  1. This isn't really strictly linux related but I'm posting it here because most of you will know what I'm talking about and many of you probably have similar setups.

I have both my home and office routers configured for multiple incoming connections, ssh, RDP, VNC, HTTPS, etc, etc and suddenly in the past week or 2 I am no longer able to make any remote connections to either location. I called True and of course the agent had no idea what I was actually asking her, but before I call back I and wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this?

I just did a little testing and find that although my router is showing an IP in the 100.x.x.x range, an IP lookup is showing a 58.x.x.x address. ?! Although I am an IT administrator networking is not my strongest skill, anyone have any idea what they are doing here so I can <deleted> them out correctly when I call to complain again?

  2. The crazy speculation. The low grade hack Veronica Pedrosa on Al Jazeera , who is very anti military government , suggested possibility of Military planting bomb itself!

She will have some supporters on this forum as well!

Why can't people park the speculation for now and see what forensic analysis, and intelligence, reveals in due course.

Forensic analysis and intelligence, are you serious?! You must not live here

  3. I'll leave you tonight with a quote from the Secunia report in the OP:

But the biggest security disasters of the year were in open source software with HeartBleed, SSL and ShellShock. Secunia notes that these problems "brought attention to a previously neglected potential security issue: the use of open source applications and libraries in IT environments." It adds: "It is therefore important to be aware of which open source libraries are in use in an environment, and to have a solid mitigation strategy in place. Because the applications that use these libraries are not always patched - often, they are not even reported vulnerable."

Which all had little, if any impact on the average desktop user. Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't that what we are taking about?

  4. Do you backup your machine to an external drive? The Win 7 Ultimate version onward has the built-in capacity to image your machine. Why not do that after you get all of your programs installed again? External USB drives are cheap and Windows will let you create a restore disk to boot from so you can restore your image. Actually, before you install your programs, why not get the Win 10 technical preview? It's free and with the increased number of programs on the web, you can probably dispense with some of your installed programs. Check out the nifty new version of Outlook which has some capabilities that gmail doesn't as well as a button on the upper left that connects you to Calendar, One Drive and the online office apps with one click. Windows 10 is getting good reviews from the various IT commentators.

    <shudder>

  5. As AyG points out, most Linux vulnerabilities are patched within days (if not hours) of discovery, while Redmond and Oracle sometimes take weeks before patches are available. If you update daily or even weekly there is very little chance of a Linux desktop being exploited. If you are a server admin then you should probably lose your job if you are not on top of these issues on a daily basis.

  6. I am a system administrator and security specialist who gets paid fairly well for my expertise, and I help many people with many issues even here which you would know of you researched my post history. You pretend to know what you are talking about, but in fact often lead people into deeper problems (if they are foolish enough to take your advice as fact) and have a tendency to encourage the continued use of pirated software, which is often the root cause of the problems you profess to know all the solutions for. You should stick to your profession (which I suspect is an English teacher) and leave the serious stuff to the big boys who know what they are talking about

  7. Im with dharmabm and mr somtam, iptables and rkhunter work for me.

And any staff who install baidu on work machines are instantly fired for gross misconduct.

Why not just save yourself the headache and remove the ability for them to install any software?

(I go a step further and block all internet access for all but a few computers that need it to do their job.)

You're criticizing my posts, but you seem to be a very ignorant and inexperienced guy regarding computer soft- and hardware.

Your step further to "block all internet access", doesn't make you to a better person.

BTW, nobody, and I mean nobody was pleasing you to reply, or comment on this one.

When you read it again, you might find out that I wrote " my opinion." And that's what it is.

I shared my experience with others, because there're some people on this forum who'd helped me.

Did you ever help anybody else, excluding yourself? I doubt it, when reading your post.

Please just ignore my posts in the future, Sir. Thanks a lot for your kindness..wai2.gif

  9. OK, first off - what usenet service are you using, and what country(ies) is it served from?

Usenet has been dying a slow death for years now, and especially over the past 3 years since DMCA hit the scene with a sledgehammer and customer levels plummeted...

Works fine for me. And Usenet will never die, it'll just burrow further underground [emoji12]

  10. Would help to know your operating system, the models of both printers and the printer driver you are using for the network printer. Also, how is the pos printer connected (USB, parallel, serial,...)

Also, is the network printer a true network printer or a local one shared from another PC?

  11. If you want to give Linux a try, why in the world would you want the most 'windows like' distro available? Take the advice that most anyone gives and use mint or lububtu. Far more support available of you encounter any problems

Because in the past, when I've used Ubuntu, half of my frustrations were not being able to find anything.

With Zorin, I know where everything is.

I didn't say anything about Ubuntu, I recommended mint or lubuntu

  13. http://bit.ly/husham2015 Is the m3u link you use to get 8000 odd channels when you set up your live tv client on xbmc. There are plenty of utube vids that show you how to do that just google xbmc live TV set up.

Also another m3u list of around 200 channels just converted into an addon - it's called vdubtv25

For TV shows and movies I use the 1 channel and genisis addons.

Thanks a lot for the Genesis tip, so far I'm finding this much better than Phoenix and 1channel
