Hey ya, boys and girls. I know that this has come up before, but I couldn't find the last post concerning Dentists on Samui. Any of you have a regular Dentist on the island?

I remeber someone mentioning a Dentist in Nathon, but they just had something like, head for the bank of Siam and you'll see the office.

Thanks in advance. Nothing special just basic cleaning.

basic scaling and polishing is a strightforward treatment that any dentist should be able to carry out satisfactorily for you.

you need to be sure that instrument sterilisation is done properly and by looking at the general cleanliness and tidiness of the office you may get an idea or feeling as to how thorough they are with their sterilisation procedures.

there is a dentist in the hospital in chaweng , the one right in chaweng ,(samui international???? ) and she gets lots of praise from those who have been treated by her.

Hi seville,

There's plenty of dentists around now, in Chaweng and Nathon.

The one I use in Nathon is Dr. Jimmy. Been using him over the years to full satisfaction and all people I send there where happy as well.

He has an office in Nathon during the daytime and an office in Chaweng during evening hours.

Call him on 077 421 219 Nathon from 7:30 - 16:30 and 077 230 421 in Chaweng from 17:30 - 20:00.

Good luck.

Upon entering Nathon coming from Maenam direction, it's on the right hand side, shortly after Nathon gems. It does have a sign on the window and the obligatory wall sign.

I, myself, am not the biggest fan of Dr Jimmy. He made a crown for me that promptly fell out. Another dentist (Dr Lek, sadly, moved on) put it in and in it has stayed for the past 10 years or so. Also, my brother-in-law went to Dr Jimmy who charged him something like 350 baht to have a tooth pulled. When he went back a year later (wearing a large gold necklace, foolish man) Dr Jimmy charged him double.

I had root canal treatment at Bangkok Samui Hospital, expensive but good service. However, they told me I needed a crown which costs about 20,000 baht. I went for a second opinion to Dentist Khun Apichart - his cliinic is half way between Tesco and Dive Supply on main ring road. His advise, which he gave free, was that no crown was needed in my case.

This seemed very honest advise since he could have made a lot of money out of my situation. I have a friend who recommended this dentist, had root canal treatment and was very happy with his service.

root canal treatment involves widening the root canal and a lot of tooth has to be drilled away in order to gain adequate access to the root canal.

after the root canal treatment is finished the tooth has to be restored to functionality.

in most cases there is not enough tooth left to retain a filling satisfactorily , and the tooth structure that is left is not strong enough to withstand the enormous forces generated in chewing. there is a good chance that the tooth will at some time fracture vertically , necessitating extraction and thereby wasting all the time, effort and expense of the root canal treatment.

a well designed and fitted crown will go a long way to ensuring that a root treated tooth remains in one piece.

in cases where the root canal treatment has not involved a lot of tooth structure removal, restoration of function by a simple filling may suffice.

The dentist in Samui International Hospital is the same as in Bangkok Samui Hospital.

Interesting to see if the prices differ.

There is also a dentist in private practice in the strip mall by the clock tower in North Chaweng. She used to be at Samui Internatinal Hospital but her client calling became so high that she went into private practice. I have not used her personally but she has a full service dentistry practice including all types of crowns implants and of course cleaning. Mostly a Western Clientel.

Say Aaaah :o

Hi BBY,

That's correct. I went to see her and made an appointment for a crown and agreed upon a price with her staff. The price was listed and open to see.

I' had checked various other dentists and she had the best price around.

Upon arriving for the dental work, she upped the price. I basically thanked her for her time and walked straight out to never return.

Went back to Dr. Jimmy's and had the crown done by him for his original quoted price.

Friend of mine recently went to have his teeth cleaned at Dr Jimmy's He got a nasty infection in his gum and spent days in pain with frequent trips to the doctor. May be a bargain, but at what costs?

Dear Naomisri,

I'm sure that everything has good and bad stories about all dentists or even physicians on Samui.

My personal experiences with Dr. Jimmy have aways been good. The one time I went to a different dentist I walked away, although I heard good things about that dentist. Just didn't work for me.

Maybe pointless to be giving/asking for recommendations then?! All down to personal experience.

Went to BKK Samui hospital today, seem quite expensive, but the initial feeling I got from seeing a price list and taking quite extensively with the lady on the front desk I would certainly consider seeing a dentist there. They were quite willing to discuss potential costs with me like whether anasthetic was included if you have a filling (it was) or the extra costs you might have to pay if you have a difficult extraction. They didn't have a family plan though which was what I was looking for so the three of us could rack up quite a bill if we needed much work.

Dr. Jimmy. he just saved me 100,000 bhat

if the work dr. jimmy :o did for you is still there in 12 years time and has not given you any problems and radiographs have not detected any pathology on or around the root of the tooth then you can claim to have saved 100,000b.

until then....... well you cant be sure can you. :D

Hi Naomisri,

Not really pointless in asking for recommendations if you don't know a good dentist, tailor, physisian or you name it.

Answers will vary tho, due to personal experience and that makes it interesting. What is great to one person can be utter bol**cks for another person.

The dentist that works at BKK Samui is apparently the same that currently works at Samui International.

I like the look and new equipment of BKK Samui a lot BTW.

As pain urged me to rush before I could read this topic, I thought not taking any risks by going to luxurious BKK Samui Hospital, as my dental experiences of 8 years ago in the BKK Hospital are still satisfying.

Here too, it seems (just done). 7500 B for a tooth unrootment, in 3 times, but new products and new equipment. Dentist's Dr. Supang Samansukumal, young but looks experienced (works in Nathon in the mornings, surely you'd pay less over there but according to her not same products or equipment). Pain is gone so back to smiling!

Could not agree more - she's excellent. I like the whole place - I gave blood there after the tsunami, and they did a B12 shot for me the other week. Good place.

I used to visit Dr Supaporn (at the clock tower in Chaweng). Very pleased with the treatment.

Now i wanted to make an appointment and they said she had gone to Bangkok and would not be coming back. Anyone knows where she is?

Good for you. I went to Dr. Jimmy last year, had to make about 5 or 6 fillings (yes I know, spare your comments about brushing :o ). Lost one after 2 weeks, lost another one recently. Maybe just bad luck, but still I don't really feel like going there again. Any recent recommendations for another reliable dentist in Nathon?

thumbs UP for Dr. Jimmy!

had a root channel treatment incl. new jacket crown - tops!

Dr.Jimmy in Nathon is to be found just opposite the "old" Samui Mart, next to the Siam City Bank, look out for a whit and purple sign with a large tooth on it, he is just next to Clinic Dr.Somsak!

There is a clinic right before the Soi Tesco Lotus - comin' from Bhoput!
