1. Only good thing coming out of all this is going to be that their dreams will soon turn in nightmares for a lot of people and that is when hopefully they will realized what kind of mistake they made voting for them....

It will be too late. Total power will be solidified. Democracy is DEAD in Thailand, starting today.

    Errr..just how is democracy dead?

The people have spoken havent they? If anything this prooves that democracy DOES work.

I dont like it any more than you, but you cannot claim democracy wasnt done just becuase you dont like the outcome. After all, NOT accepting the voice of the majority of the people would make one a bit of a dictator wouldnt it?

    Sad day indeed for Thailand.

As you can see, democracy just doesn't work unless people have equal access to education and information.

Getting rid of Abhisit and Korn makes no sense.

And yes, by the way, I do feel intellectualy superior to many Thais, not through nationality but through the privilege of a first class education.

Sadly it is a Thai trait to consider today at the expense of tomorrow.

    Fools

Everybody has equal access to education and information nowadays over the internet. They do not have to be from a rich family and getting everything for granted through their background. India is a good example, they learn on the internet. I see many thai girls and boys in internet shops communicating with "whoever", but not learning to improve their missing skills (of course there are exceptions)I always wonder, why so many "girls", sitting in front of a massage saloon doing nothing than scream "massage" at the same time. Why do they not have a book on their knees to learn Englsich, Japanese or Chinese (nowadays better Russian) instead of just screaming in a chorus? What is the reason?? I want to pint out that this does not apply to all.

  2. Taksin almost destroyed the farang nightlife scene- guess you didn't go much.

I *LOVE* nightlife and it's one of the great misconceptions that the social order campaign was targetted specifically at the Farang/tourist scene.

Also, the drive for the social order BS originated from a faction that has long since split off (that nutter chamlong among others), so I'm not too worried.

Please do not mix up your love for nightlife with thai politics, not all thais are working in your preferred establishments.

  3. Thaksin is the least corrupt of these leaders and policians, including the generals.

    He doesn't need the money.

    He's interested in prestige.

Of course, he must by sheer necessity engage in a certain amount of political corruption when you consider who the other players are, and that it's Thailand.

As for paying poor people for votes...how much did Abhissit pay them?

    Nothing...zero...nadda....

.And what did he ever do for them....

    Nothing...zero...nadda.

Thaksin tried, and with some success, delivered for them...health-care...land reform...education reform.... and he deserves every vote.

I hope his sister's government can restart those initiatives.

What does it need to gain prestige other than money. Curious what your answer will be.

  4. I am really interested to see, how exaclty they want to raise the minimum wages to 300 baht all around the country, without bringing thousands of companies and small business owners into bankruptcy.

Do you have any insight how much tax street vendors have to pay per month? Do they employ their sales staff according to the law with social insurance and minimum wages until today.

What is the difference to have a shop in a concrete building and does the minimum wage apply to them? How are they contolled?

  5.

There is no way I will ever put money into Thai assets, because I think it's inevitable that a government will find an excuse one day to seize it in the name of nationalism.
Dodgy people, dodgy institutions, dodgy laws, dodgy governments and politicians = foreigner beware.

Same here! I would never buy land in this country. I've looked into that "nominee" system that lawyers claim is totally legit, but it seem suspect to me. You'd just be setting yourself up for disaster where you could potentially loose everything, unless you have millions of dollars stashed away off-shore somewhere.

Americans can buy land, up to a Rai of land, and have full ownership in their names by virtue of the Amity Treaty.

So the best way is farang marries an amarican farang and moves to Thailand

  6. Does this mean that farangs that own a house in Thailand or I should i say borrow one have start worrying about losing everything and getting deported?

It is still too early to tell and there is point in worrying about what's not even a law yet. More will surface (or not) in the coming months. But if the house is in your Thai Wifes / gf's name there is no reason to worry.

Until she decides to kick you out of the house

  7. Breast are great, guys love them, girls love them, they are to be celebrated and adored in public, in the office, at home and on rooftops. If you are offended by bare breasts in any shape or form weather in public or in private you seriously need to get a life.

Why don't you hang a picture from a 80 year old woman with bare breasts on the wall of your office and enjoy it every day. You might ask your collegues if they feel offended?

