  1. I think if making English the official second language was to mislead people, it would be to mislead them into thinking English is commonly spoken and understood.

Making a language an Official language neither means it will be taught or indeed taught properly.

In New Zealand, Maori and NZ Sign Language are also official languages, but next to no-one speaks them. The only language compulsorily taught in schools is English.

The best way to get more English taught in Thai schools would be to simplify the whole working Visa process for teachers, and advertise around the world for teachers, even those fresh out of Uni to whom it may be more appealing.

Of course none of this will actually happen without those in charge actually wanting it to happen.

  2. They should also stop forcing left handed students to write with their right hands. This further stunts their development.

The 12 year old daughter of the couple who run the minimart near where I stayed was sitting at the same table as me doing her homework one day, and she'd be colouring and using her rubber with her left hand, but when it came time to write she would slowly use her right hand.

I cannot read or write Thai, but I did spend some time copying sentences in Thai from some Engish-Thai books for a laugh, and I have to say by my third or fourth attempt, my Thai writing was far more neat than hers, after 6 or 7 years in the Thai education system.

Personally I think the first step in advancing Thailand would be to commission an official Anglicisation of the language, so their is just one way to write each word using the English alphabet, not the 3 or 4 or more versions of each word as their currently is.

This may have already been done, but if it has been, I'd venture to say it has been done poorly. If Suvaranaphumi airport is pronounced Suwanaphumi, then spell it Suwanaphumi.

I don't know who the hel_l taught them to pronounce Vs as Ws, but it is bloody annoying.

  3. I have an idea!

Lets get Thailand to import all the unemployed Uni graduates from the Uk/USA/etc for 1 year to go up country and teach English.

Pay them 30k a month and see what happens.

Probably a better result than the pidigin english being taught by Thai/Filipinos at the moment.

That's not a bad idea. Sort of like a Gap year.

And in exchange we could import some Thai girls to teach our women a thing or two about femininity.

  4. Are you trying to say that the bar girls speak better English (& German, & Russian, & Arabic, etc) than the UNI grads?

Seems likely given the daily practice they have in conversational English. Probably the university graduates write better English if it's any consolation.

In my experience, bargirls speak by far the best English. Up there with a girl who has had a farang boyfriend for a year or so.

Thais who just learn it at university are pretty shit, not entirely their fault though. I was helping some with their study, and could seriously find 2 or 3 mistakes on every page of the textbooks from which they were studying.

The material just isn't there for effective learning, half of it being written by other Thais, and the rest being from America where the English language has already been fairly well butchered.

  5. You're never going to have hygenic toilets when people squat down and shoot their diahorrea all over the place and proceed to put their shitty toilet paper in a bin next to the toilet rather than flushing it.

I agree 100%...disgusting how anyone could toss used tissue in the basket.

As I understand, it is a remnant from the times when toilets were all connected to septic tanks and had undersized pipes. Toilet paper then either clogged the pipes or did not degrade properly in the septic tank.

There's nowadays no reason in Thailand's big cities to toss the used tissue in the basket.

It's just GROSS, staying there in the heat the whole day bah.gif

Unfortunately you are incorrect. Although the BMA does have a sewage system, raw sewage makes it way into the Bay on a regular basis. The system cannot handle the waste generated within the BMA. It is better to put the poo wipes in the solid waste receptacle than to dump it into an over burdened system where it may or may not make it to the sewage treatment plant. When people flush their toilets in Bangkok, chances are that the sewer system is leaking all along the way to the facility.

In Patong, after I flush, I often get a giggle when I walk out to the balcony and gaze over to the beach and wonder if the folks frolicing realize that I a little bit of me will soon be joining them. :) I consider it my way of welcoming the junketeers.

Toilet paper is normally broken down within 100 yards of sewer pipe after being flushed. It shouldn't be a problem.

