I do...But you said it was "weird"..
Well, are your kids bilingual? I said it was weird the guy implying that his son could point if he went to England. I do have a friend who chose not to speak English with his son, as his wife spoke no English, but he was obviously fluent in Thai.

Who wants to learn Thai?
Doing the people here a better service by teaching them English.
One very big differece, in Thailand, between the top people and the farm workers is their English skills
Ever head of multi-tasking?
I wanted to learn Thai for a multitude of reasons. I would say who wants to remain illiterate? not able to understand signs, read the local news, talk to their neighbours, tell the barber what you want, explain the kind of massage you like, how you like you food, taking your car to the garage, talking to your kids' teachers, talking with monks, everyday normal things.

You could drag her to an English school and solve that problem.
Yeah, it would be foolish for the man to learn the language of the country they live in.

You really believe that people like myself, who accept they cannot hold an in depth conversation in Thai, do not carry enough phrases to get by without constant assistance
When somebody asked my son how he would manage on a visit to England if he did not speak good English he replied........"I can point"
Your son doesn't speak English, and you don't speak fluent Thai? Weird.

it is certainly a good idea, and i would suggest common sense, to learn the language of the country you are living in, but as an indicator of intelligence? i dont think so.
i would say it is. What a nightmare, living in Thailand for years as an illiterate, dragging your poor woman everywhere you go.

Anyone lived here more than 5 mins already knows this. Also anyone living here more than 5 mins knows not to stick their beak into other peoples business.
Dumb idea OP to get yourself and your mrs involved
Live here slightly more than 5 minutes and have loaned money to many people. Learning the language is a must, to know exactly what's going on. Also, don't marry into a peasant family that think all farang are idiots.

nah... you have to make concessions looking at his background. arriving in Thailand 31 years ago with a thousand pounds saving, blowing it within a week and then find a job teaching English and working hard to this very day. all said, nothing to be added.
What's wrong with working hard?

add to that that Villagefarang enjoys my highest respect and admiration. but as you said, two totally different people.
If anyone believes that they are so gullible. We have all read your posts regarding anyone who "goes native" as you say or learns the local language.

And one has world class financial investment experience plus a wealth of engineering knowledge whilst the other appears to not have those things, so what! Two different people, both with something useful and interesting to offer, just because YOU prefer one over the other is no reason to try and degrade the other and force your opinions on others.
I take your point but this is a Thai forum, not an engineering or investment forum.
I believe the POTY is for the whole forum, not just one's knowledge of one sub-forum.

how does it feel being a frustrated poor boy?
A typical one liner reply, unlike Village farang who writes in depth meaningful posts.
I find it rather sad that an pensioner feels wealth is so important. Nothing wrong with being a breadhead but please don't compare your wealth with others when you know nothing of how much they have, in money and other valuable things.

Tutsi? Of course he's a Yank. A well traveled highly cultured, supremely literate Yank. Well, who doesn't like a drink now and then, eh?
Ah. I wasn't criticizing, I'm Scottish, just saying. Literate, mmmm, I don't know about that.

197 posters have voted! Out of many thousand just shows how democratic this contest is.
Are we allowed to campaign against anyone?

Well I guess I'll be glad when it's over but I've had a but of fun with it: Of those high on the leader board, one of them said of me here on ThaiVisa that I was a disgusting person and another said that the dogs leave sh-&i-t at my front gate because dogs are a good judge of character.
Which one? Maybe I'll change my vote.

Good on you transam, you'll easily beat nongkai kid. Colinneil and thaiwrath have already made their votes.
I'd seriously look into them being the same person as they all have similar bashing posts and always like every single one of the others' posts.

In the late 80's I bought strong beer from Foodland in Pat Pong. Could also buy drugs from the Pharmacy in it that were banned in the late 90's. We'd sit outside and have a great time, then once tanked up after 3 or 4 large ones(and it was stronger then than beer Chang, re 8%), we'd walk into the bars and order a bottle of coke, topping it up with out own Sang Thip whisky(kuat baen).

Just spent the last 3 hours shopping online and sending gifts to relative abroad.
There are great websites out there. I'd recommend searching the actual city and finding flowers/gift sites.
As a naturally self-centred person, I love Christmas as it's a great time forget oneself and to think of others.

My mother has been sending packages here for over 30 years and I've never once had to pay customs anything.
She used to send all my kids comics and presents at least every month. Also, birthdays and Xmas.
But, this year she has said it is too expensive to send stuff and is going to stop in the future.

I wasn't sure who to vote for, if anyone, but I've decided you get my vote for being one of the few decent blokes left on this forum. Also, a mutual Scotsman said you were OK :)
