some answers to your questions and simple tips, none having much logic but it's how I avoid accidents here
1. Avoid the on coming vehicle by pulling to the left and letting him go by, this will happen about every 3 minutes so no need honking or flashing lights. He'll flash his lets to get your attention and tell you to move out of the way or play crash up. Always you will have a scooter on you left in the blind sport so expect this any time making any left turns or maneuvers. (The closer you are to Nathon the more "ferry run" vehicles you will get doing this and the faster they will be going)
2. Stop behind it or pass on the left is normal flow of things here, sometimes both sides. I usually stop and wait because the reason may not be clear why the drivers stopped or what the mess ahead or reason is if he is not indicating. All the while monitoring my rear view mirror for people planning to crash into me.
Can you list the countries you have experience driving in, this is common mistake here comparing it to Europe or north america driving. One of the attractions for most foreigners living here is the relaxed attitude on rules and regulations that they deal with back home, well this goes the same for driving which has more of a negative effect.
Forget what you know about driving rules, consider it to be more like american football.. Just do what ever you can to try and not get hit. .
3. Call your agent yes and if you don't speak Thai call a friend that does. You will be at fault usually and if your in opposite lane when accident happens
your pretty much guilty no matter the circumstance. No need to sit quietly in your car but you will have to wait for police if you want to go that route, then you
will have the next few hours of your day or night mucked up waiting on the road or in the police station. This is pretty normal for any country though once police are involved.
Do not be aggressive on confrontational, the driving here is wild but Thais do not show road rage or aggregation as most foreigners so if simple accident it is not to difficult to keep the peace and resolve it.
Seriousness of the accident can obviously have an effect on situation, I am only generalizing for simple fender bender.
Some other random tips that may or may not help or make sense... lol
-It is your job to not crash into people constantly trying to crash into you.
-You will have to save the life of every scooter driver turning left from side road onto main road because they won't be looking.
-Always look for a scooter beside you on your left before making any left turns
-Do not slam on your brakes 100% unless no other options for you. You will have someone and their scooter embedded on your bumper.
Everyone talks about the "Samui Tattoo's" here (ie road rash) well do not be the Tattoo Artist ( the pick up truck with smashed in tailgate on one side)
-If you drive with your lights on the police will tell you to turn them off in the day.
-Slow down when going buy Tesco and Big C.
-Drive the speed limit, don't worry about the Aholes behind you trying to get around. Many are foreign anyways so we are just as guilty as locals for bad driving here.
-Although hard to do, avoid driving at night. It is hard for some to get used of so many lights coming at them from all directions and can be
disorienting. Also may be good chance of multiple drivers with alcohol in their systems.
-Dont over take, it's an island so no need to rush.
The driving here is what it is, not going to change likely.
I have never had and accident on the island and I do love living here, wish everyone else would just slow down and enjoy it also.

Does this website not work with an i pad ?just a blank picture!
Since Apple elected to not allow Adobe Flash on iPad (at least ios 6, not sure about 5), I would guess that's the issue.
That cracked me up. to clever!

There was add somewhere and website awhile back selling Rhodesian Ridgeback's on the island because I remember trying to talk my wife into buying one but place we are at does not allow pets.

It is ridiculous for anyone to try and justify this. It is ridiculous to blame the victim what ever the circumstance.
Crime rate stats by country are easy to find on the internet. Why do we have to go through this debate every time about what place has more or less crime here/there/anywhere?? How do we get to country bashing from discussion about a women being assaulted?
There is crime on this planet, simple fact. Common variables affecting crime usually population density, economy, stability.. but what ever the
reason it does not make it right. Common or not common rape or attempted rape is still not acceptable.
Even if the man miss judged the situation, what happened to No means No?
I truly wish Mankind were not so evil that if a women enjoying herself even if over indulged gets rape/attempted rape instead of assistance.
It is still ok to be a good person. even on the internet!!

An education or a Hangover, is hit or miss which one I experience more when traveling. Maybe leaning more towards hangover!
-
That is easy. it is 594167.4619 Ugandan Shilling!
They do that just as an approximate amount so they are not committed in case of slight mistake due to price change.
(i think)

Each time I ask something in this forum it goes in a troll... I am used to it. No problem.
I admit sometimes I ask weird questions (not this time), as I am cheap and curious...
But even when I'm serious it goes in a troll so I am not offended anymore!
Yes, I'm here since a few times, most of the things are cheaps for us, farangs, but I think tea is expensive. So I ask if I can get cheaper, is it big deal?
Please note that I don't feed the troll, so I won't answer anymore if this goes, again in a debate... (we'll speak at the TV party!!)
Thanks others for your answer, much appreciated !
The mrs's and I tend to disagree when it comes to tea. I am always getting her the best tea I can find but she only enjoys a very cheap no name type
tea. I would say must be a cheap generic brand "loose" tea sold in the markets.