I studied Civil Engineering and I've done water and waste papers, and I have to say the task of upgrading Bangkok's sewerage infrustracture to effeciently serve 12 million people would be an absolutely daunting task.

Better off to just knock the whole place down and start again, but of course that can't happen.

  6. Plenty of good reasons for driving a car. None for smoking.

Only reasons for taking up smoking are youthful stupidity and plain stupidity.

The rest of us are entitled not to have this squalid habit invade our personal space.

I'd love to blow a big puff of Marlboro in your face.

I'm sure walking around Bangkok you'll inhale many worse things in a day than the smooth, rich flavoured smoke of a Marlboro cigarette.

  7. She must have had a very sharp knife. Or did she have to hack at it?

According to common perception the surgeon would not have had too much to hack at.

lol one time a bargirl wanted me to use a condom, so she gave me one. A Thai one. Couldn't even fit it over my bell end! So rode bareback as usual.

I hope you all use protection though, so you don't transmit to them so they don't transmit to me.

  8. lol just last night I was chatting to one of my Thai friends, a 17 year old girl. I was telling her how I start playing cricket again in a couple of weeks, as it's spring here it New Zealand, with Summer starting in December.

Pretty much the first thing she said was.. oh wait I can copy n paste it..

"becarefull your skin will get black "

    hahaha

    God I love Thailand!

  9. Excuse me, but I haven`t any names. Glad you fell for my bait.

Well done having a non aryan child, my children are non white.

He didn't say you named names, he is saying that you are a typical liberal that starts to shout 'racist' as soon as anyone might point out that racial profiling of some individuals in some areas have a basis in statistics.

What is "liberal" about equal rights? We tried apartheid in South Africa and it didn't work. Businesses may have the "right" to refuse service to anyone they want, but this kind of behavior creates all sorts of problems and is ultimately not good for the economy.

What do you mean you tried it and it didn't work? Were you not the strongest country in all of Africa under apartheid? Did all your industries not flourish?

10 more years and South Africa will be no better than her Rhodesian neighbour.

The neighbour of white South Africans fleeing South Africa is testament to the fact it is fast becoming uninhabitable under the current black regime.

But I guess, looking at the way things are for the natives, we'll be able to move back in in about 50 years, once Darwin has his say.

  10. Who in the right mind would want to share a hotel with Africans?

Now i make sure when i check in that no Africans are staying, if the hotel does have a African staying I will just WALK OUT, it's just not worth the HIV risk staying in the same hotel.

Thank God the Thais can stand up to the savages.

THAILAND DOES NOT WANT COCAINE DEALING SCAM AIDS RIDDEN SCUM LIVING HERE

This is my personal choice and I know plenty of higher class farang such as myself who hold the same views.

Although I only stay in 5* hotels I might have to check this Nava hotel out.

And I am suprised a African teacher is on this fred, can i ask do you have to take a AIDS test before you work with thai children?

One would like to think of the HIV risk

I couldn't believe how many Africans there are in Bangkok. I just don't understand why they are allowed in. Thailand never kept them as slaves or had African colonies, they could quite easily just close the border to them.

Some of those African countries have an HIV incidence of over 50%.

All those liberals try and say you have to have sex to get AIDS and that it is difficult to spread, but that is just <deleted>.

If it didn't spread easily, 50% of Africans wouldn't have it.

Not to mention all the homosexuals in the northern and western states of America.

  11. I fail to see how this is a problem.

Many bars do not let them in either, because we don't want to drink with them.

I said to a bargirl once, 'Why do you keep the blacks out?' and she said 'Because if Farang see African man, he not come in'.

    I said 'Yep, you're right'.

All they do is try and sell me cocaine, and try to 'look after me' on Sukhumvit. It gets quite tiring.

Thanks for your post which reminds us that racism is as widespread amongst Westerners as it is amongst Thais.

One night for a laugh as I was walking around the Nana - Asok area, I decided to simply approach every black I saw and ask for cocaine or weed. Every single one was able to give me info, prices, tell me where to go.