  8. And to all those people who write posts that Thailand is tolerant and there are not as many laws and restrictions on personal freedom, and that’s why they are here. Well...I suspect you have more personal freedom with regards to displaying your breasts in public back home than here. Personally I think there are just as many laws here, if not more, but its the liberal application and use of those laws when it suits those who apply them, without much consistency that gives the impression of more freedom. Not a criticism, just my personal freedom to voice my observation...or do I get a two thirds fine for observation...tricky.

    Fully agreed.

Many farangs (not all) do throw plastic bags, bottles, cigarettes and packing paper on the streets everywhere here in Thailand. In their eyes this is "freedom". They do this because they know of the liberal use of laws. This is just pure ignorance and bad behaviour.

In their home country they do not do this and seperate the garbage. Why not give a good example here to a society, still in the process to change their usual behaviour?

  9. I was driving from Phuket to Hua Hin (started at 06:00) over a distance of about 630 Km. No special dense traffic unless at the beginning of the afternoon (13:00 onwards). Accidents more and more as approaching Hua Hin, most of them by driving too closely to each other and not being able to break at short distance anymore (tail-licking).

But the helmets worry me the most. Once out of the cities or the communities: NO ONE CARRIES A HELMET ANYMORE.... Some of them even have them in their small motorbike in front, in case there is control... Can it be more dumb than that?

Generally spoken: no aggressive driving, correct behaviour, safe, slowly (not more than 110 Km/hr)and respectful towards each other. In my opinion a big difference with last year. Or did I take the right moment to drive home? I arrived at 14:00 in Hua Hin at the Hotel or 630 km in 8 hours...

I saw a guy yesterday riding a motorbike one handed. In his other hand, his crash helmet?

    jb1

I guess I saw the same guy, but he had exchanged the helmet against a baby when I saw him

  10. Life will go on. The mafia will have their way, and you can all just continue to paint a rosy picture for us all. That we wish the scumbag taxi drivers' business will dry up due to a cease in ferries to stop over in Phuket... Yeah right.

Sometimes I think we farangs are all talk and no action. At least Thais come out wearing red shirts and burn shit down. All we do is jump on these boards and curse the shit out of the scum of Thailand.

But what do WE actually do about it?

    Nothing.

Life will go on... Tha taxi mafia wins...

I think you are right, the taxi mafia wins.

    The forum is mixed by

    - people living and working here on local salaries, who have a thai partner negotiating the prices for them

    - people living and working here on local salaries, who have no thai partner to negotiate prices (they will learn with the time)

    - tourists coming here for several months with income from a country with higher salaries or pension, for them everything is cheaper

    - tourists coming the first time, who have salaries form their home country, they might not even know the difference what is cheap and expensive here

How can there ever be a honest discussion, if the basic situation of the individual, participating in this forum, is so different. I think "cheap" and "expensive" are terms defined by the individual, based on his/her situation.

Nothing will change here and the taxi mafia wins.

  11. Cruise patrons have paid in advance for transportation and a Tour Package supplied by Thai Vendors.

    Dha, No problem.

If I were on a cruise and wanted to go on a organized tour, it is my business.

If I want to pay the local Tuk Tuk's then I would visit on my own and not buy a package tour.

But sounds like Cruise operators may start avoiding Phuket if the local Government does not stop the tuk tuks from interferring in passengers and their pre paid tours thru thai operators.

Finally somebody understands the difference between paying in advance and expecting the paid service and not buying a package and to be on their own.

    Congratulations!

  12. I don't think the tourists on the ship will care 'bout what they have to pay on top of that... cos' they are for sure quite wealthy ...

but the problem is how many guys will have a 2nd chance to visit Puket again like the Brazilian guy in the story? .....

this might be their 1st and last time to come to Puket ... That was unforgettable welcome ...... Whatta shame for Taxis and TUk Tuks!

I think you misunderstood. Tour operators pre-sell packages and tourists pay in advance outside thailand, there must be a contract between the overseas tour operator and an agent in Thailand, to make sure the service is provided at a certain rate (the rate it was sold for and some profit).

What would you say, if you booked a trip to paris, transfer included, nobody there and you have to pay the transport AGAIN.

Wealthy people do generally not book packages and I doubt if they would be happy with a tuk tuk and all the discussions about the price

  13. Not only Phuket add Kho Samui , Kho Chang any island that is promoted as a tourist destination its transport system is run by the Thai mafia and the Governmnet knows it and doesn't have the balls to do anyhting about it.I have many friends who come to Thailand, they are pre warned and avoid places like Phuket like the plague.

