1. To expand your horizons a bit and knowledge of the matter, or to help you properly realize what was happening but really, I am sending you these few lines.

    Here you are.

    - unsourced quoted text removed -

Please provide a link if you're going to include quoted text in your post.

    Thank you.

What makes you think it is quoted text at all?

Because it doesn't match the ESL of all your other 564 posts.

Now then, might we inquire as to its origins and have a link provided please?

    Thank you.

    Buchholz....

Now I've to salute you for a change....

    Done your homework well....

    My admiration....

  2. I have been a renter here for many many years. I like that I have an option of moving whenever I like, and I don't have to give away my money and housing rights to a Thai person. I would suggest that you rent a place you like, and don't throw away your money...

11 years at 5,000 a month is definitely cheaper than owning I believe :)

Same here, I am living in a house that would cost 1 - 1.5 million baht

The rental is 5,000bht a month 60,000bht a year (if I were Thai I could have knocked it down another 1,000 bht)

The most money I can lose is 5,000bht

I have never lost my deposit, I just moved and the last landlord kept 2,000bht back for my outstanding utility bills.

I didn't think he would get enough change to make it worth my while going back.

    TIT

If you buy you will be cheated

If you build you will be cheated

If you rent you will be cheated

Foreigners pay more, but the cheating in rentals takes far less of your money.

For those of you who play the Thai wife property lottery and won, good on you.

Your house didn't fall down, your wife didn't cheat you, nobody opened a Karaoke next door, the exchange rates were favorable, your mooban wasn't abandoned.

But I would estimate for every 1 person who won, another 5 people lost.

In the end even the winners are losers.

You are now stuck with a Thai wife who watches you like a hawk, is 15 years older and a lot less attractive than when you met her!

    :P

If Thailand fails to meet your expectation.... perhaps, Cambodia might offer even more options.... what do you say friend? B)

However, kidding aside.... why felt so bitter and so disappointed in life....?

That surely is not the way to a good life in Thailand.... is it?

Cheers mate.... let bygone be bygone.... and

CHEER UP.... what can we do to cheer you up some....? B)

  3. Sorry to disappoint all you Thai bashers:

"The complaints from London and the bank reported that ATMs in the UK were fitted with devices to record account information to a USB drive.

The USB drive was then brought to Thailand, where the account information was transferred onto blank ATM cards, after which money was withdrawn from the accounts using local ATMs, Maj Gen Panya explained."

    Should read before commenting ...

Why Thailand dude? I am curious to know from these guys. Why not Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines or where else? Is it Because the legal system is to weak? Or Thailand is a heaven for these crooks.

Try Singapore.... ever remember the youngster named Michael Fayes (?)....

he was canned some fierce 18 (?) strokes resulting in dripping blood....

for something much less severe.... such as spraying auto in the parking lot.... if my recall is any good....

For ATM stuff.... ha.... heavens only know.... what the consequences would be for that....

It is part of Thai culture. It is called "Kreng Jai." (We call it a "white lie" in our culture.) The speaker is trying to make you feel better and avoid conflit. Thais consider it being polite. To me, it is one of the most maddening aspects of Thai culture. I first became aware of it many years in the States when I used to visit an Asian bar and sit with one of the Thai hostesses. She asked me if I would like to have dinner with her some time. We scheduled a date, time and place to meet. But she never showed up. She later explained to me that she was just trying to make me happy. She did make me happy; but I soon became very unhappy after waiting 2 hours for her to show up.

    tonydabbs....

Kreng Jai <เกรงใจ > in thai.... never intended to mean per your personal assumption.... white lie....

It never does mean white lie in any shape and form.... never....

The best definition of Kreng Jai is possibly proposed by Dr. Chase in 1977.... to mean....

an excuse not to do something

    e.g. I kreng jai to call you late at night....;

    I kreng jai to tell you the truth....;

    I kreng jai your husband/wife....;

WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THE TRUTH LAST NIGHT, WHEN I SPECIFICALLY ASKED YOU ABOUT IT?

