  1. I think it is great the grandparents still want to buy things for the kids, very commendable. And if the guy wants to see the children every so often then no problem at all. Be supportive to your girlfriend and show her you are the bigger and better man.

  2. Ur in Thailand. Don't be silly. You know you have no rights. You know this going in..we all do !!

    You are completely wrong.

This type of altitude or perception just leads people not to use the rights they do have.

Agreed, my previous employer closed their operations here in Thailand and tried everything to not pay staff...The labour dept were fantastic and we all received the severance pay that must be paid.... you do have rights here and the officials will help.

  3. Ask her to take you to court, they will make you pay 20% of your salary; so if you earn 50k a month you will need to pay 10,000 a month... No need to worry if she goes to police or any other official, nothing they can do... I pay 15,000 to my ex, not the result of a court ruling but my own doing, it is for my son and I don't want him to want for anything...

  4. From my own personal experience, I had exactly the same situation, I even had penalties for running late etc. All signed and agreed. At the end of the day it means nothing! I ended up going to the lawyer who told me "forget it, walk away, the guy has nothing, you cant get something from nothing, besides as a ferang you dont know who he knows or what his relatives will do if you make a serious problem for him, you wont sleep at night in that property, forget him, move on, dont throw more money and alot of time, get another builder to finish the work.

Yes that is exactly what my friend has also been told by a few people. Such a sad country that does not regulate this industry and even if it did would it do any good?!?!

  5. Is the time frame set out only verbally, or in the contract?

Typical with contractors everywhere. Run low with cash flow, move on to another job for a payment, so workers can be paid. Back and forth, back and forth. Not worth lawyering up if there is a cash flow problem, he'll likely completely disappear.

I'd contact some of the folks who gave "great" references, and ask them to (obliquely) talk to the guy. Face might bring him back to the job site for a short while.

In the meantime, I'd be looking for backup.

I built houses on the side for years, and paid for materials, plus a percentage, upon completion of stages. Never draws against future work.

EDIT: I assumed that at least some of the referrers were Thai. When a Thai recommends someone, they take it very seriously, losing face if the person recommended screws up.

Thanks I will pass on the advice. The time frame, costs etc is set in a signed contract, but my friend does not want to go down the legal road as he does not think it will achieve anything and will only cost him more money. I know he has started looking for another contractor but he is thinking of throwing in the towel. If you know any good reliable people please can you let me know. cheers

  6. Hi all, need some serious advice for this one so please no trolling.

My American friend has bought a town-house through his company here, the house required renovation work totalling almost 1m baht. He was recommended a contractor that provided references etc which all turned out to be legit and they drafted a contract breaking the payments down into milestone deliverables.

He paid the initial first stage payment and work got under way and was completed on time, the second payment was paid and then the trouble started. The contractor said his team had to go finish another job and would be back after one week. The contractor is now not answering calls and it has been 3 weeks.

    What can legally be done?

    Please only give serious advice.

    Thanks

  7. I recently went to the Grand Palace with my Thai girlfriend, the entrance fee for a Thai is ZERO...all others 500 baht. I showed them my work permit (which normally ensures local price) and was told I had to pay 500 baht. My girlfriend asked why and the lady replied "because he is Farang"... My girlfriend argued that I pay my taxes, social security and whatever else and the work permit means I get same price as a Thai.. but the lady replied all farang must pay!!!)... Well this farang did not pay the 500 baht entrance fee and went along the chao praya river and visited beautiful temples which were all free (donation made at each).

I know the government approve of charging different prices for farang tourists, but now it would appear farangs who legally work and pay into the system here also have to pay full price at some places!!!

  8. They actually replied:

    Dear Sir,

We do apologize for the inconvenient situation. For facilities service in MRT, toilets are provided in some MRT stations that have a retail level or Metro Mall available such as
Kamphaeng Phet station, Chatuchak Park station, Phahon Yothin station, Phra Ram 9 station and Sukhumvit station. The toilet service hours are up to the service time of each Metro mall branch (retail level) normally is 09.00 – 21.00 PM only.

For emergency case, you can contact the MRT staff and ask for using the staff’s toilet at the back of house which will take a few minutes to wait for a staff to take you there because it is not in the public area.

    Regards,
    Customer Relations Center
    Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited

  9. The main reason why there are no toilets in stations, is because they're stations.

How much time do people usually spend at stations?

How much time do people spend between entering a station and leaving a station?

Stations arfe just one part of the system.

All I know is in this country where pollution is very high, getting a dodgy tummy can happen instantly and without warning, and it doesn't matter how long you are at the station, if you need to go YOU NEED TO GO!!!!!

  10. I would like to know WHY there are NO TOILETS at any of the MRT stations!!

Today I was with my girlfriend who was DESPERATE to use a toilet, when she asked the guard where the toilet was the guard replied Mai Mee!! This was at the Queen Sirikit Station.

Now, the MRT stations are very big and a lot of money was invested, but I am confused WHY no toilets were installed for the public. I also have a 4 year old son and if he needs to use the toilet he will be forced to pee or worse S**T on the floor! Not good PR for them!

Surely LOGIC suggests when you build a major rail network that will carry millions of people...BUILD SOME F*****G TOILETS!!!!!
