Thai athletes win more medals at Athens Paralympics

BANGKOK, Sept 28 (TNA) - The Thai athletic team has won two more medals for the nation--one gold and one bronze--at the ongoing Athens Paralympics.

The Thai disabled athletes yesterday grabbed one more gold medal from the men's 4x100 m wheelchair racing, and one more bronze medal from the men's 1x200 m wheelchair racing.

The latest medals have make Thailand win three gold medals, six silver medals and six bronze medals at the ongoing 12th Paralympic Games so far, which began on 17 September and will end tomorrow.

Over 40 Thai disabled athletes are taking part.

Great for Thailand . I always had the feeling that disabled or mentally challenged people(pc) had a raw deal in the kingdom in general. Hopefully these acheivements will help cure the discrimination and maybe get a few more wheelchair ramps ect.

I can tell you, from experience, Thais really are there to help you in any way, any time, any where. Absolutely wonderful.

But, out of sight, out of mind. That is the reality, too. Rarely is any thought given to wheelchair access, for example. Only 'trickle-down' money gets to programs to provide education, training, support to the less-abled among the population. Foreigners are clearly the biggest source of real support for less-enabled..less- empowered, actually.

The olympics coverage is good, and I hope it helps to get more Thais involved as volunteers in support of all the needy people in Thailand...Sadly, very few Thais volunteer their time for such activities...

BANGKOK, Oct 4 (TNA) - The government today organized a luncheon party in honour of Thai Paralympic medalists, and presented them cash rewards, worth Bt23.8 million totally.

The event was organized at the Government House here, in which the Paralympic medalists and other members of the Thai athletic team taking part in the 12th Paralympic Games recently held in Greece's capital city of Athens, were honourably greeted and received.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra presided over the gracious event, and presented the cash rewards to the winning disabled athletes.

Gold medalists each received Bt one million, while silver and bronze medalists were each granted Bt 600,000 and Bt400,000 respectively.

The Thai disabled athletes totally won 15 medals for the nation at the Athens Paralympics, scheduled for 17-28 September--three gold, six silver and six bronze medals, being ranked on the 35th place.

Thailand sent 43 disabled athletes to take part in the Athens Paralympics.

The government also granted a financial support to the Sports Association for the Disabled of Thailand Under the Patronage of His Majesty the King to be used for training of Thai disabled athletes.

The Paralympic medalists were also honourably granted 'diplomatic passports' from the government, designating them as the country's goodwill ambassadors for sports, like their counterparts of the Athens Olympics.

In his speech to welcome and honour the Thai disabled athletic team, the prime minister praised their perseverance and strong mind, and their wonderful success in the Athens Paralympics, which, he said, not only has brought fame to themselves and their families, but also has boosted Thailand's reputation in the international community.

The premier also urged abled fellows to take the disabled athletes as their good example in seeking for the 'positive side' of their life.

The Thai leader also pledged that the government would provide vocational opportunities for the disabled athletes so that they could earn their own living in the long run.

The prime minister then hosted a luncheon in honour of the Paralympic medalists and other members of the Thai athletic team, who returned from the Athens Paralympics via a flight of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI), the national flag carrier, on 1 October.
