Actually, Trump may be using Obama's playbook from 2008....

[The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 provided payments averaging $600 per person, injecting more than $100 billion into the economy within a matter of months.]

[The payments were directly deposited into bank accounts by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to taxpayers who filed their taxes electronically, or came as paper checks to other taxpayers. Individuals who didn't make enough to pay federal taxes still had to file an IRS statement that year to get a payment.]

[Economists concluded that it was one of the most effective measures deployed to blunt the impact of the worst downturn since the 1930s.]

I do recall receiving money from the IRS through direct deposit, but can't remember how much.  And yes, I was in Thailand at the time.

That is exactly how I remember it, too. A similar system will likely be responsible for payouts this time, too, especially since they are promising the money within two weeks. Two weeks is not a lot of time to create paperwork, have people apply, then be screened, then approved, and only then get the money.

  2. They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear
I was always there right on the job

They used to tell me I was building a dream
    With peace and glory ahead
Why should I be standing in line
    Just waiting for bread?

Once I built a railroad, I made it run
    Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?

I see your point on distribution of 1k by means, or to those under a certain income level. I do believe that hardship for people on min wages, paycheck to paycheck will be significant, potentially life altering. But making the determination of what that income level should be, may be difficult. Perhaps, under 100k, or even less?

Getting better. But I like the idea that we are all in this together. A few at the top (I'm talking about you Boeing) should not make out like bandits for designing faulty airplanes and using their loans and profits to buy back their own stock. No firm that engaged in stock buybacks should get any bailout money until and unless they they sell off the stock they bought back.

Concerning public health, foreigners coming from six infected zones - China, Macao, Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, and Iran - as well as countries with continuing transmission of the virus, are required to have health certificates issued in the previous three days, as well as health insurance coverage.

This seems unclear. With the inclusion of "as well as" he seems to be adding the second group of countries "with local transmission," which would, then, now include the US and UK, along with Germany, France, and Japan. The only people being allowed in without paperwork, it appears, are Russians and Indians.

Given the very high unemployment rate we are about to experience, I agree, healthcare will loom large. Biden is marginally better on that but still terrible. For my family Trump would be better though I could never vote for him. So my financial calculus is Biden worth the extra $!0k/yr I'm paying for Obamacare. Of course healthcare isn't the only issue.

It will mostly be about debt. I suspect a sizable majority of Americans are already so debt burdened that a couple of weeks without a salary will push them over the edge. Unless mortgages, loans, and credit card balances disappear, people will be nothing but debt serfs for the rest of their lives. The Fed may go to ZIRP or NIRP but those credit cards are not budging from 20 percent interest rates. As far as health care, I do believe there are a lot of people in government gleefully, albeit quietly, rubbing their hands together over the prospect of this virus doing away with the sickest of the sick and the very elderly and thus "saving" Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.

Retired military, that is called a pension, and you are damn right we deserve it! The situation of injecting cash into the United States economy, as part of an economic stimulus in response to crisis, is not meant to stimulate the Thai economy. That is obvious. Residency in the USA, proved by having local address should be a requirement. Residing in Bangkok!

And if I live in Bangkok and purchase things from the US, that doesn't stimulate the US economy? BTW, I stimulate spend a lot more than $1000 every month in the US, although I'm still in Bangkok.

Check in the mail to a verified address with in the USA or one of its territories or pick it up in person with valid federally recognized ID such as a driving license with the star and TSA endorsement..

You want to pile on costs to the program, just because you have a vendetta against expats because you felt mistreated in Thailand. Well, guess what, they'll do this the same way they did it last time, when Obama cut a $400 check to everyone and had it direct deposited. Everyone was eligible by having filed taxes the year before or by filing a blank form if you were on SS or disability? BTW, are you getting a monthly check from the government already?

The rugged individualists are totally conflicted right now. Their demigod acting like he is Bernie Sanders.

If you're a corporation. But if you're an individual and want health care. Well, wait a minute. You see, that is baaad socialism. Trump will use the $1000 per (individual or household?) to hide behind his multi trillion dollar giveaway of taxpayer money to the likes of Boeing, the cruise ship companies, and airlines.