Kreng jai, phee ka....! confound it....!

WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL TO TELL US YESTERDAY.... THAT YOU WON'T BE PRESENTING THIS MORNING....?

Gor.... Kreng jai krub.... didn't want to infuriate you yesterday.... :jap:

  5. looks like thai atm are outdated and have serious security loopholes, if information from the skimmed uk cards is send to thailand.

Yes this sounds like a Thailand's fault ... farangs stealing ATM info from other farangs then using ATMs in Thailand where they got busted.

How are those rose-tinted glasses doing, Nisa? Still working pretty well by the sound of it.

But don't worry - in a couple of years they'll go amazingly clear.

Nothing 'rose tinted' at all, it's not because Thai atms are out of date, this is a huge problem everywhere. Google atm skimmer to find loads of pictures of them

Here's an atm skimmer found in California, and they can get a lot more complex than this

    skim1-2.jpg

They can get your code through a camera or something like this that reads and records what buttons you press

    lmpincapture.jpg

Beach resorts here are probably a good target for these people. Many people will be very drunk and going to atms late at night to get cash out and won't be paying attention if something looks a little weird.

Thx for the pix. They help many to understand how the device actually works....

So we all ought to protect our own cards and money and properties.... so others can not steal anything from us.

  6. A few things.

..... But the catch there is that ONLY those with a university degree, or X-amount of money, would be allowed to vote. Remember Sondi's famous quote, repeated more than once, that the rural poor were too stupid to vote, and therefore shouldn't be allowed to vote....

I read your post with interest....

However, would like you to show the primary source on your following quote....

....Remember Sondi's famous quote, repeated more than once, that the rural poor were too stupid to vote, and therefore shouldn't be allowed to vote....

Many on Thaivisa love to just spit something out as if that were the fact.... and some others equally brilliant person would pick it up and would repeat it again.... as if that were the fact too....

Are you among one of those love to thrash.... without ever considering its validity and reliability....?

Thailand would be a much better place.... really.... and that you can say it again and again.... even with so many of us showing the world what we are really like after a few bottles of beer and what not....

and for those who are contributing in so many different shapes and forms.... in spite of what have been happening in Thailand.... I salute you from the bottom of my heart... :jap: :jap: :jap:

    Cheers....B)

Yes this sounds like a Thailand's fault ... farangs stealing ATM info from other farangs then using ATMs in Thailand where they got busted.

How can so many of us be so very wrong about something so very simple and fundamental....?

It is NOT Thailand's fault.... dear poster and readers....

It is the consumers' freaking fault.... not to exercise due diligent.... over their own personal properties.... when using them in public domain....

We really should look at our own behaviors first.... before trying so easily to blame someone else for our error and mistake....

Hope you get my point....

  8. Forum rules on shortening posts to manageable levels have been carefully explained to you already.

If you can't name a book that's influenced you just say so and that's an end of it.

Meaningless and vague complaints about "ad hominem attacks" are very lame.If you have a specific problem I will do my best to address it.

I vaguely remember.... that he once mentioned.... Milton's Paradise Lost....

would that count at all in his defenseless stage....

Maybe should start looking for the sequel 'Paradise Regained' :)

Ahhh, at last there is a ray of hope for Thaivisa after all....

Another educated soul among many of us mortals who perhaps also read Milton.... ;)

I am quite impressed.... after all these lengthy years in the jungle of Siam.... finally, I 'regain' my confidence in members of TV.... :jap:

  9. I found myself about to offer you the chance to come by and peruse my library and mention some books by author, then realized it would be giving in to your off-topic, ad hominem attacks.

As predicted. He just can't mention even one book, even after I have undertaken not to "follow up" in any way.