    I agree fully with you.

It seems the tuk tuk operators do not understand how the system works. Tour operators overseas or in any other country in Asia pre-sell packages like: cruise trip, pick up from port, day tour ect.for a certain price. To make sure that it goes smoothly for their customers, they make a contract with a local tour agent to provide these services and they agree on the price in advance, otherwise they cannot sell the packages overseas.

It looks like tour operators from overseas have to make a pre-contract now with every single tuk tuk driver. Will they be sure that their customers get what they paid for, are they insured, who to contact when something goes wrong? How much higher will be the fee? Who takes the costs for telephone call,to reach the driver, when customers are not picked up ??? Nobody seems to think about this.

Somebody will always be out of work, now the drivers of the minivans from local tour operators, who have very low salaries, will have no more tours.

  14. "there is a loophole that allows unlicensed doctors work freely under the supervision of a hospital"

    that is scary.

how many thai (and foreigners coming from far away for the serious conditions) are aware, that they are treated by the butcher?

You are righ, but I think Anuwat should be congratulated.

Quote: "Anuwat said the government should control the quality of hospitals, the price of services rendered and ensure that the latest technology is put to optimum use instead of promoting Thailand as a medical hub, because that would only benefit private hospitals"

    Let's hope this will happen

  15. So it's the foreigner's fault for working without at WP . Somehow I know that this would be the case.:ermm:

Of course it's the foreigner that have to get his documents in order before starting work! Some companies assist in getting the work permit, but it is certainly not their task to get a permit.

The company has to provide the documents for work permit application first. With these documents the employee can get the work permit, with the work permit the employee can get a non-B visa. The question here is if these documents were provided by the employer, if yes, why did they not assist with the paper work, which is all in thai? If not, why did they let him, stay ?

  16. Last Friday, a friend from Singapore and myself were doing some bar hopping. As we decided to go waking up towards Burger King, we were approached by XXX DVD sales boys working all along Silom area, on both sides of the road. They asked my friend if he liked Young Boy and showed him some of the covers and both of use quickly got away. We were then again approached by another man advertising the same thing. We told him, we're not interested.

As we turned around and headed in the opposite direction, toward Pat pong. Some old man asked us, you want young boy or girl to play with.

Just then, Silom was closed off. A whole caravan of police cars, security van's and so on. Right in the middle was a tan colored car with one of the royal family members. My friend and I played out respect to whoever was in the car. The old man, continued to try to pawn off some young boy or girl for sex. I then pointed to the old man, the royal family. He said, who cares, we own this part of town and proceeded to point to the police standing guard.

After that episode, my respect for Thai in that area just went into the gutter. To do such a shameful act in front of a member of the Royal family or even to any royal family is complete disregard in any society. My friend stated the same thing about Thai to; they lack respect and don't deserve respect in any way, shape of form.

So, how can any Thai in that area, doing business in that way which is considered by most to be one of the lowest forms of illigal business, be asked to be respected. Clearly, why didn't they just flip off the car as it went buy, that's the same thing. Clearly, the police on patrol don't care either to enforce a level of morality or standards there.

I'm not quit sure whether you're more pissed off with the old vendor selling child pornography or that he and no doubt many others are doing it regardless of whether the royal family are but a spit away or what?

Inmysights, you choosed your name wisely, it says it all. Elshaheen looks at it from a different angle. Somebody with morals is expressing his/her feelings towards respectless and rude behaviour of people without any level of morality. What is wrong about this??

  17. It is a Thai thing. My wife has always told me that if she "SUSPECTED" that I had even socialised with another woman (No sex) she would cut my little fella off. Thai women can be irrational and knives are the prefered language in a dispute. Upset a Thai lady then it is run for your life.

    you are a wise man

  18. This is really terrible..She should have just kick him out rather than cutting off..

I assume she wants to keep him in order to save face in front of the community, (him, with or without penis) so she could not kick him out (with her action, she made him not available for other women anymore) Cases like this are very common in Thailand and have happened so many times for the same reason. I will never understand why anybody can run "amok" and do soemthing like this.

  19. Mutilation like this always brings out the jokes, but i wonder if the same sort of jokes would be made were a man to disfigure a woman in a similar fashion - slicing off her parts of her breasts or sexual organs? I think the tone might be more outrage than humour.

You are right. Thai men throw acid into the face of their loved woman (so nobody would look at her anymore) and then they agree to take care of her.
