The government here in Udon Thani has been on a quest to remove all vestiges of cycling lanes. The effort has been going on for some time now as the cycling lanes were put in place several years ago have been slowing becoming useless through a total lack of upkeep and deliberate removal. It's apparent that the city is not only unfriendly towards cyclists but also pedestrians as absolutely NOTHING has been done to improve the safety of established "zebra " crossings.

Cops boozing at the police station - would they be sacked like the nurse?
fdimike replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
"They are not even in uniform, what is the problem, Thais having a little party at their work place once a month is nothing new. The problem is that it's inside a police station. No uniforms visible? They do it all the time especially when they go out for lunch. They take off the uniform shirt so local people will not realize they are police. I've seen the same thing by government workers and teachers. -

The entire fiasco is another prime example of non thinking politicians/government. It's a total joke. 555 LOL 555 -
The problems of teaching English here are many. Poorly qualified teachers, students who have little desire to learn the language and no chance of practicing what they've learned.are prime examples. Add to that the extreme differences between Thai and English and some of the poorest teaching materials I've ever seen makes teaching/learning English very difficult at best. The learning situation in most rural schools is absolutely the worst. A close Thai cycling friend of mine once told me the difference between teachers in Thailand vs those in Singapore can be summed up as follows: Singapore only hires the best college graduates as teachers and pays them well while Thailand will hire just about anyone as a teacher and pays them next to nothing.

Another totally half as__ed operation. I'm convinced that little to no thought whatsoever goes into passing these unenforceable laws. Just another "look good" for the international community. Just more "smoke and mirrors" because it's what Thailand does best.

Just the tip of the iceberg for Udon Thani. Safety is a non-existent word in these parts. there are all sorts of exposed electrical wires especially when a meter is removed. Heck no point in removing the wires leading up the pole. There are probably more "electrician" hacks in Udon Thani than light poles. Traffic in the city is another major problem. Speeding, erratic driving, vehicles driving in the wrong direction, illegal U-turns on a red light, red light runners etc etc etc. All because we have no traffic police for all practical purposes. People, to include many of our foreign community just drive however they feel like as there's no penalty for not abiding by traffic rules. A friend of mine asked me to describe the traffic situation here. Two words - disorganized chaos!

I seriously doubt the dog will be "put down" as their Buddhist teachings are certain to get in the way. Thai Vets will not for the most part euthanize any animal from my experience. -
Bangkok’s seasonal floods reveal the problem of short-term thinking

There's always lots and lots of talk but little action by any of 30+ committees because, gosh it's just too much trouble to get off our collective lazy ass! to do anything about the problem. It's so much easier to just back in our aircon offices and relax. -
Will cannabis legalization without regulation come back to burn Thailand?

Let's all remember that this is Thailand, the land of many laws and little to no law enforcement. -

Toby a 3 stage water filter with a UV lamp will certainly remove filth and kill bacteria & virus bugs. -

Water systems in Thailand are low pressure systems which are not safe to drink despite the governments assurances to the contrary. A low pressure system will attempt to suck in any containments via any small break in the line as it travels to your door. The water lines in Thailand travel in the same polluted storm water drain lines alongside most roads. Water systems in developed countries are high pressure and will not absorb contaminants in this manner as the high pressure will force contaminants away from it. They also are not located to storm drains or the like. We use commercially bottled water ie. Nestle, Singha etc for drinking. We also have a 3 stage sink top water filter with a UV lamp which we use for cooking, coffee & washing fresh veggies.