As asked before please do not modify my posts :) The rest is still off-topic and a continuation of ad hominem attacks :)

  10. And now that deputy SuThep orders the Police Chief to bring closure to Yellow Rally within two days.... that is by Wednesday, March 16, 2011....

    it remains to be seen....

If the Police fails or refuses to ultimately crash the rally....

deputy SuThep would be viewed by most as hopeless, helpless and therefore should step down....

just like the past two governments they step down when their ultimate order fails to achieve its intended goals and objectives....

Ahhhh, the pot is now thicken by the minutes....

Can hardly wait.... will the Police thrash the yelllow rally to please the boss....?

Dare the police step inside the yellow rally when they know perfectly well that amongst the yellows are military personnel mixing in with the crowd....?

Mind you, the military super tanks are just a stone throw away from the yellow rally site.... B)

Some military personnel mixed in with the rally already stated privately that some of their representatives are among the yellow rally just as observers mainly....

because there are just too many old ladies and children present at the rally.... the police who have been overly extended and overly exhausted....

might just mistaken those defenseless as their fierce enemy.... and might just overstep their duties and responsibilities prescribed by the constitutions.... B)

When it comes to push.... it won't be pretty.... for anyone or anyside.... :ermm:

  11. Ok, the sex slave comment is way off base, I know that, unfortunately many people who have never been to Thailand don't.

It is the classic stereotype of Western journalism. That's why it is repeated so often.

Many Western journalists, especially females, cannot imagine that a Thai woman can have great pleasures with (younger or older) Western men. Because in their meager life at home, there is nothing like a great sex life. Gone already a long time ago, and as we all know, "men are pigs" and how can any self respecting woman enjoy such perverted deeds....

    What....

What.... are you inferring.... that western ladies are not up to the tasks that general men enjoy....?

    Confound it....

I can personally testify.... that you are dead dead wrong....

Which part of the US or other continents are you bred and bought up.... really? ....B)

Your statement is so unfair to our western sisters in general.... I vehemently object, your honor, to such inference.... once and for all.... ;)

  12. Reread twice now, fair enough, it is not very coherent. Pretty angry at the time.

I received the 10,000 baht eventually, it seem to take took longer than usual time. But KTB cash machine did the dynamic currency conversion - basically they bill in the native currency of the card (and for the privilege you pay about 6%). Obviously I did not want this, nor did I explicitly approval this (well since I couldnt read the mumbled up screen I could of technically pressed anything). Other cash machines I used always prompt with choice do you want this DCC at this rate or not, never had this problem in over 100 withdrawls at practically all Thai bank brands.

It looked like the screen malfunctioned, as it was displaying the dynamic currency conversion information at the same time as the thank you screen, the text was mumbled and there was no indicators as to what prompt did what (i.e. decline or accept). . So in a nutshell instead of paying ~205 pound for 10,000 baht I paid 217.90 pound, with KTB profiting a nice tenner out of it.

I wrote to them and they emailed back they will check the records - canned response. Predicting such service, Im guessing the records will show I received 10,000 baht, I accepted the the DCC rate, and all is good - of course thats not the case (I could be jumping the gun a bit) - I've now asked them to meet up locally we'll visit the machine together.

Okay, its not much, but its the principle. If there is a flaw with then that cash machine needs fixing (and my money back for the extra charge).

You need to press on and keep up with it....

until you are satisfied with the outcome.... :)

making sure that all the time your own head is clear and sharp.... they will try to discourage you every opportunity they get.... don't give up.... :)

  13. I say this only because you said your wife applied for or wants to apply for a social security number. I had the same thoughts when I married over here and talked to my Stateside tax consultant about it. Being that I only have two incomes; social security and a pension my tax consultant files a short form for me. In doing so she found that I pay more income tax as filling as married than I do when filling as single. The difference was over $800.00 for me so I have not done anything to register my marriage with the U.S. Government and will continue to file as single as I have no plans of taking my wife to live in the States at all. I have made other arrangements for her to have income after my death.

