  1. Ive been told by 2 different people that some of these power cuts along the Bangrak/Ghost Road area, as well as some other areas, are planned power cuts by the power company/government, due to the fact that they simply do not have enough electricity for what is being consumed. I thnk there was an article and thread about the lack of power on here back at the turn of the year.

Not sure if this is true or not, but with all the cuts we have had lately, most of them when it hasnt been raining, it would make sense.

Anyone else heard this, or know if there is any truth in it?

I was in Home Pro looking at generators the other day..... .though havent a clue how I would rig one up to my power supply at home, or even just run an entension plug from it..........but I think a generator is becoming essential.

  2. Rent of 200k baht a month for s small shop unit is total madness. How many business running down there can even take enough revenue to cover that, never mind pay staff and other overheads and turn a profit?

Big problem is that there are so many stubborn Thai land/shop/house owners who would rather see their places empty than compromise and charge a more realistic rent.

For example, a friend of mine lives on a small soi near the Lamdin Market. Nice little road with western style 2 up 2 down houses. He pays 8k a month. There are about 22 houses in the street, of which at least 6 are vacant and for rent, and have been a long time. I called 3 of them recently that I know to have been empty for about 12 months now, and asked how much for rent. All wanted between 16-18k a month. Trying to negoiatiate with them was a complete waste of time. They would rather see their property sat empty and get no rent, then lower their prices.

  3. What I would like to see rather than a second airport is a vessel similar in size to the cross channel ferries back in the UK. Get on in BKK and sail either with your car or just as a foot passenger and get off here on Samui. You get to have a party on the way down and much safer than the buses used to get here. :D

The other way is to compulsory purchase the airport from BKK air and open up the market. Surely that would be far cheaper and do less damage to the island than building another airport.

Either of these would be ideal scenarios, but unfortunately I fear that enough pockets are lined in order to make sure that either never happen. :ermm:

  4. CAT CDMA does not work ing BKK, or in the entire province of Phetchaburi (Cha-Am, Hua Hin, etc). It does however work in north east Thailand in and around Isaan, and in particular Buriram.

I pay for mine in advance at the CAT office, for 3 months at a time. Burt you can also have a monthly bill sent to your home and pay at 7-11.

I use the MC760 model. Its not the fastest out there, is a little slow for streaming youtube and other video, for example, but is more that adequate for email, general surfing, online poker, and other general tasks. I bought mine 2nd hand from a member of this forum, but I believe they are 5900 new, and I pay 845 per month for unlimited service.

The one thing that you do get with CAT CMDA is RELIABILITY. In the 2 months I have used mine it has only ever disconnected once, for about 15 seconds, so Im very happy with that.

    Hope that helps.

  5. That pretty much confirms what I have thought since my first year leaving here i.e. Thais are about the worst drivers in the world. DO be VERY careful anytime you drive or ride on any road in Thailand.

I've travelled the world extensively, and never seen drivers as bad as in Thailand.

I suspect that you exaggerate to make a point. I have seen far worse driving in Africa, India and Sri Lanka, but as I was only there for 3/4 weeks at a time, it paled into insignificance compared to all of the gorgeous sights.

However, as I live on Samui - I do see bad driving every hour. The standard here is very bad (but not the worst in the world).

I dont exaggerate one bit. IN MY EXPERIENCE Thais are the worst drivers I have ever seen in the world.

  6. isnt it about time we started a thread, that is pinned, where we can alert each other of helmet/police checks?

This is so funny. It's like a prowler asking for a lookout. No matter what personal thoughts and opinions are, it is the law to wear one, simple. Someone wants to run the gauntlet, up to them.

Rooo I know its the law to wear one, Im quite clear on that. I was merely suggesting that the regular posters on this forum help eachother out by tipping each other off when they see a police/helmet check point. Is that such an absurd suggestion?

Yes, I think it's an absurd suggestion. Again it's a matter of personal choice if you want to break the law. Why should you ask members & use Thaivisa to help you do so?

Who is asking members of the forum tohelp them break the law?

I am merely asking fellow members to help each other avoid paying fines.

Personally I own a helmet. I probably wear it 50% of the time. Maybe it would be nice to get a tip off to help me out in case one day I intend to go somewhere without my helmet.

If you cant see my point then Im wasting my time even talking to you about it.
