  1. We just had our house in Kalasin finished in the beginning of 2010. We used a local builder. Though local, he builds in all of North-East and North. He took care of everything.

The result was as expected: Overall ok, but a few small details were not ok, and we were not able get him to make them ok. But that was as expected, and really it was not expensive to get another to fix them.

My advice would be to look around in your area to find some new houses, that seem to match your wishes. Then knock at the door and ask for the builder. When you talk to the builder, then make him show you some of his houses to see if the match your quality demands. This is much more efficient than loads of contract papers. Break payment into 4 to 6 parts. Be prepared to pay for the last finishes yourself.

    Good luck! :)

  2. Many Farang only know Pattaya thu Walking Street, Beach Road at night, Soi 5-6 and Gogo, and these girls are very sweet speaking...red warning!

Never get emotionally involved with prostitutes. All have a sad story, and man you can have a lot of empathie for them, but they have crossed the line between good and evil and will never come back.

Good luck with your marriage. Thai women are sweet and loving, not like most arrogant Western girls. They are also very crazy at time which make the life more fun.

Can you provide a link that proves "ALL" have a sad story, and as for that crap,

"They have crossed the line between good and evil and will never come back"

<deleted> I nearly spit my coffee all over my PC when I read that crap, get a life <deleted>, try talking to some bar girls/prostitutes and ask them why they do it, you might get a suprise when you get the answers...Maybe your a troll or a missionary..

nikkoid66 seems to me to be on the evil side of the line. Me - I am on the good side, and I can see a lot of bargirls on this side. :whistling:

  3. You said your kid is 4 years old and can't read or write Thai....

There aren't many Thai kids that can at that age either, So wouldn't worry too much ..

Han skriver at 4 års skolegang i Australien - ikke at alderen er 4 år.

  4. The OP mentions 'Tha tom' which if also spelled 'Tha Tum' as on my map is actually in just across the border into Surin Province and maybe his village is just north of that across the boder back into RoiEt Province... but then he also mentions staying in a hotel in RoiEt...

Given his time constraints, I would have the folks in RoiEt arrange for a van with driver to travel down to BKK and pick them up at the airport... then do the reverse... maybe also use the van around the province... maybe 1500 baht per day or so with driver plus fuel...

I agree - this is the best solution.

  5. Raised from 40 to 50 baht in Kuchinarai in Kalalsin. School children pay 20 baht.

Last time it cost me 250 baht, since the police had a "driving-without-helmet-pocket money-day", which cost me 200 baht. Strange that after I had paid the ticket, I could continue driving without helmet. :)

  6. PB Air is OUT OF BUSINESS for good. Currently, no other carrier has picked up the Roi-et route. Nok Air has picked up Sakon Nakon & Nakon Phanom, but those airports are much to far away. I believe KK is the only alternative for now.

Tims Bar, Next to 101 Bar on the Roi-Et Lake, has all thye details of Tristar Car Rental. The rental company is run by a Norweigen Guy called Stig. Both Stig and his Thai wife speak fluent English. Cars are nice, clean and new. Bit pricey though. Supply and demand i guess. Personally i rent from Fast Car in BKK and drive to Roi-Et. Only takes 6 hours and cheaper than flying. Taking the plane to KK or Udon involves 2 hour check in, hour flight, arrivals and 2-3 hour drive to Roi-Et. Better to drive to Roi-Et from BKK. Dual carriageway except 20kms. Car Hire very cheap from Fast car and they drop off and pick up at BKK Airport. Any way good luck all those Roi-Et car hirers. Regards John.

Fastcar is linked to Thai Visa car rental, though I am not quite sure if there is any price difference according to mode of booking. Anyway one interesting feature that I noticed is the availability of free one-way hire for 3 days or more hires. So even though I have my own car in Isan I decided to rent a car to get home on my forthcoming trip, when I have to take a detour that makes the usual flight to KK unsuitable.

Is no-one flying to Roi Et yet? Is KK the nearest/quickest option? I don't fancy a 6 hour trip by car/bus from BKK :)

Are there any flights from anywhere to Roi Et?

    RAZZ

    No.

  7. Another possibility: Thieves insert something into the slot where the money come out. Sits wainting accross the street watching people trying to get some money out of the ATM. But the money don't seem to be released. Then after an hour or so, they take this something away from the slot along with all the money people didn't get.

I have tried it in Denmark - to get cheated that is. And when I didn't get the menoy the first time, I tried one time more.... Grrrrhhhh :)

  8. I visited a nice place near the the centre of the town of Kalasin to have a check. One hole fixed. Nice place, good english spoken, reasonable prices. Looks like they have most of the equiptment.