Such an honorable man.... thinking about another human who have been providing unaccountable amount of comfort for however long....

    I salute you highly....

You are a very rare gem amongst many of the tarnished stones around here.... LOL :)

  14. Just changed my flight to BKK through Korea rather than Narita.

Good idea mate. American Airlines website and the lady at the JAL counter (it was a codeshare) said Narita would be open for my connecting flight to LAX on the 12th, so I went ahead and went instead of risking losing my whole flight, which is what I am sure would happen if I tried to cancel it. I was pretty pissed when I arrived to find my flight now canceled and none of the passengers that were boarding when the quake hit had left by the following morning.

Seeing what many Japanese are going through now puts it in perspective though. Sleeping bags were handed out and 1000's of people were sleeping all over the place. I could see damaged buildings and fires in the distance from the runway. Water was dripping from the ceiling in many places around the airport. Flights were allowed to come in, but none were going out. No trains were running, no wifi. Hotels all full. Felt probably a dozen aftershocks. The Japanese seem to all have an app. on their phones which are linked to an earthquake warning system. They all chirp loudly just before another tremor. Brilliant really, but gives one a few tense seconds not knowing if it's another big one coming or what. The only time I was a little nervous is when someone I was speaking to in the states told me that a nuclear reactor just had a melt down. That freaked me out because I had no idea where this reactor was, and if I was downwind of it.

This was the first time I have had to sleep in an airport. Thankfully many restaurants were open, but many were running out of food since the roads were out or packed with traffic. I was 161st on standby to Dallas/Ft Worth later in the day. Didn't make that of course, so I walked around the town of Narita today. Some earthquake damage visable here and there but looked pretty normal for the most part. I love how clean and organized Japan is. Orchestral music piped into the streets in the tourist areas, courteous drivers, and best of all NO TUK TUKS! :)

Strangely the counter staff at Narita handed out AA phone numbers to call, which I did and got a flight today to JFK. Of course that flight was also late and I missed my connection a second time. I found the right person to kindly complain to and thy gave me a room at the Hilton tonight so I don't have to sleep on the floor a second night, so it's not all bad. I've never been to NY before. Wish I had time to look around. Flight is at 650 to SFO tomorrow. I should have asked to get an afternoon flight. I'll finally be home tomorrow after 84 hours of travel.

    Thx for the accounting.

You should still consider yourself mighty fortunate to be able to get what you call home safely....

My home is only some 3 hours drive from SFO on the other side of the famous Lake Tahoe ridge....

But it strikes me as very odds that NYC is a strange place for you.... :)

  15. You are missing the point, please point out where I asserted that anyone is less intelligent than I?? I am only saying that if you can't communicate with your wife "properly" then in addition to being looked down upon (whether that is an issue or not) then you deserve what you get. How can you know or trust someone you can't communicate with at least at the level of a 12 year old? So when your "wife" turns out to be a liar then don't be surprised and don't come on this forum complaining about it.

In conclusion; don't be so stupid as to MARRY someone you can't communicate with properly :lol:

I can speak, read and write Thai (but choose not to speak Thai in public)

My lady has learnt very good English in less than a year (very bright girl)

    So what.

Relationships between men and women are about SEX, not communication IMHO.

If a man claims it isn't about sex, then I would assume either he is ill (rare), very old (over 70), or making the best of a bad situation where his partner refuses him sex (most common).

In the western world I was with a male group of over 50s discussing if they had found their sex drive diminishing with age, all answered 'no', but they had extremely restricted access to sex, and so had learned to either do without or wack off in the shower a lot.

In Thailand most ladies will do their duty, whether in the mood or not, if not, plenty of 'bars with fairy lights'

Relationships between men and women are about SEX, not communication IMHO....

I am sure there are more able men here who would disagree with you heartily....

And me is one amongst those laughing at your silly and spurious assumption....

