  1. you can extend either the first or second 60 days , maybe better to extend the second depending on your enter before date,

    as mario has mentioned a 60 day + 60 day + 30 day isn't actually 150 days in thailand it's 149 days,

sometimes a 1 day overstay is acceptable at worst you may have to pay an extra 500 baht when you leave,

other choice is to stay out of thailand for one night when you do the border run.

what's the enter before date writen on your visa ? and when did you enter thailand ?

  2. you can always book a cheap flight for the purpose of getting the visa then cancel it and claim a refund or partial refund.

there's some cheap air asia flights from hat yai to KL for 1090 baht in feb - you can claim back the airport tax of 900 baht, there's also a small admin fee and processing fee but if your careful you wont lose too much money.

in bali they take an extra day to process the visa compared to KL or penang etc, i don't know exactly which flights they are after maybe a flight to enter thailand and one to exit ? there's a topic about it on thaivisa .

  3. there's some air asia flights currently : hat yai to KL in feb for 1090 baht and 920 baht is airport tax - so after the admin fee you will get 720 baht back, which is correct i got back around 15 pounds.

that's the minimum price - to pay that you have to select no luggage and de-select a seat etc.

if you have scb online banking you can also avoid the 199 baht pp processing fee - which also works well.

  4. air asia give a refund on airport tax , you can find a cheap flight from hat yai to KL or bkk to KL for around 1000 baht and 700 baht is airport tax, air asia charge 200 baht admin fee.

i claimed before - the airasia web site claim system never used to be very good but they have revamped it so it maybe better now ?

i had the refund about 1 month after claiming,

  5. for what reason did you get the type-o in the first place ?

if it's for being a parent to a thai you can extend your current stay by 60 days by just showing the birth certificate.

i was in that situation and i went to vientiane and changed to a tourist visa no problem - don't tell them you have a child etc on the application form just say your on holiday.

where are you staying in thailand ? i have been to vientiane many times and can send you some information.

  6. yes you can just pop out and back into thailand at a land border this time instead of flying,

if you goto cambodia you have to pay to enter - it's supposed to be 20 $ but some people are experiencing problems at the border and have to pay extra the recomendations from people who go there often is to pay 25$ and get the online e-visa,

burma maybe an option from bkk - that's 10$ or 500 baht to enter.

you can also tie it in with a short holiday you could go and visit the temples at ankor wat or something for 3 or 4 days.

air asia sometimes have some very cheap sale flights to chiang rai or hat yai you could then pop to the malaysian border or the burmese border at mai sai is only 40 mins from chiang rai.

maybe easiest to goto cambodia but you have to pay a bit extra to enter .

  7. if moneys is no object then fly is quicker ,

if not 880 baht for the night bus 20:30 coming and going - if travelling alone best seat is probably at the front row on the top deck on left hand side has long leg room and it's on it's own.

there's no electrics on the bus.

if you buy nok air flight early you can get for less than 2000 baht one way if not 3000-3500 for last minute, there's also a nok air mini flight which costs a bit more but is more fun because flies lower and maybe shorter fly time ?

the new buses are much better these days,

if your going to the thai embassy in vientiane and want to get there the same morning flying maybe better option,

fly then 200 baht transfer to the border,

or night bus 900 baht then 700 baht private transfer to the border.

you can take cheap buses all the way but there's not many going from the udon bus station to nong khai and you may have to wait an hour - you can get a tuk tuk to take you to a different bus stop which reduces that potential hour wait to 20 mins on average.

if your going to vientiane getting back to the bus station or the airport isn't simple or cheap - if you fly back you may have to spend an extra night in udon or vientiane ?

ideally a cheap sale nok air flight for under 1000 baht is best and if you don't want to stay in udon hotels you can spend bit extra on taxis.

what are you going to udon for ?

