage as biased, while using social media to reach supporters.

Trump is also still involved in a legal case involving the BBC over an edition of Panorama in which the programme was reported to have spliced together one of his speeches. The BBC apologised for the edit but said the show did not defame him.

Meanwhile, some creators and social media companies have questioned whether platforms should artificially promote traditional media. A UK YouTube creator, Simon Squibb, said he was encouraged that concerns had been raised by an organisation he believed politicians would heed and warned the UK risked moving in a “dangerous” direction. He said he was glad the US had intervened.

Believe what you like.

You made a statement with nothing to back it up other than there was/is a security bunker under the grounds of the old BBC building. Some might label you a conspiracy theorist with nothing to support what you claim. Anyway, you too can believe what you like.

I'm just telling the truth as this "plan" would be forbidden by EU law!

Having a security bunker in the grounds of a building doesn't mean the security forces own the corporation.

How else would a MSM broadcaster or country broadcast in wartime without public service secure transmition capabilities. Most countries will have such a system!

It has nothing to do with ownership of the MSM

That's what I said. @BritManToo seems to think it does. Very odd.

I can't see a problem. The BBC is a "trusted and reliable source" just like CNN. This is what we're told about the legacy media on here which, for the main part, represents the majority of sourced articles. If anyone thinks that the MSM is left biased they are obviously MAGA/"far right".

I also trust them for the bare facts, but they are mainstream, part of the neoliberal order, that has not only ruled the economy and the body politic, but also our minds and attitudes. The individual journalists might not be aware of it, but their "regimes of perception and thought" (Foucault) will frame their focus and reporting, it will determine what they report, what they leave out (or not even notice in the first place), how they represent it, always more or less in line with the predominant order.

CNN and BBC, not even MSNBC, are truly left wing. As part of the hypercapitalism, we all live in and suffer from, they are right wing and inherently reactionary.

100% True and a big % of the younger Gens are wising up to it.

Be careful writing that on here though - last time I said words to that effect I was suspended for 3 days by my number one fan / stalker

Yes. As was written years ago - it's not the questions they ask that are important. it's the questions they don't ask. Lots of literature on this - many Americans might be familiar with Noam Chomsky's book "Manufacturing Content - Manufacturing Consent"

Why?
Many stories are 100% made up and many more are bent with numerous lies to fit agendas (lower the birth rate in white countries, stop people from travelling, divide & conquer by race, sex, sexual prefs etc etc etc).

You were obvs lied to about many things - most recently Iran Nukes and most glaringly WMDs.
The MSM are LIARS - Sociery is controlled by the Wizrd Class (social engineers) and maybe most people need that.

Obviously no one can have perfect knowledge about everything, but when event are consistently NOT being disclosed with transparency or when the claims aren’t just low probability but appear to be impossible, then the entire probability field opens.

As it should.

Conspiracy theory is the natural and healthy reaction to obfuscation.

If the institutions did their job, the truth would be so obvious no one would speculate.

But when either elite power, corruption and/or incompetence festers, expect and accept conspiracy theory. Because it is the logical behaviour of the healthy mind.

It's called discernment. Some people have it. Some people don’t.

You are wrong. They are as left and as woke as can be. As for "I also trust them for the bare facts" they were pushing the "safe and effective" and covid-19 was zoonotic not a lab leak line. Did you believe this? Many on here did and any opposing views to the narrative were smacked down.

Excellent aide to recognising wizard spells (propoganda / public relations)

There is documentary on youtube about it if anyone can be bothered to find it.

Funny that (the jewish) chomski ended up on Epstiens flight logs.
Good for us that he decided to profit from exposing some of the media industrial complexes dirty tricks though

No, I agree with @thecyclist on the issue of bare facts. I think what that means is in Nepal a mudslide wipes through a border area with China. That's a fact. The Indian Ocean Tsunami was a fact. A plane crashes - it's a fact. All the other information might be massaged sometimes, but there is such a thing as bare facts.

It's 10 billion, and it will fail anyway as Trump expected the BBC to roll over, rather as he expected Iran to do the same. When the BBC challenged him and demanded proof and documents Trump's lawyers went into retreat and said that the orange man was too busy to comply. His case was always wafer-thin and will be thrown out.

Did the BBC alter the meaning/wording of a Trump statement, or not ?

The BBC have been caught out many times trying to manipulate the British public with there flagship programmes such as Panorama , and Question time. Audiances screened prior to a " live Audiance " planting members to cause trouble with panelist's who try and tell the truth shouted down, illegals planted when Reform members are on the panel, Panorama filming the Son of a hamass supporter, trying to set Tommy Robinson up which only ended when one of there top executives had to die on his sword after being caught out in a double sting by an under cover film crew. Top stars caught into kiddie porn then still being paid top salary's till they were sentanced.

They admitted their error. They also pointed out that few, if any, saw the broadcast in the USA as it was not broadcast there, and the BBC has asked Trump to justify the damage he claims was caused. Since the BBC asked for documents Trump's team have been back-pedaling.

I doubt this is the reason the govt. wants algorithms on media platforms to push the BBC.

What would you like to see? What positive things do you think should have had articles written here and didn't? Name something good he did, that would be a good place to start.

The negativity is because he is a mentally unstable buffoon who is destroying America on the world stage. Nobody has ever seen anything like it in our life times.

I wonder if there is a hidden agenda here. A sneaky way of getting people to watch BBC and ITV programmes on the internet then enforce the licence fee for watching BBC content.

It's quite clear that by far most if not all of the 'MSM' haters here have never even swept the floor of a newsroom never mind worked in one.

Maybe one or two who got sacked perhaps and still hold grudges.

And with the level of abysmal analytical capabilities and inabilities to maintain rational arguments on display, they'd never get one either.

No. The negativity is leftist narrative. Seem to hear about ICE related deaths in the MSM but never seem to hear about people murdered/raped/killed by illegal aliens. BTW I believe prescription drug costs have been massively reduced. No tax on tips and overtime. Trillions of dollars in investments. Closed the borders. Removed a dictator. Stopped the war in Gaza and got the hostages and bodies of hostages released. I could go on but it would make no difference as you are clearly a sufferer of the Hate Trump At All Cost infliction.

Indeed. It was a stupid editorial decision for whatever reason. But that's the difference. They admitted the error and corrected it. Stations like the Beeb are 'trusted' precisely because of that.

The people who hate the Beeb and other 'MSM' simply double down on their malignorant gobbings or deflect or shift the goalposts. They seldom if ever have any idea just what goes into, and how many people work on a news item, written or broadcast, before it goes public.

That is utter garbage. It gets reported. But in responsible stations and publications not dramatized.

Which is why you perhaps overlook those reports ... there are plenty of them. They even get posted here in AN, from 'MSM' sources as well.
