  1. All civilian laws are not suspended; surely that would be insane

    Haha

I'd have thought martial law just gives the army the right to enforce the existing laws and add new ones as they see fit. Also they said they are working with the police assistance.

I think it's great the military are making the police do a bit more work than previously. Crack the whip. Wish there were more check points out side town to catch the drunks also.

    Go home please.

  2. You can't drive around the city without driving through one of these. They are everywhere. It is absurd.

For those that say the law is the law - ask your fellow countrymen how it is going through an airport in the UK or America now? Everyone is being basically molested because of terrorist concerns by groups that were TRAINED and FUNDED by our own tax payer money.

Follow the rules, follow the rules - while your leaders do not

  3. No, I'm not making bold accusations about a forum sponsor, I'm merely stating why Payap is the best and repeating what has been reported in the Visa board of ThaiVisa.com about students current enrolled in non-university-based schools being placed under increasing scrutiny now when they interact with Immigration.

Also, I've studied Thai as a private student in small group lessons with two other students who were simultaneously enrolled at Payap and Whalen. The guy studying at Payap was there to learn Thai and the other guy studying at Whalen was there to get a Visa and the only way he was learning Thai was in our three-times weekly, three-person semi-private small group lesson.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I was looking very closely at Walden but will now speak with Payap.

    Have a great weekend! :)

  4. I'm a little surprised that Mac Whalen hasn't come along to tout his visa mill, whoops -- Thai language school and others haven't stopped by to talk about similar places like Pro Language, etc.

But, OP, you did ask about BEST language schools. No question about it. If you are serious about learning Thai and want to have the school help you obtain a visa, then the best place in town in Payap.

In the current climate, the visa mills may be under increasing scrutiny from Immigration, but it's a safe bet that no one will question the validity of the course of study at Payap.

Wow, a pretty bold accusation of illegal practices by a forum sponsor.

  5. Thank you everyone so much.

I have learned basic Thai and have learned how to read, but I really need someone to help me match the proper tones.

I completely understand those that choose to ignore the tones - vocab and context mean a lot and can be acceptable.

I am just at a phase in my Thai where I would love to master tones and was wondering if anyone found a great teacher for this specific skill.

Thank you so much to everyone - it has been fantastic to read the different experiences - Thank You ThaiVisa Chiang Mai ;)

  6. Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any successful experiences mastering "Thai Tones" with a teacher in Chiang Mai?

I am just looking for someone to try and master the tones with for 1-2 hrs everyday.

I am not trying to make an advertisement or anything - just wondering if anyone has found a person that has helped them match the tones.

    Thank you!

  7. It was also the US Germany game. It has just finished.

CM Saloon and Sheryles (AKA Holland House) was standing room only on both sides of the street. As soon as the game ended hundreds of people were rushed out of the CM Saloon bar with their drinks that they had purchased in hand.

It was either ditch your new beer or drink it outside.

It is not a new or strange occurrence - its the WC and people are trying to watch the games in English and with a crowd.

  8. It just reveals yet again another element to the out-of-control lawlessness, with respect to compliance with the law, that was allowed to go on under the previous government.

Had they had permits to work and stay in Thailand; there would be no need to flee.

The sky will not fall in after their departure.

The sky won't fall in for you, but it will for them.

The bipolar nature of Thai policies is really harmful to many.

I understand blaming the Westerner for not getting a proper visa, but the process for these workers is very convoluted, confusing, and expensive.

They are just trying to make a few dollars to send home.

Once again the very poor suffer at the hands of the very rich.

  9. Good Afternoon Everyone. Thank you in advance.

Has anyone seen bottles of Patron available recently, and if so, where?

I know Rimping used to sell them last year but I have been to a few locations (near Dukes Riverside and Meechok Market) and did not see any.

    Thank you very much.

  10. I've had this. Best bet is to take teacher aside and politely but firmly inform that you don't want him administering corporal punishment and that it is now against the law in Thailand. It's wrong and you want to pan the teacher, I know, but Thai being Thai, best to keep face loss to a minimum. As stated, if teacher digs heals in and comes up with excuses then take it further, just be prepared to move schools as it's likely the kid will be singled out/downgraded etc. Pathetic, yes, but it happens.

