This morning they where again "trimming" the trees near to the vollyball court /Night market

photo from yesterday of the few remaining native trees along Jomtien Beach

I'm convinced ( but hope I'm wrong) that they will slowly but surely remove all of them eventually to leave just a very long single row of palm trees :annoyed:

I am afraid that you are correct.  And to make matters worse, as you can see in the above picture, they are putting up stainless steel barriers to prevent people from sitting down.  It all makes me want to vomit.

    Palm trees Palm trees...

The powers that be have a major hard-on for Palm trees...

If they could I bet they would like to cut every tree down in Chonburi and

replace then with a Palm trees.....

Palm trees have very little shade...And are just not all that interesting

    to look at...

If you go to Soi 9 (or near it) and walk south, you will see that in some areas all of the old-growth trees (which have extensive root systems) have been destroyed.  In their place they have planted palm trees (which do not have extensive root systems).  Just a reminder that for decades Jomtien beach had 4-5 rows of gorgeous old-growth trees that provided massive shade and mitigated soil/beach erosion.   If sustainable means meeting our needs without impairing the opportunities of future generations to meet their needs, what they have done is a prime example of unsustainable development.  They apparently want to rid the beach of all of the old-growth trees.  That will cause massive beach erosion.  FUBAR.

  3. When will they stop the insanity?  They butchered over 30 old-growth trees over the past month.  I was going to post pictures but it is just too depressing.  They have no idea how to trim a tree.  By topping the trees (cutting the heads off) and cutting most of the branches off, they are inviting disease and maximizing the probability that branches will grow back in a weakened state, making it more likely (not less) that they will fall off.  Many of the trees are simply being completely uprooted in order to plant palm trees (big mistake if erosion and shade are of any concern, but of course they seem to want to remove all shade and cause an erosion problem).

It looks like PoR is officially done here in Pattaya. They had a posting in FB today stating that their brand has been sold and will be reopened to an outfit in BKK. They also stated that there American Pizza Factory brand is currently for sale as well.

I looked at their facebook page today and cannot find any such message.   I did go there yesterday and it is most definitely closed.

I always try the new places and always seem to end up back at Mike's spending my last 500 Baht. The rush to the unknown "Sai 18" is just another example of people rushing to find even a taco truck here. It remains a shame Taco Bell isn't available.

It really is a shame that Taco Bell is not here.  They are all over Manila, Philippines, so it would not be that hard for them to expand here.  Having eaten at all of the places here (i.e. Pattaya-Jomtien), I would rather eat at Taco Bell.   Most of the existing places refuse to give you free salsa fresca and chips w/ your meal (standard thing to do in the USA).  One only gives you two small tortillas w/ an expensive fajita order (how cheap Charlie is that).  I am sick of rubber meat w/ no real Mexican spices and tasteless sauces, along with overpriced and watered down margaritas.  At least Taco Bell is not pretending to be anything but what it is.   The only decent Mexican food place is La Monita in Bangkok.  I have never seen a tamale place in Jomtien.  Is there such a place?  Where?  I have noticed that the soi dog population has decreased in Jomtien (joking, I hope).

I wonder if Pastrami on Rye will reduce their prices. Cheaper rent, no wait staff..

Drama continues:  I just drove by Pastrami on Rye and they appeared to be open again.  Tables were out front and two customers there.  If anybody has the "truth," please post it.  It does not look closed....at least as of 10 February.

PoR did not reopen this morning as they promised. The farang chef was sitting outside and they plan only to make deliveries from their old location on Jomtien Beach Rd. The Tappraya location restaurant is permanently closed.

I was just about to ask about Pastrami on Rye....drove by it on a bhat bus and it looked like nothing was inside.

Special ASEAN food court stall, Rompho Market, Jomtien

Variety of Asean foods, good flavor, low cost

Rompho Market is at Jomtien 2nd road and Soi 5.

Worth highlighting because they offer foods not usually found at food courts and they do a good job of it as well!

The workers are also super friendly and helpful. Almost a shock to find that here.

What's on the menu? Quite a surprising variety.

    For example,

    Singapore Fried Noodles

    Nasi Goreng plate (Indonesian)

    Sate

    Tom yum noodles

Kao Soi (Burmese influenced Northern thai curry noodle soup)

A quite fancy Gaeng Som (tamarind spicy broth) with large chunks of crispy fish

    Whole fish w/ five flavors

    and much more!

Everything I've had there has been either good or very good.

You can find it this way. Go to KISS restaurant and then walk on that side towards the market area. It's the stall 2nd from the market area on that side with ASEAN flags. An English sign weirdly says KISS but this is nothing to do with KISS restaurant.

Thanks for the tip.  I just had Singapore Noodles and it was very good--nice change from Thai food.  I also saw Singapore Chop Suey (sp.) on the menu.  It is well worth trying.  They also have a broad range of Thai dishes.

are they really building  breakwaters ?

It will help for sure !

I hope not as they are ugly.  What they should do it start planting as many trees as possible; the same trees that they destroyed.   It would also help to have a properly designed water drainage system.   Actually, the first step should be to hire a foreign expert with experience in beach renovation.

Only stupid people who bought a condo on theprasit side at view talay 1 or 2 can hear it I guess ? Anyway who is stupid enough to buy a condo that has a building in front, espcially when the other side of the condo is clear with sea view ?

