  1. I am thinking of moving to Bnagkok for 6 months. I have no degree so therefore i cant teach english or work anywhere else for that matter. I have a Thai girlfriend so i am going over to see her. I have enough money to support myself for the 6 months. I just want to know will i go mad in Bangkok for 6 months with no work to go to? What can i do to occupy my time?

It depends what sort of person you are whether you will go mad or not. For example I could just sit on my ass for 6 years! :o

Bangkok has many trips, tennis courts, Golf, bowling, cinemas, bars, restaurants, cafe's, zoo's, shopping and loads more. All depends on money to what you can do.

If you can get out of BK for a couple of days theres loads of beaches and things to see. :D

  2. If a UK citizen was to live in Thailand for say 12 months or more with a non imm O visa what do people do about insurance just in case you get run over or have a heart attack or something? I have very briefly looked at backpackers insurance but this is aimed at young people ( and its been a long time since I have been that!). Can you get insurance here in the uk and say you are going on an extended holiday and get cover for various countries or do people do it a different way?

As far I as know 1 year travel insurance will only cover you for 30 days at a time. You could take out health insurance in Thailand ie Bupa, thaihealth etc which can cover you incase of an emergency. They also do life insurance if needed.

    Hope this helps

    :o

  3. can highly recommend royal sun. A bit paeng, but great service and prompt payment. I got a recurring illness one year and they never even blinked an eye lid. They also have a number of options so you can choose the cover that suits you best.

Were they more paeng than Bupa? Do you still have to pay first and claim back?

paeng gwaa, but phenomenally better coverage for the extra you paid, which included 90 days of travel insurance per year, which was important to me at the time :o

As for paying up front, yes for outpatient stuff, no for major stuff, if I recall correctly.

What sort of money are we talking about? Do you find you claim back more than you pay?

    Thanks for the advice

  5. I have just been on the Royal Sun web site but the health insurance section is under construction.

I got a quote for personal Insurance which covers 1 mill Death, 1 mill disability, 500, 000 Assult & 500, 000 motorbike accident (baht) for 2,999 baht.

Seems ok to me but would they ever pay if something happend?

Does anyone have health or life insurance in Thailand?

What sort of money will I be looking at? :o

  6. I have been looking into BUPA too - depending upon the 'options' the quotes that they have given me range from B3X,XXX to B13X,XXX.  This is for my family - wife, our three children and me.

I wonder if anyone here has any connections with some hospital administration - it would be interesting to know which insurance company is most popular with hospitals - ie pays up fastest!

The idea of any of my family being in an accident is unpleasant but the idea that they may be worrying about finding the money to pay the bills if I am not around is much more of a concern.  I hadn't picked up on the fact that BUPA reimburse the policyholder and don't actually pay direct to the hospital.  Does anyone know if only BUPA do this?

    JxP

That quote seems high to me but I haven't got anything else to compare it with. I do think I wouldn't be claiming nowhere near that amount back a year, so would it be worth it?

  7. These are the problems i see, This is somewhat old (6 months) info so someone

correct me if i am wrong.

    1) When you recieve a treatment or go to hospital YOU have to pay them THEN

you ask BUPA to reimburse you.  So if you get in an accident make sure your

carrying a load of cash. Again someone clarify this.

    2) They use pre-exiting conditions to dis-allow many claims. Say you get disease

XXX that takes a few years to develop, they will turn around say "OH so solly

we cannot pay because this was a pre-existing condition".

    3) Motorcycle accidents are only covered 50%, this is probably how most get

    hurt here.

    4) They have one exemption from covering anything caused by bacteria, this

could be another big weapon to kill claims.

    nam

    Thanks Nam

Would you have to show proof of whatever your trying to claim back?

  8. Hi everyone

Iv got a difficult question and I wanted to ask the people who have actually done it.

Im currently in the UK saving to emigrate to Thailand. I want to get an idea of about how much it will cost to actually sustain a life there.

I want to live in the central thailand area where its alot cheaper than the tourist areas.

    I will need...

    1. Land (1 Rye)

    2. House (Family home say..3 bed)

    3. Car/Pickup (family in mind)

    4. Business/income (??????)

I understand this is a very vague question but im looking for ideas on things and prices.

    1. Land (1 Rye)..... You could buy 1 rai out in the sticks, no raod access, water, power 10,000 bhat or 1 rai in the center of a regional city (say chinat) for up to 10 million bhat

    2. House (Family home say..3 bed)..... 3 bedroom concrete anywhere from 500,000 to at a guess 5 million depending on the size, fittings quality ect

    3. Car/Pickup (family in mind) decent 2nd hand pick up (cab) 400,000 BMW X5 about 5 million

    4. Business/income (??????) you could start a small shop, resteraunt ect up contry for as little as 100,000 or buy a large hotel/resort, bussines ect up to say 100 million

so thats a range of just over 1 million bhat to 120 million bhat I recon probably somewhere in between those figs :D:o

Im talking minimal amounts. If I was thinking the higher range I should be playing the lottery more often!

Its how much do I need not would like. I guess you could put a price on Land, House and car but it will come down to business. what business you in random chances?

I mean you could just like cows :D

Your age is ? Are you married to a Thai ?

Im 29 and have a thai wife. Chainat is the area my wife comes from.

  11. Chainat1,

There are several threads relating to your questions, and you should make use of the SEARCH function.  Try Google, to look for property sales.  Try looking at the online editions of various regional newspapers for property ads.

"4. Business/income (??????)" - are we to decide what your expertise is, develop your business plan, and help you get financing?

If I had an area of expertise I wouldn't need to ask the question now would I. Ideas would be fine but if your willing to do me a business plan send it on through! :o

  13. Hi all

I was told in March 05 when I renewed my licence that farrangs can no longer have 5 year licenses. Only one year's can now be issued. Does anybody know if this is true?

    :o

The Bangkok office will issue farangs holding a NonImm visa a 5 year license after the one year license expires.

    I Agree. :D

Does it make a difference if its a 3 month non-immigrant rather than a 1 year non immigrant?

Do you have to be resident in the province where you apply?

  14. Just checked and licence ran out end of May 2548 anyone had experience with overdue renewals??

    Location Nonthaburi

    :o

Iv been told by someone in the know that after your first one year licence you need to apply on time to get your renewed 5 year licence.

However im also told the law has now changed and farangs can only have a one year driving licence now. So it should'nt make any difference when you renew. ( didn't for me)

Dont forget you will need another letter of proof of address again. Try your consulate in BK.

    Hope this helps :D

  15. Hi everybody

I know you've all been asked this question a million times but hopefull you wont mind just once more. :D

Is there any work in Thailand for a CAD Technician? Iv got a building services and Rail background using both Autocad & Microstation for the last 10 years. If anyone knows any contacts or info ie..companies, web sites etc it would really help.

My wife is a Thai national and we have a house in Chainat, where we lived for just over a year but im back in the UK at the moment getting some more funds together. I think im about sorted and will be returning to Thailand soon but iv got a big fear of becoming bored over there.

Im 29 and i can be as lazy as they come so I would really like to find some work over there but I know little about the Bangkok area. I think its either this or play golf and sit on my behind everyday. :o

I hope someones got some ideas
