  1. I guess now is the time to say that I actually won't be fishing Bungsamran, but TopCats on Koh Samui where I'll be living. I was using Bungsamran as an example since that seems to be a park everyone knows about. Do you guys have any experience with TopCats on Koh Samui? Should a 12000 size spinning reel be good for that park?

At Topcats that should be more than enough, especially spooled with 40lb mono. The lake is not large, and there are no snags at all. Their largest fish that I caught was a 75kg Mekong.

You'll catch a variety of fishes there, especially arapaima, alligator gar, red tails, siamese carp, mekong and the usual sawais.

The guides there are very friendly and good in what they do. The English boss is a little surly and quite friendly if you start a conversation with him.

    Cheers.

  2. I'll be spending a few days fishing in Hatyai again.

I simply like the Thai food, and street food is what I like best, provided it is cooked piping hot. Yes, I ate mostly at streets along Lee Garden Plaza due to lack of info. Will take your advice and explore the Kim Yong market area.

    Cheers.

  3. Thanks, Vont, for the benchmark. At least I know when I am being ripped off. LOL

Street food here seems to be a little more expensive than Bangkok. Generally noodles cost B50 compared with B25 to B30 in Bangkok. Don't know why, but I'm not knocking it.

  4. I'll be spending a few days fishing for the first time at Hua Hin Fishing Lodge next week.

Anyone fished there before? Any tips on bait, swims, etc to improve my catch would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to land an araipaima or two, alligator gars, red tails, siamese carps and maybe a mekong or two.

Size does not matter to me. LOL

I understand the two lakes are rather small, so maybe a large reel is not required.

    Thanks guys.

  5. I understand that they have some chalets in this fishing park. I am planning to stay a few days there next month and would like to make a confirmed booking before I arrive.

    1. Anyone know whether they have a website (in English)?

    2. Whether the owners speak English, if I have to call them to make a booking?

Thanks in advance for the tips, guys.

  6. I had visited Chiangmai and the North quite a few times. This time I am planning to stay a few days in Pai, specifically at the Bueng Pai Farm. I suppose I could get the Farm to pick me up in Pai once I make my way there.

Any advice on transport from Chiangmai to Pai would be appreciated.

  7. The more well known fishing park in Hatyai is Hatyai Fishing Sport, just on the outskirts of town. They have the biggest pla buek and pla sawai in the area. You don't need to go through a guiding company. Just get a tuktuk to take you there, and hire one of the 3 guides (actually 2 boys and one man) and they will mix the fish feed bait and bait your hook for you and unhook any fish you caught. Just give them some tips at the end of the day.

The mekongs there are not big, mostly 15 to 20 kg, but they do have bigger ones up to about 30 kgs. The sawai's are smaller. The guide will advise you where to cast for mekongs, otherwise chances are you'll get a sawai.

Not sure if they are still fully stocked now. I was fishing there late October for one week, and had pretty good catches. Then the whole province was flooded, with Hatyai town drowned under 9 feet of water. I was stuck there for 3 days in the hotel with no electricity, no water and no food.

I would assume some or most of the fishes in that fishing park may have escaped with the waters flooding over the pond.

There are maybe 2 or three other less known fishing parks, mostly for locals, stocking smaller catfish, tilapia, carps, etc. Can be fun on light tackle.

    Tight Lines.
