Heads up on this topic
Visited the new Bank of China branch in Chiang Mai behind Big C in the Chiang Mai Business Park
They have ATM's outside and it should be possible to withdraw using foreign cards without the robbing Thai banks 220B fee, but only Union Pay Cirrus and Mastercard
As I only had my Uk Visa debit card with me the transaction was declined, so will try using my prepaid Mastercard next time
Would anyone who makes a fee free withdrawal at the new BOC branch using Mastercard confirm that

So Thai typical not to refund the customer his 2,000 baht. They hate refunds and will do anything not to hand over money.
I remember this happening with a Thai fellow in a 'Kareoke' I frequent
The Mamasan offered him a choice of one of the other girls

In the North extremely unusual, they were mostly eaten out by the locals in times gone by. Flight of the Gibbon only has Gibbons because they reintroduced them to the area when they set up shop for example.
Back in about 97 I was walking on the trail above Doi Suthep and heard crashing about in the trees. I mentioned this to a western femaile volunteer at the park headquarters and she told me they had tied reintroducing about 6-10 monkeys not sure which species . She said they didn't go far from the headquarters and the locals working there had killed most of them for fear they would attack their children.

dont take talcum powder in the backpack
Also dont buy anything at the Lahu waterfall village, the folks there may phone a Pai Police contact and you will be stopped and searched on the road back to Pai and maybe asked to provide a urine sample, which will show positive if you have taken any of a long list of medications..
This will start a process which may result in you being charged then locked up in rehab for 3 months or worse! Possibly they may offer an alternative to resolve the situation ...

Yes, you need a permit and I would guess it is extremely unlikely the father had one. He is quite likely stateless, which would render ineligible for a gun permit, unless he has permanent residence. Even if he could get a permit, I doubt he would have paid the sky high prices for a registered firearm
They are nearly all documented in these villages nowadays, relatives will come from Burma to visit and work without documentation
In Lisu and Lahu villages the guns come out at Chinese new year, the legal owner of pistols will be the Head man and or deputy village head, shop/business owner and maybe the school headmaster or other goverment official. Also Lisu volunteer border guards were armed years back with carbines but disarmed due to reckless behaviour at New year...
There are illegaly held weopons usually the long muskets a hunting rifle or a single barrel shotgun.. I've seen pump action as well.

Yes.. count your change carefully when paying with 1000B at the petrol station opposite Maddog
When you find the 100B missing call them out on it and the 100B will appear.
Had the same at another station now closed near Chiang Mai gate.
Count the change yourself.. dont fall the sneaky attendant counting out the change to your hand and shorting you the 100B somehow..

Actually Bunyat was in hiding living under an alias. My guess is once they arrested his father they were able to track down his whereabouts. Why they have now arrested Laota is a more enigmatic question. There is clearly a backstory that we are not privy to.
The reasons for Laota's sting/arrest are in the original articles. He was reported to have got involved in the 'business' again and feared to have amassed enough cash to be a politician!

Hi Mickeem, did you only go to Kengtung or somewhere else, also? When I went years ago many people said they had never seen a white person before...NOT! What did you end up paying for lodging? I don't have a lot of money to throw around and would be "uncomfortable" paying a high price for a hovel. I don't remember it costing much back in the day but lately I have heard that hotel/guesthouse prices in Myanmar are rather pricey compared to Thailand perhaps for lack of competition still.
I went to kentung stayed at Charlies GH decent room Tv fan .. I knew Charlie back in the 90's now his wife runs it as he is not with us now .. 400B a night wifi and electricity only in the eve. You can rent their motorbike and ride around only if in possession of a IDP. With a visa it may be possible to go to Mongla on the Chinese border but not Taungyyi overland
I went all round town town looking for cheaper accomodation, cheap places ($5) I stayed at before no are no longer able to let 'aliens' stay as they now have to be state licenced for foreign tourists, it's the same in Tachelik. If you have a Burmese visa you can get to Kentung by a/c bus 10,000 kyat or pay Thai baht (money changers are down on the left as you leave the large Tachelik border building)

This is a bit off topic but...years ago (5 or 6, 7 maybe?) I crossed into Burma at Tachilek and went on a 4 or 5 day journey into Burma returning to the same border crossing at Tachilek. I can't recall the name of the town I went to but folks liked to call it "Chiang Mai 50 years ago." Looking at a map it must have been Keng Tung. You had to leave your passport at the border, if I recall, but no visa was required and one could not veer off a certain route. I'm wondering if that's still possible to do? Anyone? I have a multi-O Thai visa so no stamp issue for me.
I went to Kentung back in March, was able to travel independently as I had a visa issued at the new Burmese consulate in CM
If you do not have a visa you can still go to Kentung with the temporary 500B ($10) travel Burmese permit but only with an official English speaking guide at 1000B a day plus hotel/food expenses
Kentung is rapidly 'developing' many of the old shop houses have been demolished and the ethnic Chinese are putting up the usual huge concrete monstrosities. Also 'aliens' can only stay in state licenced accomodation (ie more expensive)
Other than that the beer is cheap!

I acquired a case of Hoegaarden beer a couple of days ago from over the northern border. Worked out at about 48B per small bottle which is better than the 180B charged in most restaurants . Not opened one as yet ...............stay tuned.
No need to worry It's the real thing.. drank plenty of bottles of it in Tachelik at a fraction of the Thai rip off price

That police stop on Charoen Prathet is near permanent at the moment - my tuk-tuk driver delivered a string of expletives about it as we passed through this morning.
Whereabouts on Charoen Prathet is this BIB stop ?

This ICBC seems to be a different entity to the Bank of China.
Has anyone tried making a cash withdrawal at an ICBC machine using their home bank visa/mastercard without being hit for the 200B ATM ripoff charge?

I have just seen an opening advertised for a Bank of China branch manager Chiang Mai on a well known Thai job site
Has anyone seen or know about a Chiang Mai branch being opened soon? If so where will it be situated
Hopefully they will resist implementing the Thai banking cartel extortionate foreign ATM charges unlike AEON

Not even that. These two were Burmese citizens who were probably born in Burma and whose family originated in Nepal. So the Burmese gave some Nepalese guys citizenship who would then work as labourers in Phuket and finally run drugs out of Tachilek in Myanmar into Mae Sai.
Maybe giving them citizenship might not have been such a wise decision after all.
A bit like the way the POTUS Obama is of Kenyan descent.
Quite a few Nepalese migrated to Northern Burma during and after the 2nd world world war. These will be their decendents.

Thanks for your time making a route map - there is a mistake on the marker 'I' on the Airport route you have labled it as Chiang Mai Gate (inside) it's Thapae Gate
Will the price of beer, wine and spirits go up?
