  3. I always find it amusing when yankeedoodles harp on about food... sort of akin to Eskimos ruminating nanotechnology.

Of course. You Brits are so famous for your heavenly cuisine. giggle.gif

Once upon a time you would have been right. British cuisine was appalling, they were renowned for it. But things have changed and the UK can now boast of some very fine restaurants. But this does not mean that they all have a palate that can distinguish between a haddock and a haggis.

  4. Yes it's low season, most hotels are half price......stayed at " The heart of Pai " before, rooms are simple and no wardrobe, parking yes and within walking distance to walking street...google has all the info...

Yes, I'll second "Heart of Pai" Not sure why they call it a resort but a newish hotel and very clean, stayed there last 4 times I went to Pai, last month they were charging 400 Baht for a fan room and 600 Baht for A/C.

Bear in mind that it is becoming the wet season and the rain does come down a bit, last month I wrote off a brand new truck and mini van, fortunately there were no injuries. Came to a sharp corner and it suddenly started raining, I braked but it was just like being on an ice rink.

  5. Yep, and free lounge access in BKK too!

If you join their frequent flyer programme then you can use all their lounges as well as getting an additional 10 kgs checked in luggage. Also I use the points to get free flights, although you do pay for taxes.

In all ways far superopr to Air Asia.

All though they do cost a little less and some times they go where Bangkok Air does not go.

Given a choice it is Bangkok air hands down. I traveled with Air Asia once several years ago to Bangkok they were located in Swampy at the time. I was in no condition then to walk all over the airport and asked for a wheel chair when I got my ticket. On arrival they informed me it would be a half hour wait.

For some reason I was fortunate enough that it was only a five minute walk to luggage and then a cart to lean on.

Do they cost less? Add on the extra's that Air Asia charge and Bangkok Airways do have some decent promotions, 3 of us are going to Swampy in August and it cost 3,300 Baht, albeit I did book it 2 months ago. That includes up to 90 Kg of checked in luggage and I know that when I check in the luggage in Chiang Mai, I won't pick it up until we arrive in the UK.

Yes, Air Asia are flying from CNX to many places that Bangkok Airways don't and that is the only time I use them. Also they fly to Don Muang now, which to me, is a pain.

  7. I used to ask for a day pass and was no problem, now I just go to the checkout and say "Sorry I've no card"

I tend to use the one on Hang Dong road as it has all the goods I personally need, been to all the other ones in Chiang Mai but prefer the Hang Dong road one.

  8. If you want to rent from Avis/Budget/Hertz then you need a credit card. Plenty other independents will rent to you, but be careful what sort of insurance is REALLY on offer.

Maybe a silly question but i have no experience in Thailand.... I don't have a credit card but i will need to rent a car soon, so do you think this is possible ?

    Certainly not a silly question.

The first time I rented with Budget they did want a 20,000 Baht deposit with a credit card, I presume for verification purpose, now they just ask me for 10,000 Baht deposit. I think this is if you don't return the vehicle full of fuel, which it is when you receive it, they will charge you. Would they take cash instead? No idea!

As for the previous times I've rented with local companies all they ask for is your passport, which I would never give, so then a 5000 Baht cash deposit is fine.

As previous reply, PLEASE CHECK WHAT IS INSURED, Always worth reading the small print. The accident I had would have cost me at least 20,000 Baht and all the hassle with it.

Could you ask a friend to hire the car for you, using their credit card and naming you as the driver?

  9. Did this vehicle have ABS, would ABS have prevented you from skidding into another vehicle?

Sorry, I've no idea if it had ABS or if it would have made a difference if it had or not. The vehicle was a Toyota Vigo 2.5 Litre. It was a newish vehicle with only 6500 km on the clock.

  10. IF it's the "Coloured" Bar then all I can say is that I do frequent the place and have a tab, sometimes I pay on the night, other times I'll pay them next time I'm in. which could be 1-2 weeks later. I make a mental note of how many beers I've had in ANY bar and so therefore when I ask for the bill I already know how much it is.

Never had a discrepancy in this bar or any other I frequent in CM.

The owner is French and is a complete P--head and incapable, certainly later on in the evening, of trying to scam anyone. In fact I've seen the reverse where people have left without paying the bill and he just shrugs his shoulders. He say's it's not worth the hassle of getting the police involved.

  11. You need to fill a form in, attaching the original translation of the birth certificate from Thai to English, you also need your original birth certificate, the full one not the shortened version, copies of your passport and visa.

The best way is to talk to the consulate on the phone, the people I've spoken to were very helpful. The fee is around 6000 Baht which includes postage for the application to go to Bangkok and then onto Hong Kong and the passport returned to your home address.

No idea why other people have said you need to go to Bangkok, it's not true. I wish people would not post answers when they don't know what they're are talking about.

  12. LOL.

Lots of pictures to complain about being illiterate. rolleyes.gif

This is a popular way to extract fines in Pattaya, too. Though just about all signs are also in English there.

They've also started putting the signs up in Russian too. In Pai the signs for no left turn at red are in English, why can't they do that in Chiang Mai?

  13. No problem.

When you check in just tell them you want to be checked in all the way through, they'll issue a sticker that you put somewhere visible and then they'll direct you to the domestic hall in Swampy, after immigration, which is only manned by 2/3 officers but it's very quick.

When you land in Chiang Mai, you'll be directed to International arrivals and pick up your baggage there and then go through customs.

  14. Bollywood was, in my opinion, pretty good but of course no longer there. Has anyone tried the Indian restaurant behind Zoe in Yellow? Any other Indian eatery suggestions?

Bollywood is still there. They moved across the street. Hit or miss... never the same each time.

They did move to the place behind Jack's van but closed down a while ago.
