  1. It sounds like there were some payoffs some where other than bail for this guy to be released.  If Thialand really wants to be part of the free world they better start to shape up a little more.

I am afraid those of us who have seen Thai justice, or 'just us' up close are not surprised. Disappointed, disgusted, revolted, yes, surprised, no. Thai police and officials have a sense of entitilement that they are above what the rest of population must face. The only thing that effects Thai thinking is 'face' and money. Until Western Gov'ts. Britain in particular, make it very well known that this type of behavoir will have financial repercussions and trade restrictions, not much will change.

  2. TAT unveils new tourism plans for Pattaya

CHONBURI: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) today unveiled new tourism plans for the well-known resort of Pattaya, turning its proximity to the new Suvarnabhumi Airport into its main selling point, while preparing for the establishment of a special call centre for Pattaya tourist information.

Mr. Niti Khongkrut, Director of the TAT's Central Region Office, Region 3, said that the plans for the 2005 fiscal year had been drawn up in conjunction with local tourism organizations.

Expressing pleasure that the Pattaya authorities had approved a Bt10 million publicity budget for the TAT's Pattaya office to spend on publicity, he said that this amount would be matched by the same sum from the TAT itself.

As far as foreign publicity is concerned, the TAT will concentrate on the Asian market, especially China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, with publicity conducted via television, newspapers, billboards and advertising on buses and trains.

The focus of the campaign will be on the convenience of travel to Pattaya, with a mere one-hour journey time between Pattaya and Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport, due to open in September next year.

On the domestic front, the TAT will turn to visitors from Bangkok, both independent tourists and conference guests.

Mr. Niti also revealed that the TAT was establishing a tourist information call centre for Pattaya, with visitors being able to gain tourist information by dialling 1555.

    -- TNA 2004-10-14

The only upside I see is shorter travel time to Pattaya when arriving from your home country. The massive downside is that even more tourists will descend on Pattaya. The infrastructure is not coping with number of tourists now, what will it be like when the numbers double or triple? Pattaya is in for some serious growing pains in the next few years.

  3. The only valid reason for this kind of treatment I can think of is if the guy was a child molester, in which case it is understandable and arguably can be defended.

It is too strong a punishment for anything else. Just as bad as those cases of jealous men who throw acid over their wife in revenge.  :o

This is getting way too common in Thailand.

We are not living in the Middle Ages or Saudi Arabia. From what I have read, being attracted to children is the same as being gay. It is not a choice. You are either sexually attracted to children or you are not. They can't turn their preferences off any more than a hetersexual can. They can choose not to act on those desires. Pedophiles deserve prison time for molesting a child, but not castration.

  4. I think it's a lot difficult for me to get a green card in US than for you as a farang to get a work permit in Thailand for teaching position.

    [/quote

A US green card allows you to reside as a legal resident in the US for the rest of your life. I don't think a Thai work permit is going to allow me to reside in Thailand forever and confer resident status on me. Your analogy is a poor one. :o

  5. Are we going to get banned for flaming ladyboys from this news clip?

That's up to the admin guys, but in a Buddhist country with a 'live and let live' attitude, we should be able tolerate all fellow humans. Ladyboys are trying to cope with this world the same as you and I do. It must be difficult to find yourself in the wrong body and make a difficult decision on a limited budget. I wish them well and hope they find peace and happiness. :o

  6. They let sh!ts like this live in Thailand but an English teacher mindng his own business has to leave every three months for a new visa. Money is #1.

I suspect this yob and his mates do the 'border bounce' as well. Hopefully now that he and his fellow football hooligans are getting press coverage, Thai Imm. will blacklist them from the country. Pattaya has enough image problems without allowing known criminals to reside there.

  7. What the <deleted> was he doing putting his hand in the elephants mouth?

Feed them via the trunk, thats what its for

I think the key phrase in this article is 'had about 10 beers'. Let's face it, common sense and clear thinking are gone after 10 beers. Perhaps this fool has learned a lesson, but I doubt it. Heavy drinkers generally keep repeating past behavior until Darwin's law takes them out of the gene pool. :o

  8. I'm not surprised that this occurs because I see so many children operating motorbikes on busy Bangkok streets.  Children are not old enough to legally obtain a license, so why should they operate a motorbike unsupervised?  A motorbike is a motorized vehicle with an even higher mortality rate than cars, so I fail to understand the widespread acceptance of children even on motorbikes.

