Yep! Groundhog Day all over again. Seen this headline many times before, same as campaigns against taxi drivers not using the meter, riding motorcycles on the pavement/sidewalk, cracking down on influential figures (again today), ending corruption, etc etc etc etc etc.
Still, as I've written several times before, Anutin is just today's mouthpiece who has done his job the Thai way. He has spoken, made his recommendations, and his job is done. Anything that happens later is not his responsibility. You, I, he and everyone else knows that what is said will be ignored and is unenforceable and will quickly be forgotten, but that is not the point. He has acted, done what he considers to be his job, while actually doing nothing. This happens all the time, at least once a week. Someone makes a declaration and the next day it's ignored and forgotten. But that person has done their job by 'acting'.
Correct - if only someone knew who these influential figures might be...........

The arab French had the limelight for a long time. While the french French, Italians, Germans, Spaniards, etc are good boys.
Israelis camouflage under the latter nationalities.
Worry not, the end of a certain (must not be named directly) religious period is drawing to an end! That, almost, ensures said peoples shall once again throw disregard to culture, rule of law and decency to once again claim that top spot

Ensuant debates: - what is a big bike?..... thats not a French name.... ban tourists on motorcycles, I thought they'd banned rental shops from renting to tourists without a licence, perhaps he lived here and a had a license, how can The Thaiger get the report so wrong !!!1

I merely referred to the fact, that not everybody globally -- or even in this thread -- knows what a 'poppy' is, which was countered, that this is a common custom to honor dead soldiers. While in fact this seems to be a custom quite limited to the UK and the (white?) remnants of their empire.
Why of all flowers a poppy was chosen is quite unclear to me; a reference to the Opium wars of Britain against China, maybe?
So next time, prefacing some exotic custom with an explanation, would be a lot more helpful. People would like to understand.
Of course, I think it important to commemorate the horrors of war -- not just the soldiers, but also with especially much thought given to the civilian victims of imperialist politics.
Given that the second and third commentors gave the requisite answer, it was obviously NOT so exotic nor was any preface needed. The fact that the Germans do not mark this occasion, is hardly revelatory nor expected given the very well known outcome.
The poppy is a visual reminder that we remember the fallen members of the armed forces on remembrance day.
Yet you seem to wish to make this about white imperialists - horrors have been committed for centuries, this is without dispute. The poppy (for me) is to say you are not forgotten and thank you, with the hopes that a few quid goes to the legion for these old lads and lasses. Put the soap box away!

I’m in Bristol UK , already had some guy In Palestinian garb sat on the cenotaph here playing Islamic prayer on a loud speaker . Considering how many deluded students doing degrees in useless subjects live centrally ,I’m pretty sure it’s a matter of time before this one is vandalised .
The ironic part is that those young men & women gave their lives so that this F@@K W!T can do as such!

Sadly poppy wearers are now being criticized incase they 'offend' a certain religion in our country.
Two poppy wearers proudly wear their poppies and were verbally abused and the unruly mob tried to prevent them from catching their tube, didn't end well for one gob of the hate mob.

i think it is more of a commonwealth thing... if memory serves me right the americans [i am canadian] dont really follow this tradition.
"Can I wear a poppy in the US?
In the United States, Americans don't typically wear poppies on November 11 (Veterans Day), which honors all living veterans. Instead, they wear the symbolic red flower on Memorial Day—the last Monday in May—to commemorate the sacrifice of so many men and women who have given their lives fighting for their country."Sadly it is not as widely practiced as I believe it should be.
