Maybe the Eastern chap thought his Asian counterpart had given him the finger ....which is ,as a recent thread shows ,and regardless of which party is initially to blame , justification for administering a severe beating . Only difference being it was a German taking a hiding ...and the police not being as efficient in apprehending the Asian perpetrators .

If this country only devoted more effort into road safety ,in relation to it's own citizens, then the financial burden on it's public hospitals would diminish much more substantially than any justifiable "insurance" tourist tax .

The report says that he employed 3 Thais ( 2 drivers and a planner) ....it also states that 2 Thais were arrested . Wonder if the lucky one was the" planner" and he'd made arrangements in the event of it all going tits up ??????

Actually , most of the posters here on TV are solely concerned with matters of safety , applied equally to Thai or foreigners . Regrettably , the only time that this issue is ever addressed ( mostly cosmetically at that ) is when there is a perception that it may damage the all importatnt tourist dollar revenue . I don't see you or any Thai groups pressuring the Authorities to improve road safety for Thai people with any conviction .
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. And most of the TV posters seem solely concerned with the impact on tourism above all else.Perhaps the headline "Deadly crash highlights danger to people who take busses" would be more apt.
To my recollection far more Thais were killed than any other group.
Why is the safety of tourists paramount to the safety of people generally? Sort of like saying that an airplane crash highlights the danger faced by people travelling First Class ... the people travelling in "steerage" were unfortunate collateral damage of no account.

Oh come on ....everyone knows that government officials ,off -duty policemen and other such upstanding pillars of society never frequent karaoke bars .Any educated farang KNOWS that you don't drink with or even near Thai males. It was never meant to be. Their egos are far too easily damaged.
And would an 'educated' farang go as far to take this stereotype to, say, Thai professors at a uni? Thai social workers? Thai legals? Of does this stereotype to the 'educated' farang have a limit, you know, for the ''educated' among us?

Well, you CAN claim a refund of airport taxes (less admin fee) if you don't travel , and they offer a full refund sometimes when they 'suspend' a route . However , you fill in the claim forms ..and wait and wait ....then you get asked for your bank details again ...and wait ....until you phone their expensive rate call centre and ...wait until you eventually get so pissed of with it that you just forget it ...which is , of course , what they want you to do !
For travel within Thailand, Airport tax is usually about 350-500 THB depending on the destination; 350 to Bangkok, etc... Hat Yai is higher, Phuket, etc.All depends on the taxes ....79bt is the fare 920 bt is departure tax and other related taxes .Compare prices with Thai or Tiger and these deals are actually incredibly good , but you often need to book well ahead and be flexible .
Trying to get a valid refund from their customer services ,however is a nightmare !
You can't get a refund (maybe - just maybe with a Doctor's letter. But even then subject to their approval). But that's about it. It's a low cost airline. You get cheap prices but don't get all the services you get with a full cost airline. That's how they are able to keep costs down. Besides that is what travel insurance is for. If there is an emergency and you are unable to travel, then you are covered. If you change your mind, the tickets are so cheap you can just toss them.

I love the serious faces of those boys as if to say "what's all the fuss about?". They have yet to reach adolescence!
But they're obviously old enough to ride motorcycles... and without helmets ! TIT

To address a problem , you first have to recognize it as such .....over to the Thai government and ....cue the denials .

Reading through this thread it's like listening to some old ladies nattering over the fence about what's wrong with everyone else in the neighborhood in order to make their pathetic lives seem somehow superior. Of course to some extent that applies to many threads on TV.
I wonder why most farang, no matter how long they live here, can't read a sentence in Thai that any Thai child could?
Even more telling, why are ALL farang fat alcoholics? I know these things are true because if I put my blinkers on and walk along the bars west of 2nd Rd in Pattaya at 10:00 in the morning, all the farangs I see are fat alcoholics who can't read any Thai and therefore it must be true of ALL farangs. Golly now I really feel so much better about myself.
And that would make you the "curtain twitcher " then ... not liking what you hear , but listening all the same !