    Response below to the OP:

So the OP is actually prepared to create a negative learning environment for his son for the remainder of the year, including the possibility of moving the child to a new school because this happened one time.

And it happened to how many other students and their parents are reacting how?

    They are not reacting?

And the OP thinks this is the most reasonable course of action?

You are right, OP, I was wrong about you on all counts. I thought you were a mature and rational man.

Lets not all jump on each other and criticize one another. It is a very tough and emotional situation.

We are not condoning child abuse - we are simply saying its best to speak with the teacher in a calm and rational way.

There is no suggestion your son is lying - of course not! As adults, we are able to look at a situation rationally and acknowledge all the actors involved before making a rational decision based on the evidence and testimonies.

Talk to the teacher. He teaches and spends time with your child on a daily basis.

OP: I wish you nothing but the best and its great to have a father that loves his child deeply and is always willing to stand up and protect him. Protecting him also means getting all the facts.

    Best of luck buddy.

  11. I don't believe in kids being bullied by teachers. We had our fair share of it when we were kids in Oz, 50 - 60 years ago.

I'm sure one ear is stretched, the bruises where the blackboard duster got me on the head, the welts on the back of my legs, and once we'd survived this and into high school, they used a bamboo cane on rear end and hands.

The exception was our old Tech. Drawing teacher. When in trouble, we were invited to the front of the class room, and to bring our tee-squares with us.

I don't blame the teachers! If the parents asked about a new bruise, they said 'probably your fault anyway'. YEAH.

Somehow, we survived and I know this is a different era and different traditions in Thailand. whistling.gif

Boys will be boys...listen to the teachers side before placing foot in mouth.

You survived it. I survived it.

    Take a breather, OP.

    +1

Definitely talk to the teacher first before coming to any conclusions. I completely understand your initial reactions and they are very fair, but they are just that - initial reactions.

Take a moment and calmly speak with the teacher and ask what happened. If the teacher can not/ does not have an answer to your liking then request a formal meeting with the teacher and principal. If during the formal meeting you do not get an acceptable resolution - CHANGE SCHOOLS.

All of the rest of the extra stuff will not get you anywhere,

    Coming from direct experience.

  12. My experiences with NAPA date back to 2009-2010 but during this time I did find it to be a very good school for Thai language and culture while still having a small portion of English instruction. The advertised 60/40 (Thai/ English) seemed incorrect as I found it to probably be more like 75/25 but the Thai teachers were very good with a majority having graduated from the very respected CMU Early Childhood Education program. The foreign English teachers were in and out but its hard to expect more from a 30K a month salary.

NAPA seemed ideal if a parent wanted their young child (ages 2-4) to be immersed into Thai language/ culture while still having some basic exposure to the English language. It was also was right next to NIS so parents could move their child over to NIS for kindergarten and beyond. As mentioned in the previous review, the facilities are very good.

  13. I'm sorry, but flashy buzz words mean nothing.

And why should I drive all the way out to a place they have to tell me is hip and trendy, when I live in Nimm. already?

Nimm IS the young hip and trendy hang out. It has restaurants, bars, and shops that hit every range.

I definitely agree that Nimman is a very hip and trendy place to live but with traffic as it is this is definitely nice to have on the NorthEastern part of town

  14. If she gets "strength and peace" by giving a small amount, that is better than letting her go wild at the new Promenada.

Let her give and contribute a small amount if you feel it is necessary, but if it is giving her peace than it is doing its purpose

  15. Didn't that crazy batman shooter in Colorado come through the fire exit door?

At least in Thailand he would have had to buy a ticket and we all know western cheap charlies might change their mind if they have to fork out 100 baht

  16. "After 2 years at the same price no one can complain, well done to you for absorbing the price increase's (sic) on your food purchases over the last 2 years ..."

Have prices really risen over the past two years? Apparently, but what items have gone up, and how much? I don't see any significant differences in prices myself, but I have a friend who complains that the price of kaffir limes has gone up to 4 baht each!

So, according to this OP, two years is a reasonable time after which to up prices. Does that mean that increases will be seen in 2015, 2017 and so on?

By the way, what is the percentage increase going to be on the menu, and are all items going to be more expensive?

You haven't seen an increase in prices in the last 2 years? Where do you shop/ eat/ stay/ buy petrol? I will definitely be going to the same shops as you
