  1. Yes and they should continue to fix the chaweng road between tesco and beach road... that one is in much worse condition... Anyway this road was famous about the flooding and dirt come to road after rain, now we dont have that but we have a new problem. The drainage pipes doesnt connect at bandon to the opposite side of drainage so now after every rain whole bunch of sandbanks appears and flooded the whole road, causing havoc...

Anyway, happy to see the improvements, hopefully they dont stop their good habit ;)

Yes the Bandon intersection can be a nightmare of late, after the rains. The other soi you mentioned really tests out your suspension, so lets hope its on the to do list in the very near future.

Yes can get entertaining going through there, Will have to put the off road tires back on!

    Cheers though to improvements.

  2. Tong from Monster Tattoo in Bohput is good, he has another shop now in Lamai, bottom end if you were coming in from Chaweng before the cross junction. Best to just go into the studios & ask to see their photos and make a decision from there.

I have looked at photo's of some of Tong's work and also Mr Khon in Lamai, both looked pretty good.

If you have the oppurtunity or are returning through Bangkok I would check out Jimmy Wong or Mr Tung, both really top shelf artist's.

Sak Yant temple tattoos are also a very cool thing about thailand and could be worth a look for you.

  3. When I lived in India, many years ago and got to know the locals, I was reliably informed that parents would main and disfigure their children to get more money begging. How terrible and sad. But the poverty in Thailand is much less severe than India so I doubt they do the same here. I hope!

I was going to say the same. Take a drive through New Delhi, the children you see there begging and young women with infants is truly tragic.

  4. While thinking slightly more about this there is a compressed gas that is cheap and could be used. Starting fluid. Starting fluid is a mixture of volatile hydrocarbons (heptane, butane or propane), diethyl ether, and carbon dioxide(as a propellant). It is often useful when starting direct injected diesel engines. It contains ether...

yes ether would posibly work, Ammonia liquid also will knock you down. We used ether in the past where I worked during winter.

Problem with either is you would need a very large amount and the smell left behind would be enough to cause you to move out of your house.

  5. Funny pick up line I heard years ago.

"excuse me miss, does this smell like chloroform to you" :cheesy:

Had our house broken into in before to, heard lots of the same stories but being realistic it's just not possible.

These sleeping agents are not easily accuired, most are very controlled substances. Most are so potent

that criminals not willing to comit murder are not inclinded to use them and then there is high cost of these fancy knock out agents.

Also if you where drugged this way you wouldn't just sleep a couple extra hrs and wake up, you would awake feeling like someone smashed you

in the head with a hammer.

Simple truth is the thieves are professional and very good at sneaking into places with out being heard, they have lots of time to watch your routines and

find your weak points and their oppurtunities. Most likely they only come with a screw diver and a scooter, watch and wait.

People being drugged and robbed using rohypnol is alot more comon and definatly not a myth. in other areas this is a drug that is easily obtained and can be addministered anywhere into anything.

  6. LLK why don't you call Nu coastal they will give you the answers to there response plan which they have, also they have drilled off Songkhla a few years ago and the platform there is producing. So why do you assume they will have a problem. IF i were you I'd be more concerned about the 2,000,000 barrels of heavy crude being moved by tankers from offshore to Mathaput or Sriracha each month.

John 1, perhaps as bit more reading on the subject prior to comment would benefit the discussion.. The public hearing was exactly about asking NuCoastal and other involved oil companies to provide their response plan should environmental damage occur. They failed to priovide it so far.

You wrote earlier in this thread that the oil companies meet all international safety standards. Can we have a proof of it?

    LLK,

you are saying companies involved failed to provide response plan, to who?

To you? Or to the government that sold these bloc's and licences to them give permission to drill and is responsible for setting the standards to be follow'd. You actually think that is not a part of the process?

There are lots of place's in the world you can and cannot drill. There are lots of good companies and lots of bad, as in all industries. Making oil and gas come out the ground to fuel YOUR needs is not the safest or easyest thing in the world to do. Being realistic accidents can and will happen.

If the thai gov did not want drilling in the gulf then there would be none, simple as that.

I am currently working as a sub contractor for Chevron in the world's 6th largest oil field. Now I have no knowledge of how the other companies involved operate but for you to insinuate that a company like Chevron can't provide a spill response plan or meet international safety standards is ridiculous. I don't know your background but I could bet that the safety standards and culture here is far beyond anything you could imagine.

A company that cannot provide a response plan but is involved and affiliated with organization such as Oil Spill Response and The Global Response Network and

are involved in a $1 billion dollar "plan to build and deploy a rapid response system that will be available to capture and contain oil in the event of a potential future underwater well blowout in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico announced in cooperation with ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell. this company canot provide response plan when they have contingency plans in place for anything you could imagine? When is the last time you spent a billion dollars on the enviroment?

I can see that the enviroment is important to you and I agree and would never argue that. Most people only see oil company's through the bad things that happen and have no knowledge of their comitment to the enviroment. (lots but not all companies) There are also lots of places on the planet that because of posible incident drilling is not feasible, don't think that all these things are not considered prior to drilling by companies.

I think when you tell John 1 to do a bit more reading prior to coment is being quick to judge. Does your knowledge of this and your enviromental comitment go any futher than google?

  7. Dear Governor,

Would you care to explain why one would NEVER receive a permit to drill off The Great Barrier Reef. Enquiring minds wonder.

:) To the Enquiring minds. The Great Barrier Reef is protected by Marine Parks and World Heritage Declarations, each has its own watchdogs and its own scientists and in 1967 it was declared a World Heritage Site. In 1979 both State and Federal Parliaments declared prohibition against mining and was set into law. In 2002 all mining leases in the area were relinquished.

i wish such watchdogs were for Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao. Before it is too late.

it already is to late. If such watch dogs were in place, we would all be visitors instead of residents. ;)

  8. What Bangkok needs, is to get all the cops sitting in booths beside traffic lights to stop manually controlling the lights. Makes things worse.

Tried that once. THey installed some huge computerized traffic control system imported from Belgium, I think it was. After the first day, the cops took it offline saying it was obvious it didn't work, thereby putting cops back sitting in the control booths.

This would be one of biggest problems then, would be next to imposible to control flow thoughout city if there is not efficent comunication between areas.

  9. Try buying a true move sim from 7 11, calls to most places from 1bt / min prefix 00600. works well

They often give these true move sims away at the airports. Like you said, they work well and is what I use. I have got many of them given to me going into samui but have never looked for them in Bangkok.

  10. Hi Gulfsailor

I think that you will need to consider fuelling facilities if you are intending to attract non-sailing types.

Also a crane/winch for minor maintenance.

Getting a boat in/out of the water in Bang Po at certain times of the year may be a problem due to wave height.

It's a good idea but would exclude me due to the size restriction and the lack of a safe mooring area. I use Petcharat

at Bang Rak although they are a little pricey.

    Gator

Gator, do you know other services Petcharat can provied, like boat storage or maintance?

Yes they provide boat storage on their land opposite. They have a 4WD tractor that makes hauling your trailer out simpler.

Thanks for the info Crusty.
