  1. I was watching coverage of the demonstrations on the local Hong Kong television channels whilst in Macau , live news feeds

showing pepper spray , brutal arrests , shot guns loaded with tear gas , hand thrown tear gas , loaded automatic rifles ,charging baton wielding troops and school children standing up to this treatment . Meanwhile on CCTV , nothing ,not even a mention of these events. They had programmes plugging Shanghai's new economic zone . In my opinion the forces behind the over reaction of the police and armed soldiers on Sunday night are cowards as they cannot acknowledge their own actions.

Remember news agencies have a need to create a certain climate ...at the initial charge of things , human emotions take over and I don't believe the HK police meant to be brutal or anything ...it's the human emotions of trying to protect a state of mind

After the calm , I do believe there are lots of scenes of police helping the students , cleaning the pepper sprays from eyes etc and now they have retreated a distance to give them space

The question just as we have seen in Thailand is whether it will stay peaceful enough or will a long term occupation means a disruption of the normal way of life

I cannot believe any government in the world would allow the financial district to be blocked up for an extended period of time and I hope the resulting negotiations will mean a peaceful passé in time for both sides

I agree with your point on news agencies being used to manipulate opinion but for the PRC media to claim the protests were in fact Hong Kong people celebrating the anniversary of the creation of the communist state is laughable .

The police no doubt regretted their actions and as of yesterday were few on the ground . The peaceful demonstration is now playing out and we shall see how long the students can carry on . Another note of interest here in HK was the spontaneous other demonstrations happening peacefully in Mong Kok and Causeway Bay where the police presence was almost non existent. They were caught out or flat footed if you will allow me the pun.

I was on the eurorail chatting up the chicks and getting nowhere in between cheap beer fests....great times!

last time i saw you smokie...you were still at it!tongue.png

I hitch hiked from old west berlin to glasgow when i was 17 , got a free ride on the chanel ferry back then , pot was every where . I also don't remember being an idiot but that could have been all the pot .

  4. this is my cheap tipple, up country, when i get fed up with Leo and lime

Sang Som from the corner shop

    limes from the garden

    honey from the whisky bottle

    mint from the garden

soda water from the corner shop

    ice from the fridge

put the sang som , some slices of lime , a dollop of honey and ice in a jar or cocktail shaker and shake it up, then pour the filtered mixture over a glass of new ice, top up with soda water and pop in a leaf or two of mint so as it looks classy , fire water really .

  5. I visited HK with my children March 2014

I found the hotels in HK use U.K. 13A 3-pin plugs, so I couldn't charge my laptop or mobiles.

You won't find an adapter from TL 3-pin or 2-pin in HK, so buy before you go.

I found all (with one exception) HK'ese unfriendly at best, unhelpful at worst.

I booked my family Disney tickets at the airport mall Disney shop, and they turned out to all have different dates.

It took about an hour at Disneyland customer services to sort that out, after the entry machines barred me.

Disneyland was very poor, no circular train, no Disney characters on the streets, half the rides were 'under repair', and there were frequent queue delays due to power cuts.

I've been to Disney Orlando and it knocks the socks out of HK.

If you're travelling by train, make sure you have lots of change and small notes for the ticket machines.

Bus drivers take exact money or they keep the change.

    Have a good time, I didn't.

I agree with this post about disney and I would advise you to skip disney land altogether . Ocean Park has plenty to offer . There are many fun days out to be had , I will list a few .

A boat trip from Aberdeen promenade to PoToi Island for a sea food dinner .

A boat trip from Aberdeen promenade to Lamma Island , So Kwu Wan Pier with a 1 1/2 hour treck over the hill to Yung Shue Wan Pier where you can have dinner .

A visit to the Big Buddah on Lantau Island , either by cable car at Tung Chung or bus from Mui Wo . You can continue along the road by bus to Tai O old fishing village for a meal .

A visit to Tsim Sha Tsui with rides across the harbour to see the lights , there are a few harbour cruises to choose from , my son loved the Chinese sailng junk .

An late sunday afternoon trip to Kowloon city for Thai or Issan food with many regions and styles for your choice .

A visit to the Maritime Museum on the Hong Kong Outlying Islands ferry pier .

There are loads of beaches .

There are night markets in Mong Kok and Jordan .

The Novotel in North Point is central .

    Have a nice trip.

  6. The GP is a busy time of year in Macau .

You can fly to Macau on Airmacau or less expensively with airasia .

There are many hotel casino deals available . I would add that although the place is very small the public transport is pish.

There are a few bikers in town and the Bar Irlandes is a bit of riot during the races .
