  1.

A young Thai born lad with dual Thai/British nationality wants to join the British Army at the age of 16.

The British Army have requested documentary proof that he is not liable for service in Thailand before they will accept his application.

He has been an active member of the UK Army Cadet Force for more than three years and has achieved rank. Does anyone know if his service in the ACF might be considered as being equivalent to the Ror Dor program ?

It has also been suggested that because he broke a bone in the past that this would make him unsuitable for Thai service on medical grounds.

    Any help much appreciated.

  2. Thanks for the response silverdales, nice to know I'm not going round the twist.

Maybe I'll get flamed for not searching well enough ;)

Your questions seemed valid to me. The problem is when you take time to read the form carefully to make sure you complete it properly it does't make sense. We too will be using the checking service, lets hope they know what they are looking for.

I'm not sure what the troll reference is about either.

Best of luck with your application.

A genuine thanks to all of those helpful people in this forum.

  3. Hi, I'm in the process of completing the SETM form for my wife and stepson, there are a couple of places where it's not really very well written but there is one in particular I would like some clarification on if possible.

Section 3.6 Do you and your partner have any children together ?

This looks like the section where I'd put in my stepsons details ( doesn't appear to be anywhere else on the form for that ) but we didn't have him together so I am a little unsure.

Section 3.9 asks for further information including details of any children under 18 who are living with you in the UK and are British citizens or who have lived here for the last seven years. That would appear to be the right place to put our daughter who we did have together.

So do I put my stepson in 3.6 and or daughter in 3.9 ?

I think that's the way it goes but would like to be sure.

Thanks. I'll be so glad when this is all done and dusted.

  4. Thanks for the responses, I think we'll go down the postal/settlement checking service route, it will save somewhere in the order of £500 anyway. I was just hoping to get it over and done with as soon as possible, I remember the torment of having to wait for the initial visa but we should be a little more relaxed about it this time.

I still can't believe how quickly two years has flown by.

  11. Top post above

Just a question on what you've written below:

Now from this point on you can get Married at any Amphur but if you want your wife to change her name the only place this can be done is at the district office in her home town.

We travelled to her home town on Tuesday afternoon, got married and changed the name on her ID card on the Wednesday.

Changing names on ID cards is a 30 minute job but changing names in passports means a new passport in this world of digital passports and that takes 2 days.

Applied for a new passport due to the name change at 8am on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and collected it the following Monday.

When the gf come's to the UK and we get married on a fiancee visa how do we go about changing her name, getting a new Thai passport in the UK?

    RAZZ

That's tricky because it would mean a trip back to Thailand as the ID Card name change is a pre-requisite to the Passport name change and the only place that can be done is at the district office in her home town.

Then there's the complication/expense of either having to carry around old and new passports with marriage certificate or transferring the visa to the new passport.

Changing her family name isn't required by law and there are many that haven't done so, we just chose to do so.

  12. Hi Alan,

I was in pretty much the same boat as yourself.

    This was our experience.

    Sunday, I arrived in Thailand.

Monday 8am, submitted the Freedom of Affirmation to Marry to the British Embassy.

Monday 9am, went to the IOM to organise the TB test.

Monday 12am, returned the Xray to the IOM.

Monday 2:00pm, received the results (All OK fortunately)

Monday 2:30pm, collected the Freedom of Affirmation to Marry from the British Embassy.

Monday afternoon got the Freedom of Affirmation to Marry translated in the Shopping centre across the road from the Embassy. (Make sure you check the translation, ours was OK but some have had problems)

Many in this forum have mentioned it is worth getting your marriage certificate translated in to English once married, we listened to that advice and used the same translation shop to ensure consistent spelling when going back in the other direction. Also a good idea to get your wifes birth certificate translated too, it really does make things easier when you finally make it back to the UK.

Tuesday 8am, submitted the translated version of the Freedom of Affirmation to Marry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for legalisation.

Tuesday 11am, collected the legalised version of the Freedom of Affirmation to Marry.

Visa applications are accepted up until 3:30pm at VFS, my wife turned up at 9am this Monday morning after having collected her new passport and was seen at 1pm, out by 2:30pm (2 applications, one for her and one for her son).

This might also be of help

There's a fair bit of travelling involved, here's a bit of a guide using mostly BTS where possible.

    Map here >> http://www.bts.co.th.../Route_BTS.html

    British Embassy.

    BTS Ploen Chit

    Map here >> http://www.into-asia...s/ploenchit.php

    IOM

    BTS Sala Deang

    Map Here >> http://www.vfs-uk-th...emkij%20map.pdf

Then off to get Xrays, choice of two hospitals, we used Payathai 2

    BTS Sanam Pao

    Map Here >> http://www.phyathai..../contact/m2.htm

    Ministry of Foreign Affairs

BTS to Mo Chit, use exit 3 or 4, can't quite remember, then you can get a mini van from 25 BHT each to the Ministry or get a taxi, the ride was about 30 mins at the time of day we went.

    VFS Global Bangkok

    BTS Ratchadamri

    Map here >> http://www.vfs-uk-th.../images/map.jpg

I hope that helps, good luck.

Dubar, welcome back as you can see waiting times are nothing like they were in the summer. I hope you get your Christmas wish. Yes I did read about your experience with the agents in regents house, I got some overpriced photocopies from them once but that was it. We didn't supply any translations for my wife and stepsons settlement application and we were successful, however I do believe the current advice is to provide them.

  17. Just to let you know it got refused. I kind of expected it, although she has lived in england 5 years, paid tax for 3 of those, speaks better english than we do etc etc, she would be better off been an asylum seeker who gets granted stay in england even though they are going to recourse to public fund!! Absolutely ludicrous. We are appealing though and my solicitor thinks we should breeze through, so another 4 and a half months to wait probably, but at least i can have another couple of holidays to thailand!!

    Alex (Absolutely Gutted)

Sorry to hear that Alex, all the best for the appeal.

  18. My Stepson successfully applied for a settlement visa to the UK, while travelling with his Mother (My Wife) earlier this year.

We provided a document called a por kor 14 obtained from the local district office which is a sworn statement that my wife has sole responsibility.

My wifes parents also made similar sworn statements to this effect at the local district office.

He was included on the Tabien Bahn for my wifes family so we were able to demonstrate they lived in the same house separate from his natural father.

We obtained a letter from the school he attended that stated my wife paid the bills and was responsible for making decisions with regard to his welfare.

For the duration that my wife (then girlfriend) visited the UK for 6 months on a tourist visa we were able to show continued money transfers back to Thailand for his up keep and a record of regular phone calls back home.

The above worked for us.... Good luck.

  19. Ahh, waiting time over for bigboybennett, thanks for sharing. Good luck for the right result Alex.
