  1. I found ONE of the Hitchcock box sets at the Esplanade. This is "Collection 3" with Rear Window, The Birds, Vertigo and Psycho. Was hoping to find the set with North by Northwest. Thanks for any ideas.

  2. Is that 3110 pretty durable? I will also miss the place to attach a leash - that helped me on my 6110.

Hmmm, not sure what qualifies as durable? My guess is that it is as durable as any phone. I use an inexpensive (100 baht) zippered, padded case for my phones. I've dropped the case a few times with the phone in it, and the phone survived.

The Nokia 3110 Classic does have a connection for a leash, most phones do.

Re: backing up numbers, you could buy a SIM for as little as 59 baht and back you numbers to that (Copy Contacts from Phone to SIM)? Top it up for 1 year for 100 baht and you're good to go if you lose your phone, buy a new/used one and plug the back-up SIM in.

At MBK buy at one of the box-shops, i.e. wholesale shop. There are ~ 10 box shops, identified by the stacks and stacks of phones in boxes; this is where the counter-shops go to get your phone if you buy from them. You can save ~ 100 - 250 baht. I buy at NASA, if entering the phone area on the 4th floor from Tokiyu, go the left, far wall and look for the crowd of Thai people. I think the 3110 C should be available for 4,000 THB or less?

You can compare up to four Nokia models at: http://www.nokia-asia.com/comparephonesconsumerapac

thanks for that. I think the No Leash thing is a deal breaker on the 3110 tho. headed to MBK will try to find NASA store. thanks again.

  3. which model Nokia are you using? so many models. I need tri-band and maybe bluetooth - nothing else really.

Well with requirements for tri-band (900/1800/1900 presumably? or WDCDMA?) and bluetooth you've moved up into the mid-range.

    What is your budget?

Do you really need to back up "contacts" or just names/phone numbers? How many?

    Do you synch to Outlook?

If you just need to back up names/numbers you can always just get a spare SIM and copy everything to that, then store it. If you really need to back-up contacts (names, addresses, phone numbers, email, etc.) you might need a more sophisticated solution which might synch to your contact managemet software.

The Nokia 3110 Classic is tri-band (900/1800/1900), has bluetooth (also a standard mini-USB connector) and is relatively inexpensive (4,000 THB, although it does have a lot of things you might not need: 2 GB uSD, MP3 player, camera/video/GPRS-EDGE). You can back-up contacts a variety of ways using Nokia PC Suite. Many bluetooth PC applications also have file manager access so you might be able to back-up contacts via that method.

Is that 3110 pretty durable? I will also miss the place to attach a leash - that helped me on my 6110.

  4. I use Motorola for a while and the software is easy to use and syncs with outlook. You can also export to csv files and other formats.

headed out to MBK today to look. Hopefully figure something out. Nokia has worked well for me, might check on the least expensive with bluetooth.

  5. I really only need to backup phone numbers in case of a lost phone. i've never been able to find anyone that would do a firmware update on a Nokia in Bangkok. 3110 sounds like it might work. I like that they did away with that silly connector on the bottom and use a regular USB cable. E-51? budget is 6000b or so - just need a phone.

  6. I have an older Nokia 6610 tht is hard to backup contacts to PC. Can someone recommend a phone that is easy to backup to PC? Something that has easy software available. I do not need video and MP3 player really. just a good solid phone. prefer smaller. I've asked at several places in MBK with no real answers. thx

I was a dedicated Sony Ericsson user. Then I bought my first Nokia. I was horrified with the VERY buggy software furnished by Nokia. I downloaded the new Nokia Suite recommended for the Nokia model I was using and most of the problems went away. I have since upgraded to a newer Nokia and the newest Nokia Suite and find I have no problems backing up my phone and swapping files or connecting to the Internet. I think if you spend a little time getting the phone firmware updated and the correct Nokia Suite version, your problems will go away.

the nokia PC Suite sure is a lot of software to run just to backup. never worked that well for me. always had problems with the cable connection at the phone end too.

which model Nokia are you using? so many models. I need tri-band and maybe bluetooth - nothing else really.