I all comes down to police enforcement, or lack of. In Pattaya you see underage moto drivers everyday. Why? Because the police do not stop them and impound the motorbike. Until the traffic police enforce the laws consistantly, Thais and farangs alike will ignore them. What percentage of motorbike riders have a valid drivers license; current tax sticker; legal license plate; insurance and a proper helmet buckled on? Very few would be be the winning answer. Right across the border in Malaysia traffic laws are enforced much more consistantly. I do not have the figures, but I would bet Malaysia has far fewer fatalites per miles driven than Thailand. I am not holding my breath until the Thai traffic police start enforcing existing laws. :o

  9. I hope they don't let them loose again..............

Pattaya has too many strays as well as BKK. Even on Walking Street and Soi 8-9 tourist zones there are strays living on the streets. Most are so mangy that nobody wants to touch or get near them. There is an effort to capture, then spay/neuter them, but there is never enough money to be really effective. The problem will remain until enough visitors are bitten to force the authorities to take action. I do not look for this to happen anytime soon. :o

  10. This man should be chopped up alive, slowly...over the course of months, and then thrown to the crocodiles.....preferably hungry ones.

I agree that this guy is reprehesible and deserves to be punished by the laws that apply. But to call for the death penalty and torture without trial goes right back the middle ages.

  11. Those black man really make their race shameful.

But believe or not  they are some stupid people who  believe in them.

It still surprises me that anyone would listen to men from Ghana and fall for these scams. But, it only proves P.T. Barnum's famous quote, "There is a sucker born every minute". As long as we have greed and stupidity, people will continue to be conned out of their money. :o

  12. Ghanaian Arrested in Thailand

African pair held for cheating British man

BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested two African men in a counterfeiting gang for cheating a British man out of $130,000.

Bessibe Armstrong, 25, from Cameroon, and Stephen Bandu, 32, from Ghana, were arrested at the Sukhumvit Crown hotel in Klong Toey late on Tuesday night.

The two allegedly lured Jahanzeeb Khan, 32, a British businessman, to give them money to buy chemicals and equipment to ``wash'' specially printed US dollar bank notes covered in black ink.

They told Mr Khan the money had been originally intended to be sent to the Ivory Coast. However, they were actually not dollar notes at all but just blank pieces of paper soaked in black ink.

Mr Khan said he gave the two men the cash and had an appointment to pick up the washed bank notes at the Grand President hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11. He went there but the two men did not have the money as promised.

When police arrived at their room to arrest the two, they found two other men from Cameroon, Emmanuel Akwe, 34, and Landry Astrong Alain, 26. The two were also arrested and charged with illegal entry as there were no entry stamps in their passports.

    --Bangkok Post 2004-10-08

:o This almost defies belief. Why would a successful businessman trust two men from Ghana? The phrase 'a fool and their money is soon parted' comes to mind. :D

  13. Run like the wind boy and don't look back.

This lad has a very difficult phase of his life coming up. I am guessing he does not have a passport, money or change of clothes. Unless he has very good friends that can help him get out of the country and to a Canadian embassy, his future looks very bleak. I am rooting for him to get out of the LOS upright.

  14. At least he knows his rights, but something tells me I should have no sympathy for him.

The harsh sentences for drug smuggling has gone beyond punishment into revenge. They are confining prisonors longer for drugs than for violent crime against other citizens. This guy has already spent 10 years in prison for a stupid mistake that harmed no one. Deport him to OZ and free up some space for criminals that murder, maim and rob others.

  15. Why not legalise all drugs? In the end we all started the same with mother's milk and later on somewhere down the road a minority of people became drug addicts for whatever reason.

I don't think by legalising drugs suddenly the whole planet will get stoned or coke-crazed same as not everybody becomes a smoker or alcoholic.

This has been suggested before in the US and other countries. The problem is that too many people have a vested interest in continuing the status quo. Literally billions of dollars are used to fight 'the war on drugs' every year. The only permanent solution is for the gov't to take over the supply of drugs and sell them for cost. You have to take the profit motive out of drugs; the producing, transporting, distributing and selling of them in order to change the present situation. I do not think we are going to see any country legalize drugs anytime soon. :o

  16. i will hazard a guess & predict that the majority of voters select the thai bird... even though they secretly would prefer a farang beauty...

the problem is that most members here just couldn't attract a beautiful farang lady unless they had won the lottery...  :D  so they make do with a tg, who can be bought cheaply & isn't fussy about looks...

Harry Palmer hit the nail sqarely on the head. There is no way most males could attract the top farang beauties. We are either too old, too out of shape, not very good looking or not enough in the bank account. That is just the way the world works. Why should a beautiful farang woman settle for an average man? Short answer; she won't. Due to economic differences, an average to worse than average male can have a beautiful lady here in Thailand and other Asian countries. That is why there are many more men tourists to Thailand than women. This also why you see many older fat farangs going down the street with a Thai lady young enough to be his daughter. :o

  17. There are many farang suicides in Thailand and it's true what we have all at some point heard, that Thailand can completely mess you up and destroy you if you are not careful.

But WHY are some people daft enough to come over on a one way ticket if they are not in very well paid work, and WHY do so many resort to alcoholism and suicide???