  8. depends what time your flight leaves ?

you can get the vientiane to udon city center bus which leaves at 14:00, 15:00 or 16:30 ,, it usually takes an hour to get thru the border then another hour to udon thani - price is only 22,000 kip - they are always full and can only buy a ticket on the same day in the morning is advised , you'll have to get another tuk tuk 100 baht or so to the airport.

the bus station in vientiane is quite close to the thai consulate.

if your travelling light you can probably get dropped off at the outskirts of udon thani and get a cheap tuk tuk to the airport avoiding the city center - have a look on a map and see where the airport is - i took the bus recently and few people were talking to the driver and getting off at different locations .

you can also take a bus from nong khai to udon thani bus station but it takes a long time and you'll have to get extra tuk tuks etc so probably not worth doing.

  9. when you goto collect your passport if you go early and queue outside and be first few people in the queue you maybe out by 13:10.

i went 2 weeks ago and there wasn't many people - i was around 10th in the queue and collected my passport at 13:20.

some days they do get busy at the embassy and if that's the case and you turn up late to collect your passport i would say you will miss your flight.

i would recommend you goto the embassy around 12:00 , there's a bar/restaurant directly opposite the embassy gates where you can keep an eye when people start queuing.

tuesday afternoon and after any holidays maybe a bit busier than usual.

i would forget about the bus and take a taxi instead to the border,

you will have to get a short bus accross the bridge which costs 15 baht .

i assume your getting a visa on arrival for laos ? depending on nationality but most people pay 35$ (or 1500 baht but that's more expensive)

you may also have to pay and extra 40 baht or 9000 kip to enter and leave laos - i have never paid this and just walked past and handed my passport over if anyone asks).

unless your going to laos again in the future don't bring kip back to thailand because it's difficult to change back - keep 9,000 baht in case you need to pay to exit. you maybe also can pay in kip for the short bus trip back accross the bridge maybe 3000 or 4000 kip. you can probably pay in baht also.

good luck i think you'll probably make it.

  10. you can get the 14:00 bus from vientiane bus station,

you can only buy tickets on the same day of travel so goto the bus station early around 09:00 -10:00 am , price 22,000 kip.

i did the same trip recently and it got me into udon thai city center just before 16:00 , there wasn't much queuing

maybe you could get dropped off before the city center if your traveling light, and jump in a tuk tuk but i'd be supprised if you had enough time.

i think it might be quicker if you went from the thai embassy at 13:20 after collecting your passport, jumped in a taxi and got thru into thailand around 14:30, that leaves you around 2 hrs before your flight ,

a taxi from the border to airport should only take an hour or so.

personally i would get the bus and stay in udon an extra night.

  11. What are the current stipulations for obtaining a double tourist in Vientiane? 2k, visa application, 2 photo, copy of Laos visa on arrival, copy of first page of PP?

yup, i was there 2 weeks ago and only supplied what you listed,

maybe only one photo needed i can't remember,

take plenty of photos you may also need one for the laos visa on arival.

there's a photocopy machine at the consulate and people outside the consulate who can help you but they charge extra .

very easy to go inside and do everything yourself,

only other piece of information you need to take is the name of a hotel in vientiane to write on the application form,

  12. did the previous owner give you a copy of his i.d card or passport also ?

you may need someones help if you don't have the required paperwork from the previous owner.

ideally you should take the previous owner to the tranport office and get them to sign the application form etc.

or get an application form from the transport office and fill it in , it's written in thai so ask them which parts the previous owner needs to fill in.

do you also have a drivers licence ? i used the one residence certificate to change the name and get a licence, the people at the transport office just took a photo copy of residence certificate and i asked to keep the original.

  13. i'm fairly sure you will require a residence certificate or maybe a house book with your name in maybe ok,

residence certificates are 500 baht from immigration and to get one you will need to show proof of where your living.

is the previous owner going to help you transfer the book ? i think the previous owner needs to sign something.

you need to goto the transport office near to a bridge and the holiday inn, the office is close to the traffic lighted T junction.

i think transferring cost without having to get the tax/insurance is very cheap.

    good luck

  14. for most people who use atm's in thailand with their overseas cards each time you withdraw money you have to pay 150 baht to the thai bank,

to avoid this charge go inside the bank with your passport and ask for a cash advance,

not all branches have the facility.

i have always found the rate i receive ties in with the TT rates on this site , but that maybe a coincidence and the rate maybe set by visa or master card etc.

    http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx

cheapest way to transfer money is to get a zero fee credit card and pay the balance off as soon as you withdraw the money.