And maybe only people at lower floors ca hear it, same problem, in my opinion nobody with a brain buys a condo at lower floor in Thailand...

But the winners will be Supalai Mare condo owners, the music will be at their feet and even at higher floors they might sleep with it ! Enjoy your life <3

Actually, sound spreads outward from its source and travels upward.  The people who are most impacted by noise pollution are those living on a high floor.  I live at the top of a condo in Jomtien and can hear all of the noise pollution--the worst being Thais doing Karaoke.  There are signs on the beach that warn people that they can be fined 2000 bhat for loud noise.  The City should do the same in residential areas and put similar signs in front of the offending bars and force the police to start fining the idiots making the noise.   I am confident this will happen at the same time that  "pigs learn to fly."

  11. The trees are not the "wrong trees."  They are, in fact, precisely the right trees because they are perfectly adapted to saline conditions.  They also  prevent erosion and provide much-needed shade.  But, it is important to know how to prune a tree.  If you slice its head off (topping it), you weaken the tree and cause branches to die.  The weakened or dead branches eventually fall to the ground.   If I were doing the pruning, I would only remove dead branches and would never cut its head off.   And I would only do it once every 2-3 years.  It is tragic that this happened.  I hope they do not add to the tragedy by destroying all of the old-growth trees that remain.

  12. Using Google translation, I think I know what happened.  A 70 year old Italian man died from a branch falling from a tree near soi 8.  The city now plans to be even more aggressive in their tree pruning.  Here is a tip to prevent this from happening:  never top trees when pruning.  Topping trees weakens them.  Eventually some branches die and fall off.  All they need to do is to remove any dead branches and leave the healthy ones.

I walked from Na Jomtien to Jomtien and those palm trees take up 1/2 the sidewalk. Also they look the same as the older palms on the sand, that are coconut palms !

So they have also installed a hazard to that long walk

With the speedboat activity there is also more pickup trucks along that beach now. Jomtien is not a dump yet , but its getting ugly.

By the way Global Guy : To compare apples to apples have you ever seen such a - seaside resort messed up - in other South East Asian or Central American countries ??

The beach development projects in both Pattaya and Jomtien were doomed from the outset because they decided to slaughter the old-growth forest.  Most people do not remember that 30 years ago we had huge shade trees (salt-tolerant Asian almond trees and Ironwood trees) on both beaches (very thick in some places........4-5 rows thick).  The trees were beautiful, provided shade  and mitigated beach erosion.  Cutting them down was a horrible mistake.  Now it is hard to find shade; people are forced to cluster around the few trees that are left, and the beach is eroding fast.  In place of a beautiful forests, we are now forced to look at ugly sand-filled bags.  It is beyond belief that they decided to destroy the thing that made both beaches special:  the old-growth forest.

Good morning. I was being polite about the ground beef at Sue's. I'd prefer your Mom's or Taco Bell to any I've tried over here including Sues, Mikes, and Sunrise Tacos(here for a short period, and in Bangkok for a long period). No problem with ground beef.  It's a complete shame and unbelievable Mexican food, simple as it is, can't be served in Thailand.

We do not have any decent "Mexican" food in Pattaya-Jomtien.  Taco Bell would be a hit here.  I would rather eat there than the places mentioned on this thread.   IMHO, La Monita in Bangkok makes good Mexican food in Thailand.  It is way above all the others in terms of quality and authenticity.

Good Grief do i have to roll these 2004 beach walk photos out again

for those that say the beach sidewalk "turned out quite well "

Even Stevie Wonder could see what a disaster this redo is.

Two lower left photos are redo/beach restoration combo.

    all_1.jpg

The upper left photo really is a good depiction of the shade that we once had.  It was nice to walk/jog up and down the promenade in the shade and also have nice places to sit.  It was also, obviously, wider then.  Now, they have reduced the width of the promenade by the width of one traffic lane, removed virtually all of the old-growth trees that were providing shade and preventing soil erosion, and destroyed virtually all places to sit.  The Pattaya/Jomtien beach renovations projects are a disaster.   Virtually all farangs know this, but oddly, many Thais actually like both renovation projects.

  16. The OP said that he thought Jomtien was less noisy than Pattaya.  :)   Jomtien is the worst place I have ever lived in terms of noise pollution.......absolutely horrible at night and difficult to escape.

  17. It is the "we messed up and now have to spend money to fix the problem we caused" program.  It is very simple:  1) too much concrete covering what was once a natural water-capture area, 2) terrible drainage infrastructure, 3) horrible beach promenade design that facilitates erosion, and 4) old-growth tree destruction (the trees were once holding the dirt/sand in place, mitigating erosion).  One of the worst thing they did was to destroy most of the old-growth trees.  That was a FUBAR move.  And they did it twice:  first in Pattaya and second in Jomtien.  Amazing Thailand!

  18. This thread is about smoked BBQ ribs, so I do not want to divert from that specific topic too much, BUT, I did try RMPM's beef brisket and it was good.  No, it is not exactly like Texas beef brisket but that is not Eddie's  fault.  The meat over here simply does not have the fat content (marbling) that you find in beef in the USA, which serves to keep the meat moist.  Still, for those who want beef brisket, I recommend RMPM's.  I really want to try Smokin Joe's (next on my list).  Back on topic:  RMPM does make good ribs w/ several sides, such as macaroni, spinach casserole, beans, potato salad, cole slaw, etc.