Moderators. Please do your job. Is there really room for mundane topics like this?
get a life you miserable so and so !!!!!!!!!!
He has a point in a way. What next ? Where is the nearest 7/11 ?
The guy has moved to a new country to live and he is having trouble finding T bags
I was here one day and spent it exploring the islands shops. It is part of the fun of moving somewhere. Yes forums are great for those hard to locate parts for your lawnmower or motorcycle, I have just posted looking to get a Jack Russell dog but everyday items which are everywhere ?
Sorry if this means you think that I'm miserable. I'm not, I'm just honest !
What's next should not be where is the nearest 7/11 but what is the largest distance between two 7/11's.
That way we can drink tea and have a pool predicting how long it will take build a new 7/11 in that spot....
Oh no, am I really this bored
Anyways, I would be interested to know what the best tea available on the island is. Can really see myself tracking down the cheapest.

What happened to the Russian tea shop across street from Tesco?
I was going to ask if anyone had tried that place?

isn't there a whole website dedicated to Bangkok scams? I think by that name.

Goodbye Rain, Welcome to the form. It can be quite entertaining some days.
I hope your transition to Samui is good and you find as much enjoyment on the island as most of us here do.
Stay positive and don't buy into the negativity. If it was such a dangerous island there wouldn't be so many families here or
the large and very diverse amount of foreigners.

I knew one of us would mention that we'd need a work permit to do this job! ha, busted by ourselves!
-
Great ! When do I start ?
Are there any perks as no pay I presume ?
I don't even mind getting some hands on time
Having to ask these questions Bert means you don't have much chance of getting the job. You should have assumed you know the answers already.
Mind you, I'm surprised a spell checker is an advantage, there is a slim chance we shall be able to understand the winners posts.
To funny!

a Chili's would be nice to! maybe in the new airport?? lol

Came across TSA website today. Is pretty shocking how many people in USA are getting caught trying to take weapons on the plane's, Intentional or not.
Just google TSA Blog for some interesting reading. Not thai related but puts in perspective how common it is.

This thread is making me thirsty!

where can i buy this local made cider?
I was going to ask the same question. Also anyone tried any other good local ciders?
-
oh no, nothing worse than politics. Do you not have CNN, they will for sure broadcast nothing else until November. Can we high jack this thread to F1

To answer your question. no it is not traditional to have curry after massage here, the standard is some type of tea. Traditional Thai massage is done with
your clothes on as another poster pointed out.
How was the curry anyways?

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but was driving back from maenam and stopped at the art cafe at samui town centre just after the bo phut traffic lights.
It's a interesting place which caters for vegetarians, vegans and thankfully the common carnivore the food is mainly Thai but unlike most Thai food on the island is quite unique and msg free. I had the gang gurri Kung and my wife had Laab Gai and both were very tasty.
Service was prompt and friendly and the price was very reasonable for the quality of the food served would recommend to anyone who is looking for well presented healthy, tasty Thai food.
P. S. If all that veg is too much and you need to indulge. The cheese cake was also delicious.
My wife rarely lets me pass by the Art Cafe with stopping to pick up a piece of chocolate cake for her. Have had lunch there also with no complaints.

I do not think the points mentioned by the OP would have any effect on improving Thailand.
It would be a huge help to me and I am not at all against that!! But it would not make any difference to Thailand, the only post that would truly
benefit was about education.
I traveled and worked in many places like most on here have, I've seen rich countries do badly and poor countries do well.
best way to improve a country start from a few very basic things.
- Taxes have to be paid, Profit from Resources properly handled
With the money above 3 things need to be properly managed.
- Schools, education
- Hospitals
- Roads, transportation infrastructure
Being honest the things that would benefit this nation would have negative impact most of us living here.
Anyways I like it here and if was my country to run my first order of business would be to reduce the import tax on beer!

This is a great story, is very nice to see the remarkable side of one's character shine through like this. I am interested if there are police in any other countries that come close to the number of delivers this officer has done.
I always intended to find out the name of doctor or nurse that delivered me, maybe the most important part of one's life and
the person's responsible for making it all go well are seldom given any thanks when they should be praised.

The tourists will come back now that they can see it's not so cloudy all the time lol!
A Posative Taxi Story For Samui
in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Posted
Ment to post this earlier, The same had happened to me with an iphone.
After an innocent night of alcohol testing in Lamai I returned via taxi to Bohput / Big C area at about 5 am.
A couple hours latter as I was still up and I noticed the taxi driver pull into the driveway.
Being in the state I was it took me a moment to realize the driver was trying to return my iphone, not asking me to answer his phone. lol!
He had driven back from Lamai to return it I found out later.
Still lots of good people out there.
I should have just given him the phone because shortly after that it escaped from me on a night out in
Bangkok anyways. tricky iphones!
