  1. ^^^ either you have a strange sense of humor or ...

I don't have teacher vocation but sure it makes you feel great making something good with your life. There are way too many schools in Thailand which look like barracks and it is a very good thing those kids can have access to a foreign teacher. Although he can not change these kind of habits, he is making a difference by being there and teaching the young kids.

So many foreigners complain about the number of Thais not being able to speak english, but then this school is a 'tinpot' not good enough to have a foreign teacher according to your standards.

What good is having a 'foreign teacher' if the said 'teacher' is not actually 'teaching' the children right from wrong?

Unless, of course the said 'teacher' isn't a 'teacher' but a white face on the staff list to make the school look good.

Where did I say the school is not good enough to have a foreign 'teacher'?

I understood "Who would want to work at such an institution." as the school not being good enough for you, wasn't that the meaning?

I guess you know pretty well there are so many wrong things here impossible for us to change, but I also agree that they won't change for sure if we don't even try. Personally, I've lost the count on how many times I tried to explain something to grown up Thais, mostly related to environmental issues but also many other areas, and most just don't want to listen and I can see a "<deleted> the farang is talking about" expression in their faces (or maybe "who the hell this farang thinks he is trying to teach me something").

Actually, I agree with your point that the teacher should educate the kids. In this case he should tell them how bad for health is to inhale that nasty smoke and teach them debris is natural and good for the forest. But I also understand his position because he probably tried to fight against those kind of habits before without any success. On the other hand it is also contradicting for the kids to see their local teachers burning the stuff and then the foreigner one telling them that is not good. The best option should be trying to educate the teachers, not the kids (but I think we all would agree on how difficult is that).

  3. Believe this is the relevant paragraph

An alien who performs work that is prescribed by the Royal Decree B.E. 2522 which prohibits alien employment in certain occupations and professions is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to a fine from 2,000 to 100,000 Baht, or both penalties.

I don't believe so. As teaching English is not an area where aliens are prohibited from working. More importantly try searching Thai Visa and finding one instance of an English teacher being prosecuted for not having a work permit.

Don't mistake what I am saying. I think it is a good idea to have a work permit for teaching in Thailand. smile.png

    I think this one:

Section 51 of Alien Working Act 2551

Any alien engaging in the work without permission shall be subject to an imprisonment of not exceeding 5 years or a fine from 2,000 baht to 100,000 baht, or both.

Soutpeel got it wrong but the punishment is the same. As was discussed in usually means jail + deportation but no blacklisting.

fine and jail term as already stated, plus deportation. You can return after being deported but you would have serious trouble to get a work permit.

The law is constructed so that they will fine you, if you agree to paying the fine and pay for your own ticket out of the country for deportation. But in the mean time you will probably spend time in jail.

But there are cases known of teachers who where free the same day after having paid a fine. They do have a criminal record.

Anyway the OP wants to work online for a foreign company not to teach :-P I would guess if I was caught performing a job for a different company than the one I have the WP for, the same punishment would apply. I don't think obtaining a WP for a different job is the solution for the OP.

PS: Maybe this topic should be moved to business or visa subforums

  4. If I were going to work in LOS without a permit, two things are certain. I wouldn't have a bunch of money in LOS nor would I have a bunch of valuable things. I wouldn't have anything I couldn't walk away from because I might suddenly find myself (at best) at the airport, escorted by Thai authorities, buying myself a ticket home with no chance to get my "stuff."

That means a rented, fully furnished apartment, more than one ATM card at more than one US bank, major credit cards, and at best a few things including my computer that I could walk away from. That means encrypted cloud storage, VPN, all of my important data on my laptop being in an encrypted vault on a separate partition on my HDD and duplicated in the cloud, and so forth.

It probably wouldn't happen, but I'd be ready to fly out with just the clothes on my back at any moment, and be refused reentry.

Someone commented not long ago here on TV that after immigration cell + court hearing (not sure if these kinds of cases need to go to court though) if your visa is still valid by then you can have 7 days to take out your stuff before leaving the country.

Anyway you sound a little bit paranoid :P I think the chances of getting caught while working online are slim at best. It's like people telling to use a VPN so authorites can not sniff the connections, I mean look how they block the websites by DNS but still accessible by IP...

  5. To the OP, your list is great and you are correct the jobs for computer experts are not listed, however, do you think a Thai company is going to employ a foreigner for 50,000per month or a Thai for a fraction of the cost.

They might prefer a foreigner if they need very good English skills, or other skills which are rare in Thailand.

Some Filipinos are employed here for business services jobs, with salaries of 50-80K baht per month.

Not sure what's the procedure though.

I work for a Thai company as a programmer. I have worked with several Thai software developers and 90% of them write crappy code that don't even test, the other 10% come late to work (if they come) break every commitment etc and nothing happens because they now they are not above average and boss is not even going to warn them.

To the OP, computer related jobs are not banned for foreigners, the point is you are not going to obtain a wp for a foreign job you will do here and that is technically illegal.

About opening a company, you will need 2 million baht in company assets and employ 4 Thais in order to be issued the wp. Not practical for your case i think.