I don't think they have a website, and of course I don't have the adress. It was one of these open "shops" in street level not to far from the Plaza.

    I will return.

  9. Can anybody give an update on the metered taxi service in Khon Kaen please?

Are they at the airport to meet incoming flights?

I live 130km out of the city and would welcome this service with open arms, especially at the airport.

Thanks in advance for any info

Me too! An update would be very appreciated.

Also about how to order airport limo in advance. 600-800 baht for app. 100 km to Mahsarakham looks fine to us.

  10. According to google maps the distance between the Airport in Khon Kaen and our destination is 167 km.

My calculations makes: 30 B for start + 30 B for calling + 167 x 4 for distance = 728 B in total. That would be a nice deal. Maybe they would charge something for the return?

Can anyone local see if it is possible, and if the have fixed priced for long distance like in Bangkok?

  11. We are just about finished with our house. We have used a local contractor, who has made everything.

Since we are still living outside Thailand, we had no rush. So we allowed 6 month for the project. He has used 7 months, so we are happy. We will first be back in April. Looking at several photos it looks pretty good.

He has buld many houses in Isaan including some nearby our's. So it has been easy to see what quality and price to expect.

Our house is build in Kuchinarai in Kalasin. The m2 price was 8.500 baht including everything for a nice, goodlooking, standard "farang"-style with no gold handles or anything like that.

I might be able to find his phone number if you want it.

  12. Hi, I think you have the same problem as us with the Loei Airport, not enough business to justify the flights, have to agree a real shame.

I was always staggered how an nice airport like Roi-Et's could possibly sequester enough subsidy to keep the one flight every two days. It must be shut now. You are right, it's no surprise really.

Guess Khon Kaen is the best option now.

With 3 (THREE) flights to Krung Thep every day!

    Yes, by Thai Airways

Think it might be time for an enterprising company to start airport hopping with a turboprop aircraft.

All companies are tapping the same routes: anywhere to Bangkok and back!

    Why not try other routes?

Why not Pattaya-Khon Kaen-Chiang Mai and back?

One ATR-72, two return flights a day with a stop in KK?

    KK-CM at least 6-8 buses a day, KK-Pat 10-12 buses a day.

Roi-Et to U-Tapao would be a good one.

How about Roi-et-Copenhagen? :) Well maybe in my dreams. And really I wouldn't miss a couple of days in Bangkok everynow and then.

But this will add 1½ hours of driving each way. So now renting of a minivan is a very relevant option compared to time and - as always - to price.

  13. When is FIFA finally going to arrive in the 21st Century and all video playback? It is a joke that a sport that has considerable amounts of money riding on it still does not use the technologies available :)

Even when you see slowmotion pictures people disagree about foul or not - and in the end it will be just another referee sitting in front of tv make decisions - these will then be the topic of an argue.

No way technology is the answer - it must be decide on the pitch in the actual situation.

I have heard of another suggestion, which put one or two more referees on the pitch. That would be more interesting.

But what if they disagreed on something ??

Just like today where the referee can overrule the linesmen.

So one set-up could be: two linesmen, one referee on each half of the pitch and the head-referee like today. Could be interesting to test that set-up. I am sure that would catch a lot of mistakes made today - be still not all. And still there will be situations where some will say foul and others not - no matter how documented the situation is.

  15. I cannot remember a match have ever been replayed due to a foul made by a player not noticed by the referee.

This is an example of a player making a foul - but the referee did not see it.

I am sure, that if the game is analyzed, you will find examples of Irish players making fouls not noticed by the referee.

Eat a biscuit and get on. :)

  16. Thank you for the information. I will check out your site.

    Tim

Neither of us work for him BTW, we are just residents of Surin and seen a few 'cock-ups' :)

    Dave

I have no idea of the quality Alan's work - He might be a super builder. But you write that neither of you work for him. Is that absolutely true? The Farang Connection is a sponsor of this forum and Alan has an advertisement on the Farang Connection homepage. So to me it seems there is some connection.

Alan might be good, but as mentioned above also not cheap. And it is possible to get good quality work cheaper from local builders. My best advice will always be to inspect some of the builders former work to check quality. Then you can agree on the quality level and later compare when finished.

The Oriental Hotel Bangkok is also advertised on my web-site, does that mean I have a connection with them as well. OH goody. Might make some money at long last.

I have absolutely no problems with people making business. I really wish you and Alan the best. And you seem to be one of those people that gives advertising space away for free.

It was my mistake to think, that Alan paid something to have his large advertisment in your webpage. That was the connection I thought was between you. Sorry!
