Hello,
I was looking for a condo for around 5,000 - 9000 per month in Phuket. Im not too fussy as long as it has air conditioning but the most important thing is that the condo has broadband access. I want to move for around 2-3 months and if i can get broadband access sorted quickly i might be able to prolong my stay because i can do some freelance web design and earn some money. The only thing is id prefer not to have to wait too long to have the internet access installed because the longer i leave it the less i can earn. Would broadband take long to get installed or does anyone know of condos that have them pre installed. I would be willing to put up with unreliable access as long as its not on a regular basis.
Lastly, i dont want to live cheap but i dont mind drinking local beer in Thai bars to save money and dont mind eating from stalls. With that in mind what do you think i should be prepared to spend per month not including the condo on food and living. I will be living with a thai girl maybe going for a few pints every weekend and maybe the odd time during the week, eating from noodles stalls mostly but from reasonably priced retaurants also and doing any travelling by bus. Other than that i wont be spending a whole lot, just planning to stretch my money out as long as possible while having a good time.
So to summarise my questions:
1) Whats the chances of a condo for around the 4,000 - 7,000?
2) Whats the average rates for electricity for an a/c condo?
3) What can i expect to pay for broadband?
4) What can i expect to pay for living costs for a thai girl and myself per month, based on a quiet lifestyle and she's not high maintenance?
Hope people from Phuket can share their views. I plan to go there in January
1) Air con 4k-7k ?!?!...NO Chance Between 10k and 15k a month
2) 1k plus
3) I would guess about 4k - 6k.
4) It depends what you will be paying this thai girl and if its nothing then I would imagine she will be wanting to live a higher quality of life than she usually does. Bottom line IMHO between 40k and 50k a month.
I use to stay in a nice appartment with air con and phone line for 15k a month but its hard to find places with phone lines. Expect to pay a deposit of about 1 month money and some will try and charge you for water/cable tv.

I really like carpeting and had it put in. Carpeting looks nice, feels nice, absorbs sound, and just overall gives a room a nice ambience compared to hard floors to me. But I have to agree with the sentiments here--I am afraid carpeting is quite unsuitable and would seriously doubt I would do it in the future. The problems are costs 700 baht/sqm ++ for wall to wall, the quality is horrid even if getting very dense stuff (tends to lay over and pull out), the smell is a problem from about day three onwards (not sure what causes it, but they stink), and thorough cleaning costs 80 baht/sqm ++. As someone mentioned, the suction type vacuum cleaners are not suitable for carpet. You must get an expensive model with a beater brush for basic cleaning. While in farangland you can just install a carpet and vacuum it once in a while and you're fine. I am afraid Thailand is hardly the same and I don't even have bugs to contend with. Reading about the issues with wood floors looks like stone of some type might be the ideal.
Thanks for that Coder, I think carpets off the list.

Well as some of you know already. I'm getting married in 3 weeks. Our wedding will be more like a western wedding.ie the missus dad giving a speech, my best man and also me. Since i have never been married before. I dont know what to say. Of course i gotta thank everyone but what else should/shouldn't I say? Any ideas guys? I have some ideas but since alot of my fellow TV members have either been married 1, 2 or even more times. I thought i'd ask for some advice. We will be married in ChiangMai on the 15th October/ Many farang there and also heaps of Thais. I need to get my ass in gear and sort this out. I will present my speech in English and then hopfully in Thai(if i sort my shit out and learn more) So thanks in advance if you have any suggestions.
BTW. I think about 5 minutes is long enough?
Just say this and all will be fine.

Yeah, forget carpet. Not good for people with breathing problems as they harbour billions of dust mites and they stink when left for a seemingly short time out here...must be the humidity getting into them. A nice quality, teak floor would look the ticket if you've got the bread
How much am I looking at for Teak Flooring ? and where would I find it ?
-
Off to Bangkok tomorrow to buy some furniture.
Where would I find big sofa's (modern, over 6 foot long, big and comfy) , coffee tables, 6 ft lamps, rugs etc.
I bought mine from Home Pro in future Park. There's also other places there like Index etc..
Future Park is near the airport !

Carpet is not well suited for this climate. Had it at my last place and hated itas it gets dusty and looks terrible after a while.
I would (and have) wood floors now except inthe kitchen and bathrooms where it is tile.
Have you had any problem with the wood flooring? ie bowing
-
Hi all
I’m really stuck on what to do with the flooring in my house. At the moment I have tiles and granite tiles in the living room.
I hate the tiles but like the granite. My wife likes the tiles but hates the granite, she says it's hard to clean and never looks like it is clean
So now I’m thinking of wooden flooring through out, does anyone have this? Good, bad?
Then I thought carpet, does anybody have carpet? is it to warm?
Some feedback would be really appreciated.

Does anyone know if there has been any damage to the road from Tak to Chiang Mai ?(sorry don't know road number) The road that goes through the mountains.
Do you mean the main four-lane highway that goes from Tak to Lampang (Highway 1 - not really all that mountainous)? Or are you talking about Highway 106, the back two-lane route across some serious mountains between Thoen and Li and then up to Chiang Mai? If Highway 1, I haven't heard anything about problems. It's a main transport route and I'm sure the highways department tries to keep it open.
Cheers ovenman, it sounds like highway 106. Any news on that route ?

Chiangmai 16.30 hrs and just got back home after an adverturous drive to put it mildly. I took a load of shots from the bridge on the Super highway near Lotus through the city to Kampaengdin, south onto the Superhighway and back.
There are fifty shots posted HERE Just click to enlarge...Maejo