The only reason Africans are there is to commit crime. I'm not speaking from prejudice, I am speaking from experience.

    As for the Indians, they're just .. [ 2 words deleted ]

What a loser. A reputation of -31 on TV? People like you should not be allowed in the country.

I had neutral reputation until this thread. But for what it's worth, not everyone had clicked the negative button on my posts.

  12. Well there are some Japanese bars in Chiang Mai that Farangs or any other races are not Allowed in it is "Japanese ONLY" still is unfair.....and I dont agree

Soi Taniya in Silom is full of Jap bars and non-Japs are not allowed in at all. I used to park my car there while at work and 3 times out of 10 would be told I am not alowed on the soi so should turn around. I used to just carry on walking and point to the carpark. funny thing is when the red shirts came and the Japs ran home the girls had no customers for a couple of months and still never let westerners in.

I used to see the girls go of with a Jap looking happy! jeez, has any of you seen a Jap Porno? Fingers shoved up where the sun dont shine and enimas while tied up dont sound like fun to me.:bah: very strange!

anyway, back on topic, I couldnt give a crap about not being welcome in there bars. but I do think its wrong to openly refuse people because of there race.

Some time back I expressed interest in a certain bar worker and was told that she wouldn't be interested as she was a "Jap specialist." As this was a new concept to me, I asked what was special about Japs. The answer was "Little dix, big money." As I couldn't compete in either department, I didn't feel upset even though it was a case of racial discrimination.

It seems all the girls at Thermae are Jap specialists..

  13. I think all Africans and Indians should definately boycott Thailand, because that will definately stick it to those places that refuse to serve them.

    Power to the people!

I quite like your sarky sense of humour. Kiwi? In England, definitely is spelt with "i" instead of "a" though.

Oh mate, that is the one word I am forever misspelling.

  14. Can all the Indian viewers or forum readers talke note of this and help disseminate this to any media that you know in India and elsewhere and also pass this on to all your friends in India or elsewhere. What is needed is more boycotts of Thailand. Regards,

Your avatar is Bizconsultsiam and yet you are asking for boycotts of Thailand? Furthermore, you would take this step over the actions of ONE solitary hotel? I will know who NOT to consult for anything Siam.......

I think all Africans and Indians should definately boycott Thailand, because that will definately stick it to those places that refuse to serve them.

    Power to the people!

  15. And you Yanks should get off your high horse. Weren't you the most recent owners of slaves in the western world?

    Wake up:

The Arab or Middle Eastern slave trade continued into the early 20th century,[116] and by some accounts continues to this day. Slavery in Morocco was outlawed in the 1930s.[117] As recently as the 1950s, Saudi Arabia had an estimated 450,000 slaves, 20% of the population.[118][119] It is estimated that as many as 200,000 black south Sudanese children and women (mostly from the Dinka tribe sold by the Sudanese Arabs of the north) have been taken into slavery in Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War.[120][121] In Mauritania it is estimated that up to 600,000 men, women and children, or 20% of the population, are currently enslaved, many of them used as bonded labor.[122] Slavery in Mauritania was criminalized in August 2007.[123]

    I said Western world.

  16. We all know Thais do not have a problem with discrimination. There is a night club in CNX, that if you are Thai, no cover charge, if you are white, you have to pay 300 baht. Tell me how this is ok? Discrimination is discrimination.

lol I had quite the opposite experience when I first went clubbing. I went with some thai guys n girls the same age with me, and they were all patted down for weapons and ID checked at the entrance, but for me all I got was a big smile and waved on in.

    This was at Ratchada.

  17. How many white hip-hop artists, sing songs/rap about selling crack and other drugs on the streets and pimping vulnerable women as prostitutes, and beating them if they don't earn enough cash? Who also brag about doing drive by shootings and murdering people?

I don't know much about rap, but to be fair, in Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash did talk about shooting a man just to watch him die :P