So , taking into account that there is
A: no "free " medical service available to foreign tourists , it's pay as you go , show your insurance details and/or produce a credit card ,
B: Embassy/consular staff are available to assist most nationalities , who can't immediately meet their treatment costs
...then the rare cases that actually leave Thai state hospitals out of pocket would probably equate to bugger all ....and could be negated by raising airport dep tax by ?baht per person x 25 million . Probably just a few satang I'd wager !

Thai government hospitals are free for Thais not for foreigners. Maybe they should implement a reciprocal policy in the UK so that Thais turning up at a British hospital are required to either pay or show their insurance documents? I wonder how many xenophobic Asian countries are left in the 21st century?
GFP (Great First Post) ...
Australia is considered an Asian country as it's included in many of the Economic Partnerships.
Almost exclusively a person from Thailand, with a Tourist Visa would be paying for their Medical Care in Australia.
.
Indeed ,as with the UK , however possessing or the requirement to purchase medical insurance on arrival is not compulsory - which is actually what's being proposed here .

The health ministry set up the meeting after Thailand's government asked it to address concerns about the financial burden on the country's state hospitals, which are required to provide foreigners with free medical service, Pradit said.
Free medical services for foreigners at state hospitals.... when did that start then?
Emergency medical services are provided and in some cases people with chronic problems have been treated despite being unable to pay.
In just one example:
Jetsada Jongpaiboonpattana, director of the state-run Vachira Phuket Hospital, said the hospital spent about 3 million baht last year on treating foreign tourists for free.
The cost involves medical services for accidents, emergency care and operations, and taking care of dead foreigners whose bodies were left at the hospital.
The hospital has now set up a foundation and accepts donations from patients to help pay for foreign patients who cannot afford medical fees.
This matter comes up every time this topic is brought up. Those of us who actually pay for our treatment end up paying more for those foreigners who are unable to pay hospital charges.
While it may be difficult to enact and enforce, it's certainly a reasonable matter of concern.
An absoulte drop in the ocean.... If the concern is the financial burden on state hospitals , then they should look closer to home and make crash- helmet wearing compulsory , improve driving skills , improve health and safety and a host of other logical measures .!

Could it have something to do with being continually subjected to their stereotyped portrayal in those mindless soap operas ? Not helped by the corrupt antics of supposedly hi-so government and other officials.

It is a known fact that taxi drivers are not the brightest , but to be even more stupid by wearing a Vest with identifying number is running into fully retarded zone.
Had he only thought to turn the vest upside down , the police would still be looking for him !!!

The wife made herself available so why shooting the man?
Regardless, murder is not a reasonable response , but the above poster does make a good point...
The man did not make any vows or promises to the husband... It seems that the one committing adultery in this case was the wife not the other man...
So it seems that his anger may have been misplaced

We were given - milleniums ago - on 2 tablets,in 10 points - prescription for proper moral conduct.
And there are 2 points about somebodys wife - out of 10 - 2 commandments, what do they say?
No idea why you think religion has any place in this story ....irrelevant , in certain other religious cultures , the woman would be persecuted . .This is about anger management , something which , contrary to popular myths , people in LOS are not especially good at .

Would it be correct to summarise then, that a 1 year multiple entry non-o visa ,issued from the Thai Consulate in KL should require proof of bt400 k in a Thai bank account ? Do these funds need to be seasoned for a certain period as per extension based on marriage ,though ?
No, it would not be correct to summarise it this way. It would, for example, be unreasonable to expect that a man living in Italy must have an account with a bank in Thailand when he applies for a multiple-entry non-O visa for the purpose of visiting his wife in Thailand.
I fully agree that it would be unreasonable , the marriage certificate is all that is required (supposedly) at the Thai Consulate in Birmingham UK . I was trying to make sense of previous / original posts concerning applying for the visa in KL . In any case ,a man living in Italy would most likely not be going to KL to get his visa !

Reports say Monday and information on the website has been changed to 400,000 on the 22nd of this month.
It might be your friend was lucky as it is a new rule and he already had one multiple from KL?
