  1. apparently the light has been coming on for the past 9 months or so.

it has also done many trips to mai sai in that time,

a couple of weeks ago i took it through some mountain roads from mai rim to hang dong it took a couple of hours up some steep hills and engine was fine.

i'm due to take it to udon thani next month so i'm thinking of doing the oil change before that.

it's just about the addatives will they help or make things worse.

i'm hoping that maybe in the last service they used a thin oil.

i don't rely on the car it's just a luxury item, i don't like driving in chiang mai much.

  2. no i don't think so.

    but i will check again,

how about those addatives i'm a bit worried they will loosen the engine and maybe make the engine more free ? reducing the oil pressure even more ?

is there anything i can do to make the engine run cooler ? maybe keep the fan running all time etc ?

or maybe using a coolent in the water system instead of plain water ?

it's not a major problem at the moment because here in chiang mai it's cold outside and i can choose when i use it.

if the oil light comes on sat at traffic for say 5 mins is there a chance something bad could happen ? does it help if i keep the revs up and switching off aircon etc ?

    many thanks,

    chris

  3. hi,

I recently purchased a diahatsu excel 1993 with 160,000 km.

i'm happy with the car except for occasionally the oil warning light comes on at low revs :

the car basically ticks over at 1000rpm - if i have the aircon running the tickover revs drop to approx. 700 rpm.

if the engine's cold - the oil warning lamp may come on if the aircon is on also at tick over.

if the engine's hot (over half way to three quarters on the temp. meter) the oil warning light comes on at say 1100 - 1200 rpm.

so at junctions or sat in traffic especially when it's hot with the aircon running i'm finding myself having to press the gas pedal to make the oil lamp go out.

i read somewhere that putting a thicker engine oil may help with oil pressure ? would thicker oil make the car engine heat up quicket though ? or run hotter ?

i have found some 20W50 in tesco lotus - it's a cheap price - would that be ok to use ?

i have also seen some engine oil addatives which reduce friction and wear etc - would it be an idea to treat with that also ?

i don't know what oil is being used at the moment.

    any advice welcome thank you.

  4. how much do you want to send ?

a u.k bank will charge you to send a wire transfer and the thai bank charge to convert pounds into baht.

the above charges are quite small but still a factor if your sending small amounts.

if you can get a credit card with zero overseas charges - halifx clarity and santander zero etc - you can then go into a bank and ask for a cash advance and wont receive any fees.

i have a santander zero , it's limited to 300 pounds a day but i have transferred thousands of pounds into thailand with it and not paid a penny in charges.

if your going to send larger amounts then maybe wire transfer is better - you can compare the different thai banks here :

    http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx

the wire transfers take a few days so if you want to get a gaurantted rate then maybe a company like hifx or moneycorp can be used - i have used smartcurrency exchange in the past and they were giving rates with-in 0.5% of the interbank rate and no fee if over 3000 pounds converted into baht.

scb seem to always have a good TT rate.

  5. i'm just wondering why you didn't go for the 1 year multi ?

so now you have 3 months to put a lump sum in a thai bank and you can then extend this 3 month one to a 1 year one for 1900 baht ?

once you entend to 1 year you now just have to report to immigration instead of doing border runs ? any idea how much the reports cost ?

when you goto the uk in october will you need to get a re-entry permit ? 1000 baht ? if not does the extension close ?

the reason i ask is because i'm thinking of getting married.

i have a tpye o multi at the moment (based on thai child) and it's due to finish in may, i can't decide what's best to do.

i have a flight from chiang mai to KL booked already for may , i was planning to post my passport back to the u.k to get another 1 year multi.

ideally i should try and extend my current visa , i don't really want to get married but i'm thinking it maybe an option ?

  6. you can get a bus from chiang rai to mai sai it's only 40 minutes or you can find someone private to take you.

no need for a company really.

you can just goto the burmese immigration on the bridge and say no shopping and you get to keep your passport and can walk back into thailand .

or you can go shopping in tachilek but your passport remains at the border.

    cost is 500 baht .

    laos costs 1500 baht.

  7. no your second entry wont be limted to 10 days you will get 60 days added on (it's ok for the visa to expire and still be in thailand).

there is also a system here to extend each entry - that costs 1900 baht each time so you could extend the first to get that 10 days and also extend the second entry and will get 30 days on that one.

you can also have a gap between the entries so when you goto a border for the activation of the second visa entry you can stay in that neighboring country for say 7-9 days if you want.

like mario said you have a enter before date shown on the visa so make sure you come back into thailand the second time a day before that date printed on the visa.

you wont really lose much by applying very early as long as you get the 6 months validity and not 3 .

