  1. To the op: I think it is a good idea to pawn your stuff. 10k is not a lot of money and from my experience Thai pawn shops pay rather good money for used stuff. If your friends won't come up with any difference, try working online. Pays peanuts but it's easy money... doing transcription, subtitles, rewriting articles for SEO etc... anyone can do it, no experience needed. If you can only speak English then you will have to compete with a lot of Indians, Filipinos, hence the low pay.

Another tip: Write about your situation in the Bangkok Business Expats Facebook group or in similar groups. Maybe some people will donate and some might actually have to odd job for you.

  2. ALL the Tesco Express markets I have been to in Thailand (quite a few of them) didn't restock their beer fridges for hours. In fact, most of the time their fridges were mostly empty. How is that? They are making a killing on beer and don't even feel the need to restock fridges within any 12-hour window... pretty poor management nationwide.

self checkout machines are the norm in my home country, scan, pay and go, easy as that. thailand supermarkets need to invest in them, the cashier staff are sooooo slow.

Not a very clever thing to do in a rather poor country where the incentive to steal is high and staff only costs you the equivalent of one bottle of low-grade rum a day.

  4. To all the people worrying about being refused entry to Cambodia: This is like the most corrupt country in all of SE Asia. The immigration department (!) at their international (!) airport in the capital (!) city tries to scam nearly ALL passengers who pay with anything bigger than 20 notes by shortchanging them on their visa fee. Don't even get me started on places like Poi Pet or Koh Kong. In the worst case, 5-10$ will smooth over a washed passport for sure.

Your biggest worry should be airlines who can be a bit of a pain when it comes to passengers and their visas, travel documents etc.

  5. Washed my passport in Australia. Passed 7 international airports afterwards but after getting a lecture at most of them was let through. What are they going to do? Not let you leave their country? Just go for it. >99% chance they'll look a bit grumpy (as usual), have a quick chat and let you go eventually. Just explain and be polite.

It has also been attributed to suicidal tendencies in some people, they get a strong feeling of remorse while taking it.  I wouldn't take it once on anyone's orders, doctors or otherwise.

What's so wrong with Xanax? Taking one just makes me feel relaxed, not drowsy or high. I would think there is worse things than a regular (!) dose of Xanax. The dangers and consequences of a relapse far outweigh the potential risks of Xanax.

Since you brought up suicidal tendencies... what to you think is worse for messing up your brain in the long term, leading to depression and making you jump off a Pattaya balcony? Xanax or alcohol?

some fortunate people get unlimited credit, for some it's zero drinks and yet others maybe 5000, 100,000 etc.

But I think you just described some inherent flaw there... as if alcoholism was completely in your physical make-up and not just a co-factor. I'm pretty sure your "unlimited" person will also become an alcoholic if he suffers from some trauma and starts drinking a liter of vodka a day.

  8. I don't agree with the concept of some inheritent flaw in someone's make-up that makes you an alcoholic. My take is that it can happen to anyone if they just kept drinking long enough and/or went through some tough times. There always is some underlying problem which you need to look at. Once you sorted this out, your desire to drink will eventually subside.

Cutting down doesn't work, but after you faced your demons you won't even want to feel the constant need for a buzz. Just my opinion.

And for the record: Let OP take his sleeping pills for the first few weeks if he has to. It is virtually impossible to get dependant on stuff like Benadryl but proper sleep will boost morale immensely.

The same thing happens in Chumphon and I should add that it is not solely residents of Thailand to blame. When the Pacific monsoon blows all the crap from the gulf and from the ocean around Vietnam, Philippines and  SE Malaysia gets pushed onto the Southern Thai and Malaysian coasts. The authorities in Chumphon let it build up because cleaning every day is futile. By February the beaches are usually beautiful again.

Look at the labels. 99% is Thai trash.

  10. I started a topic in here earlier asking for advice. I was drinking a carton of beer a day and stopped pretty much cold turkey. Had a couple of relapses but who cares. Had to deal with a lot of anxiety and trouble sleeping. Putting too much pressure on yourself just stops you from trying and succeding. As long as you keep on trying you have not failed. I do the following:

    1) Only ever drink beer if you have to. I had the worst nights when friends dragged me into a night club where beer was unaffordable and we had to open liquor bottles.

    2) Don't be mad at yourself if you overdid it. Nobody is perfect. Every day can be a new start. For every bottle you drink less your body and mind will thank you in the long run.

    3) Try to get some meaning into your life. I was bored to death in Pattaya and all I could ever do was drinking. Get a hobby, get spiritual, travel around, read a book, learn Thai, get into cooking, watch some movies, get a proper GF... there is many more things to life than sitting alone in a bar and chatting with some hookers.

What helped me with the anxiety was diazepam. Available if you ask around.. or if money is not an issue get it from a hospital pharmacy. For sleeping I recommend OTC medicine containing diphenhydramine hydrochloride. Keeps me sleeping like a baby for 8-15 hours straight (depending on how much sleep I missed the previous days).

And try to keep in mind that any shitty feeling/nightmares/insomnia is not caused by stopping alcohol but the result of abusing alcohol in the first place.

Sounds like your mrs has a shop.

There was talk about the license to sell alcohol going up from 2,000 baht to 50,000.

Or is that just a furfy and business as usual.

That's 140 Baht a day. At the usual minimart markup of 17% that would be like the previous profit of the first 15 big beers sold each day going directly to the government if current markups were to remain. Unlikely.

  12. You seem to misunderstand something. These 38% are pure profit, no extra (excise) tax has to be paid on it. 18 Baht profit a beer certainly adds up to more than 50-70 Baht a day.

600 baht ....  you are living the dream :shock1:

Certainly more clever than all the 5000 Baht a night rooms suggested before. You can get a VERY decent apartment-style room for 800 Baht. 1200 gets you a really nice room almost anywhere and near all the amenities (for example in Soi 8).

Why pay more to have some fancy hotel with some guy who brings your bag upstairs? Why do you need breakfast and room service when there is a restaurant in every second shophouse? I have stayed in expensive rooms before and I can't really tell why they were more expensive apart from some shiny lobby. The rooms certainly weren't nicer than the ones that were around 1000 Baht.

I was amazes Beer prices in Shag City were the same as I payed upcountry , 65 to 90 ish , then realized it was only a half bottle n no Glass.[emoji481]?

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

These small bottles are the worst invention ever. I try to avoid bars not selling big ones but it's getting pretty tough. Why should I pay 30% more just so the bar can sell more of their silly small bottles? Why not offer both sizes?

FYI, in proper Thai places you can't even get small bottles. This is all a farang and a rip-off thing.

Yup, went into McDonald's & was asked if I wanted to "upsize" my order.

Now, the correct form would have been:

"Sir, would you care to have a larger burger?"

    My reply would have been:

"Madam, my burger is large enough"

Since off-topic is allowed: Upsizing in McD refers to the size of your fries and soft drink... nothing to do with burgers.

Is it Koh chang ? The only day of the year without rain ?

    :-)

It's all Koh Chang. I found the weather in Koh Chang to be the nicest (for me) in Thailand. Compared to countries in Europe, Thailand is rather big and the weather varies a lot throughout the provinces. For example, December is the wettest month in Koh Samui while in Pattaya December hardly sees any rain (being the driest month there).

But I suspect you not like the rain so much but rather the escape from the heat? If so, look up north. Bloody freezing around Chiang Mai when I was there.

If you always wanna be in the rain, why not move around? May to October in Central Thailand and the other months down south. The only month without much rain would be March I guess.
