  1. ^ don't you need to flood the paddy as some point ? By my reconing to raise 13 rai by just 1cm would take 208 cubic meters of water, just don't think it wold be possible with a bore, it would have to be pumping 24hrs a day.

Oh I think you should do a post on rice farming as we have'nt got much on it

  2. Hi Ed

I'm not really sure of the viability of irrigating 13 rai of rice with a borehole, mostly they they irrigate rice paddy from canals or rivers.

As for drilling companies your probaly better to ask around localy, find out if other people have one and who drilled it and start from there. The chances are if no one has one then it's for a reason.

    Oh congrats on the marrage

  3. ^ Pla Nin is a species of tilapia. I've always done Pla Nin and catfish (pal dook) and the catfish don't eat the pla nin. I've lost count of the ammount of thai people that tell me they do....but in my experiance they dont, are you going on experince or what someones told you ?. Now mixing pla chon (snake head fish) in is a different story

  4. Generaly where I've seen it being grown it's by absantie landlords, they buy a piece of land and just plant some euca on it, easy to grow, no looking after. They will look to get one or two crops out of it, say about 10 years then sell the land, or even get the first then sell during the second as a "viable" euca plantation, which of course it is'nt as whatever you would get for the second crop you would end up spending at least that to get the land back into usable condition.

They will have gotten 1 or 2 crops out of it, plus the speculation that land will increace in value, a nice little earner over say about 7-10 years.

If you plant them close, thin them out at 3 years, i.e cut everyother one and then let the rest have another two.

Personaly I would'nt bother with it as with it little care they are much better crops to grow for a sustanible income. I also would'nt even entertain the idea of buying land that it's been grown on, the vast majority of people growing it don't put anything back in, I'm not even sure that it is an economicly viable crop if you fertilise it properly

  5. Black Nile Telapia-Pla nin, Red Nile Telapia- Pla tap tin

Pla Tap Tin need running water to do well, so I've been told. Pla Nin do well in ponds, you can buy different species some growing quite big others only about 6 inches, so check what you buy. I only found this out while tryiong to work out why mine were'nt growing and someone told me that, that particular species does'nt get any bigger!!

Are you looking to do this comercialy or to just supply yourself with fish ?

If it's commercial you will obviously stock at a higher rate and have to give more feed. Pla Nin and Pla dook (cat fish) go well together. The Pla Nin are veggies and the catfish eat anything. Cow manure is often used for "greening up " the water. If your looking just to stock for yourself I'd recon on about 500-1000 fish.

Last year I did 1000 of each Pla Nin and Pla Dook in a pond about half that size feeding only about a kilo of food a day (20 Bhat). We ate loads, sold some in the shop and gave loads away to family and neibours, I probably broke even. I have overflow problems on the pond so we are'nt going to do that many until I've sorted it. This year the pond is still teaming with fish from the babies of the last lot. I'm thinking of introducing about 10-20 Pla Chon in there to keep the numbers down (Pla Chon is a carnivore). I'm not feeding them this year but I should still easily keep us in fish

Toping you from a bore can be expencive, even if you have no seepage and loose just 1cm a day in evaporation that would work out on a 1 Rai pond to 16 cube a day just to keep the level. I have a bore as well, last year during dry season I would have to open the fill for the bore for about 6 hour a day just to keep a level. Apparently pond sort of self seal over time so don't be supprised that in the first year or so you loose quite a bit from seepage.

  6. I've had two of them now. I've got the one woth the top burner in the oven as well that you can use for a grill. I've never had any problems getting ours hot enough. Most regulators on the gas bottles can be adjusted to give more or less gass.

As has been said be careful if you have kids as the do get very hot

  7. Bina

When we did the paper work, it was embassy ( for the declaration that you are free to marry), translation, MFA, Ampur. We let the translation place handle the MFA and paid them, easier and much cheaper as they just sent the paperwork up to us by registered mail so we did'nt have to stay a couple of nights in BKK.

November is coming into cold season, weather should be great, I'm exactly the same as you can eat anything and sleep any where but have to have my hot shower. Given the choice of air con or hot water the water would win hands down.

The diaphram stuff sorry can help you with :o

Anyway good luck and where's my invite :D