I know from experience that life here can be emotional at times, more so it seems than back in our homeland, and although I've had moments of hopeless bleak despair, I have never considered suicide, but there's no guarantee that I never would at some point in life - it could happen to anybody and it does, but why so much?

My own personal theory is that there is no help for them here when they hit the skids.

In Thailand (to my knowledge - correct me if I'm wrong) there is no counselling for farangs, no therapy or psychiatrists who we can turn to when everything has gone tits up and no Samaritans Hotline.

If I am right and there isn't any of the above, then isn't it about time there was?

Thailand gets the dregs from many countries, esp. Pattaya. My friends and I use the term "Euro Trash' but that is being unfair to Europe. The Americans and guys from OZ quailfy as well. Pattaya just does not get many 'normal' tourists or long stay ex-pats. Some that come to stay do have a seedy past and are running from something. When the money runs out, some decide suicide in Thailand is better than deportation, jail or whatever else awaits them back home. I personally know 3 guys that have killed themselves in Pattaya in the last 5 years. When you combine alcohol or drugs with being broke, people make fatal decisions. Here in Pattaya there are several clubs that can and will help. The Ex-Pat Club has a member that will visit members in jail, hopsital and will get you help when contemplating suicide. The motto is ex-pats helping ex-pats. I know the Brits, Germans, Norwegians, etc have clubs as well. Help may not be as readily avaiable as in Western cities, but there is help if one seeks it, at least in Pattaya. :o

  18. He should never have scaled down the first one!

    I agree Rod.

kill them all and let god sort them out!

The Thai police get away with murder now, they don't need any more encouragement from top officials. The rights and safety of farangs are precarious enough without trigger happy police given the green light. This would be a good time to keep a very low profile. :o

  19. Getting from the airport to Pattaya is always a hassle unless you are happy to pay 2000 baht.

There is supposed to be a direct bus from the Domestic Terminal about every three hours.

Does anyone know the times, its number or the company running it?

    Thanks

    finewine

Thai Airway run a minibus or bus at 9:00am, 12:00pm, 7:00pm, to Pattaya depending on how many want to go. 200bt. Very easy; book at the desk before exiting the airport. The driver will offer to drop you at your hotel for another 30-50bt. Worth it as a baht bus or moto would charge about the same from the 3rd office.

  20. I have also have taken the Thai Airways mini bus on occasions (Bt 200) which goes via the motorway and gets you there in about an hour and half but they chuck you off at their office in 3rd Rd Pat so you will then prob.need a Song-Thao or motorbike @about 20-30 Bt.to your digs.

The last 3 times I took the Thai Airways bus to Pattaya the driver had his own little fiddle. He finds out where you are staying and offers to drop you off for the same fare as a charter baht bus would charge, usually 30-50bt. I am happy to pay him, stay on an air con bus, only handle the luggage once at your hotel. A win-win deal for both of us. :o

  21. 3 coaches per day from the airport at the thai limo desk u can get the ticket, they leave 9am /12am /7pm

    ..

Being a 'cheap charlie' I take the 9:00am Thai Airway bus for 200bt, but once I was not allowed on as it was full and they would not get a larger bus. :D I took the A3 to Ekamai, 100bt, then the regular bus to Pattaya. Same price but just a little more hassle; get off A3, walk 50 meters, take next bus to Pattaya. 40bt and the share baht bus will drop you off or take a moto direct to the hotel. Simple and I am 1000bt ahead of the taxi-limo guys.:o

  22. the newspapers today were all to happy to report that  a bus going from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in the US crashed injuring 17 Thais.

But look at the differences:  the bus was in a rainstorm and lost control.  It slipped off the road and fell SEVEN meters into a ditch and fell over onto its side.  No one was killed or seriously injured (life threatening).  At least the story didn't mention that.

so this bus driver had at least some skill in driving.  he probably wasn't speeding to begin with.  And he was able to control the bus enough to control its speed enough to prevent it from flipping over exessively and killing passengers.

The bus had 19 Taiwanese, not Thais. Part of the problem for the police was that nobody spoke enough English to find out where they boarded the bus and where they were going. Eventually it was learned that they were from the LA area and going to Las Vegas for the day. The crash happened during a rainstorm on a steep downhill section of I-15. The police have ruled it driver error, going too fast for the conditions. After my first trip to the LOS, I decided to get on the biggest vehicle on that route. I took a minibus from Hat Yai to Phuket and another from BKK to Pattaya. Never again, I vowed. The Thais drive like lunatics and have no regard for their safety or their passengers. I wanted as much metal around me as possible. I gave up riding the minibus if a full sized bus was also going that route. This article of an air con bus crash is really disturbing. What to do now? We all know motorbike, private cars, baht bus, minibus are all more dangerous than a full size bus. I guess I get on the air con bus and pray the driver wants to live at least one more day. :o