Come on.... don't make those pretty girls out there laugh at us too heavily.... B)

Your comment appears to be so very shallow about human relationships....

Really now.... there are much more exciting reasons to have and to maintain a relationship with the opposite sex.... aren't there?

Note, I am not saying sex is not exciting and motivating now.... ok? But it never is the end of everything as you appear to point out here.... hope I am wrong again.... which I often am nowadays.... :D

Surely the types of relationships you are referring to are about sex, I'm not denying that

A healthy marriage however, is partly about sex, but at the very least equally but imho a much larger percentage is about communication. You will not find many who are not "sexpats" agreeing with you, and again don't make assumptions about the types of people who attend this forum as we are not all sex tourists.

I can't believe you are trying to make an argument to justify your behavior, ok, you are here for sex and want not a wife but a sex slave who you are unable to communicate with as an equal. Fine, but don't try to feed me this tripe that is is acceptable or justified in the eyes of the rest of the world because it is not.

She is not your wife, she is a girl you have bought for sex, plain and simple. Discuss this with your mother or ex-wife, see if she takes your side or mine ;)

Kilgore, as I pull myself out of bed this morning after she had a few Smirnoff's last night and insisted I do my Elvis impression at the Karaoke for her friends; I wonder who is the slave.

My God she is an energetic young woman. She has not reached the point in her life where she realizes men are not creatures of boundless strength, durability and stamina.

She eats like a horse and rides me like one. The idea that there might be even a little bit submissive or some form of indentured servant is laughable.

Kilgore, I honestly pay her once a month to go upcountry and see her parents so I can get some rest.

This myth of men coming to Thailand buying a wife to be a sex slave is just that a myth. If any slaves exist in most houses in Thailand it is the men.

Have you ever talked to any farm ladies? "Husband work all day, come home drink whiskey, go sleep. I not happy." How the farm ladies can work all day and re energize themselves after a shower and some som tom is beyond me but they do and they are insatiable.

ha ha ha.... you got that right.... ha ha ha.... lucky you....

there are many who wish to be in your shoes....

Hope those ladies would in their life time come across some men who are able to provide multiplicities til her heart's content....

Tell them.... there are several such able men in the south who could provide multiplicities but most are happily married though.... ;)

  16. do the police selectively decide which groups can or cant demonstrate?'

    am I correct:

if PAD demonstrates, the police try to do something to stop it.

if the red shirts demonstrate, the police do nothing?

is that correct? or am I wrong?

That is pretty much the way it has been appearing so far....

are you trying to make a point of sort....?

  17. 09:45 am, local bkk time....

It is now apparent that the order from the govt and the Thai chief of police to disband and disperse PAD rally....

    has been officially called off....

The policemen thankfully advanced as far as to where the PAD was and had had a brief confrontation with the frontline of the PAD....

did not know what went on during the confrontation....

but the policemen advanced no further.... and refused to advance when ordered to advance further pushing the PAD frontline back a little more....

Am dying to find out.... what when on during the confrontation.... and why the order to push forward was refused.... interesting indeed.... :ermm:

Maybe the police chief would come back with a new selection of policemen who would do his job for him....

  19. ASTV claiming that protesters are being prevented from entering protest site /TAN_Network

They were given advanced warning, that the Red Cross Fair had permits to use that area, and had gotten them well ahead of time. Apparently PAD believes Possession is 9/10 the law.:coffee1:

According to the police record of past years....

Red Cross Fair never ever occupies area used by the PAD....

So what does all that mean....? B)

  20. I've been here for several years and still don't understand why western men enter into marriage with someone they can't communicate with. Oh yeah, I understand that most of the early "communication" is in a universal language, but after a while you have to get out of bed. OK, here's my view -- maybe it's just easier for your wife to tell little short lies than to actually attempt the language to explain what's going on. It's time for you to learn Thai!

    NancyL....

You are so wise.... so wise beyond your year.... :)

I second your motion and thought....

