I saw live video of the ship being towed in to Thailand. To say it looks rough would be an understatement. Rust from top to bottom. I was also surprised the planes were still onboard, they usually fly them off elsewhere. I guess since it's such a short stay they're just keeping the planes on the upper deck. I also didn't see any helicopters buzzing around as they usually do. I hope they're headed for an overhaul.

I lived on the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) for four years, and sailed to multiple ports in the Western Pacific, so yeah. dotard, that makes me a bit of an expert.

I was also surprised by that. I am definitely not an expert but thought the ship looked very rough indeed.

We don't know what condition it was in before the current deployment.

Real Navy not Royal Navy we used to pay deck hands for voluntary overtime to paint the ship. We had to be alongside to do that.

I did extended WESTPAC deployments and we never came back with ships looking like that. Something has seriously changed in the 35+ years since I was in the USN.

Today you don't have deck apes chipping and painting all day. They rely on yard periods.

We do continuous maintenance at sea too. Everything above the waterline is normally maintained while the vessel is operating. Dry dock is mainly needed for major work and inspection. So there is no reason for the vessel to look like a typical Russian dump at sea.

Chipping and painting of decks in the hot sun, at sea, and with sea waves crashing, and the deck pitching, is enjoyable work.

The experts are right, it's a disgrace the ship is not shiny and glittery like a Barbie Doll, I mean it's a war, they could at least make it look pretty.

Exterior painting or hanging over the side on staging scaffolds is generally restricted or limited to calm weather and specific operational conditions. They were at war (or at skirmish if you follow the obfuscations). They most likely weren't allowed to remove the running rust in case they needed to act quickly.