Edit: BTW there are some Thai companies that will offer to issue a wp for a cut on your monthly income. Its technically legal but not sure if that is going through loopholes

  6. I did read that I could work as a journalist if I can get credentials from a major publication, so I'm working on that.

There a number of fields open to people who aren't Thai nationals and many foreigners here do have work permits.

While that is true, a work permit is issued to grant permission to work in Thailand for a company in a specified address. So, as I understand it, even if he gets a job and a work permit it would be still, strictly speaking, illegal to perform other jobs

  7. My house in central Bangkok had those fixed grill/fences on all windows. I really hate them because you can not look out of the windows if it's not in horizontal view :-P And they are also old and screwed to the wall, it looks like you can kick them out without much effort (besides what is the point of screwing a fence? should be attached with concrete).

I could always copy an idea from my company: Put security camera cases in visible spots without actually having a camera inside LOL (the dark glasses ones, so no one can know if not told ;))

  8. I think barefoot has a right point. However there are also some homeless people (or at least they look like) begging and asking for money.

Not long ago I was walking with my gf in Ratchaprasong and she wanted to give money to a 4-5 years old girl beggar. I told her not to handle money as imo it encourages the parents (or whoever) to bring the girl there everyday instead of sending her to school. We bought the child some cake and drink and she was grateful.

  9. First times it also make difficult for me to pee, but now I am use to it and enjoy. The only issue is peeing 10 times so you end handling 200 bahts in tips lol

They have the same in Cambodia though they do much better massage over there.

  10. My first time doing it and wasn't great in bkk. Went with the gf to the golden mountain (wat saket) and it was extremely crowded. But the worst thing was the big presence of young boys and girls with their $@#& motorcycles being very rude and riding in the middle of the crow. Don't know what's wrong with those youths and what their family teaches them.

Never more in Bangkok, I will travel countryside next year.

  11. Sorry mate, I can't help but I would like to know how you got caught if you can share with us.

i was charged and went to court for possession of 20gs of gunja and fined 5000b together with another traveler, now i have holidayed many times in the kingdom sometimes for a year at a time and have accumulated many things tv, 2 motorbikes regestered in my name etc etc and have a thai girl friend who currently lives in a house i am renting now after these charges i returned to my country for work. recently i applied for a visa which was approved and flew to thailand but when i arrived i was refused entry and told i had been black listed and cannot enter thailand. now just wanting some info from anyone who has had any experience with anything relating to how i may go about returning to thailand or clear my name from abroad the legitimate way

ps dont comment unless you have something relating to the subject this is a very serious matter

    cheers

  12. Thanks for the great replies, guys. I have raised several cats with powder milk and feeding bottle before, the problem is I found this small one very late and all the shops were already closed. I started calling 24h vets and all of them kept telling me the shop was closed (so they could check the kitten but not sell any milk). Finally I found Metta clinic in Lad Phrao 106 and went there.

The cat is just dehydrated probably because she has spent all the day without drinking or eating. Got some goat milk and wet food in syringes which should do for tonight. Hopefully she will feel stronger soon and start eating on her own.

Once more, thanks for the support and the helpful advice ;-)

Edit: BTW I just moved 2 weeks ago to a house because I wanted to have cats same as back home. This girlie came in the right time :)

  13. Around the King birthday (5th December) there are 4 steam locomotive trips. They all go to different places and is quite an experience if you like this trains. 2-3 years ago I took the one going to Nakhon Pathom, I wanted a short ride just for the experience of travelling in one of those machines. To my surprise, when we reached Nakhon Pathom, discovered a tour was included with the train ticket. All the passengers were divided into 4 groups with a colored card in some sort of necklace and were told to take buses and we were brought to some kind of zoo (coupon for food included), a royal palace, market, etc and back to the train back to Hua Lampong station.

The trains are keep in an amazing conservation state, the seats are a bit hard as they are made from wood and there is no aircon but the rotating ceiling fans and open windows :-P I could not speak almost any Thai at that time and I was the only farang who took the train until the Nakhon Pathom station and took the tour there, it was a little bit confusing but the guide and the elderly Thai people took good care of me (I would say all the people were Thai families)

Just be sure to book it in advance if you are interested because all the seats are booked very fast. When I booked mine I need to chose that trip because the other one I was interested in was already fully booked. Also, be on time to the station because the trains leave sharp on schedule (I was about 5 minutes late and the train already departed and I needed to take a motosai to follow the train and catch it in the next station, it was quite funny :-P)

If you like those trains you shouldn't miss it, I will repeat this year too ;-) I think seat61 web has more information on this yearly trips.

EDIT: 2-3 years ago the trips were from the 3rd to the 6th, one train to a different destination each day

  14. Sorry for stealing the post ;-P

I just moved to a townhouse and the pressure is so low both in the ground level and first floor that I am using the tub/bucket combination to take showers lol

Can you guys recommend a not too expensive pump which I will probably inline without a tank since I don't want to carry the tank when I eventually move out?

I plan to install a water heater and washing machine. I read someone said the low pressure affects the heater, will it affect the washing machine as well?

Edit: just discovered it's illegal to pump from the line so I will need to purchase a water tank as well. Can anyone point me where to look and what price range to expect? Thanks!
