Villa Market - The Avenue

Got handed a receipt at Villa Market today (The Avenue, 2nd Road). On the bottom of the receipt it had a:

  • "NTax" amount
  • subtotal amount
  • VAT amount
  • grand total

I asked what this "NTax" was, knowbody could tell me... even though this amount worked out to be around 28% on top of the 7% VAT.

I called Villa Market head office and everyone drew a blank there also!

Is this a computer error or has someone got a reasonable explanation for this? Is this happening to every customer?

The "NTax" is short for "Non VAT". It's just a case of poor "translation" by the market. It's actually the amount of your total purchases that is NOT subject to the VAT. No problem there. You were not charged that amount. Look at your Sub Total. That's the total amount of your purchases BEFORE tax. Add the VAT, and you should have the total you paid.

In the "real world", they'd list your totals as: Sub Total; Amount subject to tax (VAT), VAT, Total. There's really no need for the "Amount not subject to VAT" that they show as "NTax". But, TIT!

Tax. Schmax.

I stopped caring when they stopped carrying Grape Nuts cereal.

When they opened here, they made a big deal about how they were going to be responsive to consumer requests.

Well, we requested, and they did stock it for the first few months. Even then, it was hard to always find, as people were obviously hoarding it. I wish I had because it has now been months since I have seen it in stock.

I know they are a sponsor here, but I just don't get it, why they can't stock this obviously popular item?

Maybe one of their brilliant buyers thinks it is a grape or a nut and not a cereal?

Jingthing,

I know that this deprevation of cereal is really bad. But once you get over it, can you ponder the possibility to come on a walk around the lake, to pick up trash?

Is that some kind of come on to take me on a cement swim to feed the fishies?

C'mom Jing, you still care.

Or... just possibly Villa have actually surpassed their competition and realized like them that nobody in sufficient quantities eats this stuff to make any money from purchasing premium priced imported stuff that sits on the shelf or otherwise unopened (and undigested) in the obvious hoarders larders (and colons).

I mean, quite honestly, it has the taste and texture of "Trill" (or the end results of them what eats "Trill").

No, I am sure it was selling really well when they did stock it. I saw with my own eyes how when they did stock it, they couldn't keep it on the shelves. I am convinced there is a story behind the story here.

Have you seen some of the weird cereals they carry there? Grape Nuts is not an obscure brand at all.

And yes I care enough to avoid shopping there unless they have carry something that absolutely no other store carries. If I am in the area, I stop in, look at the cereals, note the shameful lack of Grape Nuts and now even an empty space for Grape Nuts, and walk out in disgust. Check back here, they had promised to carry it. Liars.

I don't know what trill is as I am not Bulgarian, but if it is anything like Grape Nuts cereal, count me in.

It pays to keep a close eye on what you're being charged for an item at checkout. Most shelf items aren't marked, so it's easy to be overcharged.

It happened quite a few times with me that the shelf price was different to what the scanner charged. One time the scanner stung me 168 for an item that should have cost 54.

I had this discussion with the checkout staff one day. I went and got the shelf label from in front of the product I was going to purchase. It was the wrong shelf label for the product, so I said not want.

On the other hand this week I bought some wine, as I have experience with their system I do check the price as it comes up on the the till, the wine was less than the label on the display, I smiled and said very little. :o

It is beyond me why anyone would shop at this store, save for the occassional item that you can't find elsewhere. Their prices are ridiculous for identical items you can find at Friendship. The only time I go there now is to pick up a jar of Pataks curry paste on my way to Friendship to do my proper shopping.

I guess location and convenience are a factor for some, but last time I was there to get my curry I had a wander around and was chuckling to myself the whole time looking at their prices. The staff must think I am a bit nuts, especially when I always go to the checkout with only 1 item.

Good for you.

But if everyone follows your example, there will be no customers at Villa, then none of these hard-to-find items that they DO sell. So it's rock-and-hard-place time again.

Or maybe it's time to retire and open a little shop somewhere that just sells these impossible items, at very high prices.

  • 3 weeks later...

I confess to liking things that are expensive in ALL of Asia - Korea, Japan,(not sure about China)

Thailand - if you can get cheese at all it will be expensive(no crappy processed stuff I mean)

Villa Market has better selection than friendship here...

But both are expensive...

High quality German n brown and pompernickel bread..Friendship is a little

better than Villa but hardly worth the extra time for me (currently staying in Apex)

Yougurt....some good local stuff that is only 20 baht in Vila..less selection in Friendship.

Also a great selection of foreign yogurt in Villa..

I was so excited when the Villa opened here - but now that the novelty has worn off, I find myself only using it for two things; bagels and frozen burritos (astonishingly cheap for a frozen good - B45).

Anything else that I enjoy, I can get elsewhere for less. I, too have become dismayed at their apparent lack of results importing requests for me (things I would buy by the case if they were able to get it).