    :)

  8. maybe your meter has broken, have you switched off all appliances and lights etc to see if the meter still counts up ?

what type of premisis / business do you have ?

are you sure the electricity company haven't just changed your price per unit ?

how many appliances are you running ?

can you check the numbers on your bill and meter to make sure they tie in ?

checking your wiring and light circuits is quite easy for an electrician - they can do this with a meter called a megger.

to test to see if your appliances are using too much electricity isn't so easy but you could try and get hold of current clamp meter that easily clips around cables.

sorry i don't have any tools or eqipment here if i did then would be happy to help,

  9. hi,

you can do either upto you,

it depends how long you want to stay in thailand and how much you want to spend and your location for getting to border runs.

each of the 3 entries can be extended for 1900 baht each.

your maximum stay can potentially be 270 days from when your visa was issued.

it does get complicated with the different dates and options but first step is to make a plan ,

send some info. and can advise you ,

    regards,

    chris

  10. if you rent by the day prices at the moment start from 1000 baht , and can easily be found in the city, they do reductions for longer periods, i think a whole month you should be able to get something around 500 - 700 baht a day.

you could try avis - they do some good deals but i think you have to call them ?

i have a car and thinking about renting it out , if you can't find something suitable maybe can take a look at mine,

    chris

  11. yes that's right,

if you wanted to save money on the first extension you could do as i suggested but you would need an extra trip to the border if that's convenient and cost affective.

your first extension will only last for 25 days if you apply for the visa 5 days b4 you arrive.

you'll have 2 dates in your passport one will be the date the entension finishes but you have to do the border run before that date (see enter before date written on the visa - goto malaysia one day before that, after that the visa has expired).

if you goto samui you can always fly to cambodia etc to get another visa.

  12. internet in vientiane is okay, coffee shops and larger hotels etc many internet cafes also.

you should check out nok air asap (chiang mai to udon thani) they have some good flights for you on the 7th and 8th of feb. 2200 baht return and the times are perfect. there's a mini bus service from the airport to the border for 150 baht, then you can get a taxi direct to the embassy before 11:30.

or you can take the night bus and taxis etc but it's a lot of hassle and if you want to get to the embassy in the morning will end up costing about the same.

    laos costs 35$ to enter.

    i haven't been to Savannakhet.

    any questions please ask,

  13. it maybe an idea to call air asia and see if everythings ok or maybe print off there policy to show the check in clerk .

if you do have problems checking in aparently there's a document you can sign saying that you will pay for any fines etc and not the airline - ask to speak to a manager if the clerk is in-experienced.

at a last resort you may have to quickly buy any cheap ticket with in 30 days and hopefully you'll get a refund if you don't use it or you could use it for when you do your border run.

you could actually stay in thailand legally forever and not ever leave for example you could start a family and get married,

i think you'll be fine just need to know your rights.

  14. i think this guys staying in phuket or maybe samui , i recognise his name from a prevous post,

he wants to know about travelling through south thailand and popping into malaysia for a border run if he gets a double visa or riding onto penang to get a new single entry tourist visa.

i think you will have have a bike in your name if you want to take it outside thailand a rental bike doubtful they will let that out of the country,

from samui i'd imagine would be a nitemare on boats etc but phuket should be dooable ?

if you only get a single and you don'y buy a bike that will mess up your palns so maybe better to get a double ? with a double you can always pop to the border and leave the bike in thailand ?

if the trip from phuket to malaysia border is easy and you come to thailand with a single entry visa here's what i would do :

fly into thailand and use the 30 days visa exempt entry (don't write the visa number on the arival card)

after 30 days ride to malaysia border maybe on a rental bike ?

activate your 60 day tourist visa

goto immigration office and extend 30 days.

so from one tourist visa you can stay 120 days

if your allowed to ride to penang go and get another single entry

when you come back into thailand either activate the visa or you could use a visa exempt entry but this time only 15 days.

are you flying to thaialnd on a one way ticket ?

i think in KL the hotels and taxi's etc are much more expensive than thailand

  15. if you don't get a visa then air asia may ask about your return ticket with in 30 days, it depends if you have a fly thru ticket from london to bkk ?

or you may have to check in again at KL ?

call hull and ask them how to apply thru the post, they should send you some info. thru e-mail.

i don't know if you have worked out the jargon yet and how to use tourist visas ? but a double entry means you can enter thailand twice,

you have to pop out of thailand and back in to activate your next stay which is 60 days with option to add another 30.

from bkk you can goto cambodia or burma for this only takes a day or you can visit another country for longer if you want.

    many options

  16. how long are you thinking of staying in thailand ?

if it's possibly a long time then get a triple tourist visa which will be good for approx. 9 months if used correctly,

if you only get a double you may look back and wish that for a little bit

extra money you should have got the triple.

your coming with air asia right ? you wont have the same problem boarding the plane from uk to KL.

(it's long haul flights into thailand where they check for visa or onward travel with in 30 days)

anyway if you get a visa no problem,

apply through the post only takes 3-4 working days - send monday morning first class, apply 1-2 weeks b4 travel.

don't say you maybe working , just say your on holiday and mention a few holiday destinations.

i have used hull with no problems.

    good luck

    chris

  17. you will have to apply for a new double entry tourist visa and as soon as you exit on your current visa it is void.

i suspect the triple entry has a validity of 6 months from issue and the new double visa you will get will have a 3 month validity ,

you need to think about when the visas are going to expire and if your doing any more extensions.

with the triple entry are you going to extend that each time and on the last day or so it expires (enter beofore date on visa) do the final entry making your stay in thailand as long as possible ? if you are then need to make sure both visas are valid for your plans.