  8. I've given up buying DVD';s and/or music CD in LOS. Generally they are very poor quality and poor title selection.

Have order dozens from Amazon and not affected by crappy exchange rate, pay in $ US against CC.

Only drawback is it usually takes about 2 weeks for shipping and rarly have to pay duty.

Yes but I need DVDs with Thai subtitles for my Thai friend in USA. Too bad those Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are still high cuz a lot of those have Thai subtitles.

  9. wonder what you mean by 'good selection'?

If you like British TV series like Only Fools & Horses, Life on Mars, Prime Suspect etc. then Jam Session on 1st floor of Fenix Tower (corner Suk soi 31) has a wide range. Plus other films, some more classic.

I was looking for a few - Blissfully Yours and Tears of the Black Tiger come to mind. Thanks for the place in Suk.

  10. My sister will make her first trip soon. Looking for something nice maybe 2000 baht a night - can go more if we need to. Was thinking about the Patumwan House, Soi Kasemsan 1 as a resonable place close to MBK etc. Would be nice to find something with internet WiFi or wired in the room. Many hotels offer this now, but the prices are very high and not a flat daily fee.

  11. Turns out it's this goofy companny I signed up with for hosting. dotster.com blocking my outgoing mail. They say I have a virus. I just scanned with Nod32 and have no virus. Looking for a new hosting company.

Big help would be knowing the outgoing server address for TOT. Still trying to find a phone number for them.

  12. totadsl.th.com does not work now for some reason. Worked last year. Both my hotel and my friends place use TOT DSL, would like to find an outgoing mail server that works. When using my own domains outgoing server, that worked once, now get some sort of "spamblocked" error.

  13. Thanks for that. I had just made reservations for a room here, they say the wireless reaches all the rooms.

When I was in Udon recently, I made good use of the free wireless internet at the Irish Clock pub (they have some tables close to wall plugs too, so you dont necessarily have to use the battery either).

This might be a good alternative unless you need to use the Internet for extended periods of time.

  14. I guess his neighbors are draining their roof into his house and its pretty bad. I have not seen it yet - headed there today. Anyone know someone that can help? I told him to get an electric sump pump, but he says it's just too much for that.

  15. I had the same problem with my Nokia 6230i. It was so frustrating as the phone would close the GPRS connection after a few minutes. After a few days, I discovered a few things.

    1. Go to a Nokia Authorized Service Centre and get them to upgrade the firmware in your phone.

    2. Bluetooth may not always work properly, the Bluetooth that phones and other devices use is not the same set as what a computer will use.

Now with the upgraded firmware and a data cable, the connection is good. In BKK I am getting speeds better than 120K, upcountry I can measure it around 44k.

One problem I had when I was on holiday is my wife's house has a number of thick cement walls so the phone goes searching for a cell. The problem being so close to the Cambodia boarder is the phone negotiates a cell in Cambodia, not Thailand, then of course the GPRS connection dies.

I fixed this by changing my network selection from Auto to Manual.

    Hope that is some help.

Can you tell me where I would go in Bangkok that will actually update the firmware on my phone? No help at MBK that is for sure. I use an 6610 w/CA-42 and AIS for email while visiting sometimes. I thought it was 1 Baht a minute on the pre pay SIM card. if there is a better pre-pay option I'd like to know. thx.

  16. I'll be travelling with a some close friends in March. Have been thru Chiang Mai on the bus, but that's about it. This is their first Thailand trip.

They want to stay at the Tamarind for 3 nights then out of town a bit. My idea is to get up in the higher elevations so it will be a tad cooler for them. they like the Lanna Accent http://www.lannaaccent.com/index.html and I'm not sure this will be far enough out of Chiang Mai. Price is not really an issue. keep it within a 2 hour bus ride I suppose.

If anyone has any ideas would appreciate it.
