  1. OP.

I work for an AV company (product mentioned elsewhere in this thread), and your suggestion AV firms create the viri first is really quite bonkers. I could take offence to your comments, but in this case i'll pass as you're quite literally under informed.

The popup you got was most likely an innocent site, but a ad somewhere was injected with the popup, it's called ransomware.

I could give you NDA covered information were these viri and malware originate from, but then i'd be putting my job at risk. Lets just say there's a big continent involved.

What I will say (and heck, why do it) is that we not only use our own signatures for event detection, but also two, maybe three big name AV suppliers signatures too. And we share ours back on a 15 minute cycle. This is at an infrastructure level, so there's no way malware of a virus can pass through after it's second sighting.

Now, toddle off and get some real time detection on your machinery - even free scanners like AVG etc use most signature databases to collate their dictionaries.....

    Hahahahahaha...

Well I believe you, at least you almost spelled the plural of virus properly

  2. Remove the battery and see if the problems go away. You should mention what your make/model is, but I used to service dell laptops that would refuse to start if a bad battery was detected. Maybe your 'cleaning' messed up the charging contacts?

    too slow

  3. Thanks @kittenkong for the clarification. I have a friend who uses Vonage which gives him a US number along with a VoIP phone for a reasonable monthly rate, and although it does not forward to his Thai mobile it does send him messages when a call is missed and he can retrieve voicemails as well. I am pretty sure what I am looking for is possible but I just don't know what the service is called or how much it may cost. I want a US phone number that will forward to my Thai mobile.

  4. Although I am quite a techie (having made my living off of tech knowledge for quite some time) I still get confused about sip options. As I understand it there are 2 distinct situations

1-wanting a local number in your home country that can be forwarded to your Thai number that friends, family and business associates can use to call you, and

2-having a local Thai number that you can call your home country as if it were a local number.

First of all, am I correct in this assumption? Second, is there any service that can provide both without breaking the bank?

I've been a bit of an ass in this thread so far, but the info provided has been very helpful. Please forgive my previous indiscretions and help us all understand the issue more fully.

  5. Not yet convinced? Try out VoipTiger now

Register now and receive €0,15 in FREE call credit! Good for about 10 minutes depending on your destination. You can test VoipTiger for free, without any additional charges or commitment.

Woohoo! €0.15!!! How much of that goldmine do you get if I click on that link?

He gets none at all: it is not an affiliate link.

The text and link are copied directly from the VoipTiger website.

i know, i was just trying to be funny (AKA being a dick)

  7. I've been using systemd for quite some time now as my primary puter runs Arch, but the more I learn about it the less I want it. I am now testing the fsf Debian derivative to be sure I know what my computer is doing. <deleted> the NSA!

  8. What's your home country - may be useful when recommending a decent SIP provider.

If you're thinking of using one overseas, be warned that jitter and latency will be a problem -ex SIP engineer here.

If you want to do it on the cheap, there are many providers who will give you a free DID number for incoming calls.

    Can you list a few?

  9. I can never understand why people pay for that TV service ?

    3.99 for proxy address

Cheap laptop hooked up to TV Hdmi

    Hulu

    Netflix

    Amazon subscriptions

Much less money and a lot more choices!

While I agree with the sentiment I do not agree with your solutions. An old computer and xbmc(kodi) is all you need... And for free

  10. No problem, I was bored today [emoji6] another trick you can sometimes use in these situations is to look at the URL address, in this case you were redirected to th.premierleague.com/th-th.html so you can sometimes just sed s/th/en (showing off my geekiness, replace all the 'th's with 'en's)

  11. I just checked in lightning browser on my android phone and that particular site automatically redirects to the Thai version, but there is a dropdown menu just to the left of the fantasy premier league link at the bottom of the header (above the red bar) which has your language selections

  12. Why not use IE?

You could try Opera if you don't want to go the IE route.

I used firefox for years but it had unnecessary disk activity when the computer was idle so I ditched it.

Now use IE 11 cant find any problems with it.

    Worst advice ever

  13. +1 to ADW cleaner, the girlfriend has this on her laptop, did a google search and found an old thaivisa thread recommending ADW cleaner or UnHackMe

Malwarebytes is not enough for the 555 browser hacker but a good program to run anyway to clean other stuff up

Thanks a lot. I've tried almost all programs, but it always came back. It's obvious that it came from a Thai website, as our son's always playing some weird online games.

But now he's got his own PC and he doesn't have that problem. Will try UNHackMe.....and keep you up to date...

    Cheers-

If it keeps coming back it is most likely that someone keeps reinstalling the broken program or game that includes it.

  14. Most of us would shit in our pants if we knew how many times our traffic actually is and was analysed.

I think most of us don't give a toss.

Maybe you don't, but don't include me in your 'most of us'. I have nothing to hide, but don't care to have my s4it being monitored. Better safe than sorry as my grandmother used to say

  15. Lovely story.... My son is 7 and all he wants to do is play minecraft. We already run several modded servers (and he is picking up quickly on how it all works), now I need to nudge him towards writing plugins. Only problem is, I couldn't code my way out of a paper bag!

  16. I'm on the case.

I've bought a WD My Passport Ultra and I am copying my files onto it.

The scary bit is that when I install Windows 7, everything will be erased, so I've got to be confident that all my files are safely on the Passport and can be transferred.

I am intending to buy a 2GB RAM and either install it myself or pay a geek to do it. Does anybody know of a computer shop where i might get this done, in the area of Pattaya?

Google for a program called driveimageXML. If the external drive is big enough you can save an image of your whole drive, in case you forget something like your bookmarks, favorites or email configuration