What a pity.... most people want the other party to change.... without thinking or considering that they themselves perhaps need to make the necessary change first....

I always say.... women are generally much smarter than men.... :D

Yes, the poster should by all means.... attempt to learn Thai.... to match wit with her.... ;)

How about you, Nan...? POOD THAI DAI MAI.... Do you speak Thai....? :jap:

tarn kow gun mai.... ?

  21. Well mkawish, maybe you have a problem concentrating, Home issues aren't really conducive to one-liner joke type answers. You were under no obligation to read my post, and if that was too much for you, I am so sorry ...maybe you should stick to Thai comics?

Posts like yours, are the main reason I have avoided posting here, although I have lived here for years/ decades. Why don't you add something of substance here, rather than just some stupid insults??

Posts like this, just make people not want to share valid info here, because there is always some stupid ass who wants to pass on insults. What have you bought, or rented here?

Maybe you are one of the farangs here, who can't put more than 50 baht together on a daily basis, and feel the need to attack those of us who aren't broke whore-mongers?

What assumptions are bothering you? You don't even take the time to explain that. But whatever, thanks for your pointless post. I am sure that really helped the OP.

    amykat dear....

I want to admit... I admire your boldness and your recklessness....

You have been in Thailand for how long.... did you say....?

    What emboldens you to say....

....your Thai woman, or whatever, will probably be getting rich off commission, and not give a dam_n for several reasons ...could be because he/she is too stupid to give a dam_n, shit is what they are used to ...or could be she/he doesn't want to F' up her commission ...even though your Thai partner says she/he agrees with you, that is total BS ...they never think like us, they just say that.

There are many kinds of Thai women, depending on what your social circles are. I feel really sorry for you, if you have not come into contact with any reasonable and respectable and gentle Thai lady. Perhaps, if and when you alter your circle of friends and influences, your life conditions and values would also improve dramatically.

What have you bought, or rented here?

What could I say....? Been in and out of Thailand since 1965.... been selling pieces of raw latex sheet 1 kilo weight, about 5k kilo per week, since 1995... been paying to Thai revenue dept quarterly, since 1996.... been paying signage tax ภาษีป้าย since 1995 <do you ever know what signage tax is?>.... should i go on....? :jap:

Maybe you are one of the farangs here, who can't put more than 50 baht together on a daily basis, and feel the need to attack those of us who aren't broke whore-mongers?

I am truly humbled by your assumption. Thank you.

One piece of advice for you though, you appear to be still in your youth, right? So you are entitled to many more mistakes in your life.

Be assured though, on Thaivisa here, there are many members whose lists of accomplishment in Thailand are much more extensive than mine.... and whose contributions to Thailand are beyond your imagination....

So please be a little more humble and contrite when you want to "shout".... OK?

Hope you have a better life in Thailand.... is my wish for you. :jap:

  22. while this is true, there are a number of slightly worrying observations:

    - During these 3 to 4 days (and up to a week or so) there need to be water cooling as well

    - The fact that they are adding Boron to the water may point to the fact that the reaction is ongoing / maybe the control rods haven't been fully inserted due to warping of the structure by the quake

    - They can't confirm on their instruments that the water they are pumping in is actually raising the level in the reactor. Not sure at this time if it is an instrument failure or something else. I don't think they are willing to go in and have a look...

Indeed, there were reports today the rods in Daichi Reactor No. 3 were uncovered by an amount of two meters... And I asked at the time, how can that be when they've been pumping in sea water all day...

Yet somehow, they're apparently able to tell to what extent the reactor cores are not covered by coolant... It's confusing...

Well.... by our standards.... and mostly guesstimation her--they do not really know, they just want to give some answers to stop most questionings....

it is not like in the west.... you are likely to be fired providing misleading info or figure.... to mislead officials or others....

Just.... do not use their figures to do any serious calculations nor juxtapositions.... in any nuclear related matter....
