A second concern is that I am having difficulty finding a way to feel like I am making a contribution.  As a result, I have a sense of meaninglessness.

I have seen many of the ex-pats in Pattaya fall into this same malaise. They end up drinking too much, butterfly the ladies and just drift along. They go from golf course to the bar, pretending they are having fun. It just gets boring and meaningless after a period of time. At least in Pattaya there are many organizations that can use volunteers. Perhaps you could find a cause or group that needs your expertise or support. Helping others less fortunate than yourself is a sure way to give meaning to your days. Good luck with your retirement.

How interesting. A non American advising Americans how to vote. Do you really think your post is going to sway even one voter to change their mind? I guess you feel better for venting, but all it does is prove that we have the right to free speech. Each country picks their own leaders; except of course in the the dictatorships where free elections are not held, free speech and a free press are not tolerated. Happily for both of us, we have the right to express our opinions. Both of us just have.

After coming home, I read in the newspaper  something about that famous Mp's daughter having sex with an academic. Maybe this is the same video which I was offered, and all over a family shopping centre.

Does anyone know? Does anyone care?

I don't know, but the Thais should care that a VDO of an underage girl is on display and for sale. Thailand has tried for years to present a better image than being the sex center of the world. It certainly does not need anymore bad press on the child sex issue.

Ladyboys - what's the interest?

I think there are either more bisexual men than generally thought or many are just curious about something 'different'. Men on holiday see a chance to try something different sexually without anyone from home knowing about it and go for it. Well, TIT.

It is also treating the ladyboy like a curiousity and not the real people they are wrapped up in the package of their own chosing.  Quite distressing so many overlook that they are just people too..........

I am of two minds here. I like the fact that tasteful pictures were posted and all can either enjoy them or move on to something else. Saying that, we do tend to ojectify women and forget that they have feelings and dreams, same as the rest of us. I will close by just saying thanks for posting them.

One suggestion I do have is to start reading the Pattaya Mail online before you go. Pattaya has literally hundreds of hotels, many with websites. Do a search using Pattaya + hotels and you will see what I mean. Remember, many of the lesser priced hotels do not have websites yet. In the Pattaya Mail you will find groups and organizations that welcome ex-pat visitors and residents. Two that maybe helpful are the Pattaya Sports Club and The Ex-Pat Club. Their web address are listed in the Pattaya Mail. I would just book a moderelately priced hotel in the Lek-Apex-Diana Inn part of Pattaya. All three are decent hotel and have pools. This is walking distance to the beach and entertainment areas. Also you are right on Second Road for the bus and baht bus pick-up. Once there, network with your fellow ex-pats and they will have ideas of where to stay at a good monthly rate. Good Luck.

I agree with this comment. I am past the point where I can just pick -up someone and off we go for causal sex. I want to have feelings for or at least like my partner. I find the LBs of Pattaya are generally better educated and more fun to chat with than the bar girls. I want to heard their story of how they 'switched teams' and ended up in Pattaya. Take some time to befriend a ladyboy and when you are comfortable with them, take a chance. Thailand has to be the best place to 'get out of the box' and try a new experience. Go for it!

There are plenty of ladyboys lovers out there or the LBs working in the entertainment industry could not make a living. I had been going to Pattaya for 6 yeras before I took a LB home. I considered myself 'straight' but found out a lady with a dick did not freak me out. Somedays I take a lady home and others a LB. Does that make me 'gay', 'bi' or what? Too many of us in the West get hung up on labeling each other. We must all fit into one group or another. Sexuality is a complex thing and not easily understood even by oneself. An earlier post related a man who was married, had children and now is in a gay relationship. Did he one day wake up and dicover he preferred men? Did I spend 40 years lusting after women only to find I like women with a dick? There are no easy answers when human sexuality is the topic.

to 'bodypaul'. What is 'normal'? I spent 6 years in Pattaya thinking I was 'normal', chasing the ladies and now find I also chase ladyboys. Guess I left the normal category behind. But, that's what living in Thailand will do to you. Probably why many of us are here!!

It always amazes me where they get the money to have the op, unless they really need it to work professionally. I suppose they could always get a bank loan or finance?

I would generally agree with Mr. pedantic on this, but I have seen two katoeys in Pattaya that would fool anyone. Both were short, under 5'4, both young, under 20. No Adam's apple, hands & feet lady size, no voice giveaway, dressed in 'regular' clothes. None of the usual giveaways. The only way you would know was to have an ex-pat tell you. Or ask her to go with you and find out once in the room.
