  1. Thanks for the tip. It seems that they are just bitching about the bar and what not but never-the-less, I asked if some one could help me out.

    Later

My understanding is that the Chiang Mai German Brewey brews it's own beer, so they should be able to tell you where to buy the grains :)

  2. Had them all over my lawn in the UK. Made a real mess. Called the council and they recommended a local farmer. But in Samui you could try Bandon hospital as they have a department that deal with cosmetic surgery etc. Considered to be very reasonable by international standards. Also I believe Thai Inter Hospital opposite Tesco have similar facilities.

    Cheers.

Whatever butcher you choose, don't go to Bandon. Before the other hospitals opened, I had basic surgery over there (broken ankle). A second operation was necessary at another hospital because they connected 2 bones which should not be connected by using a far too long screw (the screw went through the right bone, then through some flesh and ended in a second bone, making that I could not longer move my foot up and down). This was noticed days after the operation by a young doctor, but he was shut down by an older colleague, helped by that ugly farang bitch which worked at the time over there (I suppose that someone finally had the courage to fire her in the mean time). The result of their small mistake was that I couldn't walk for 6 months (normal recovery time is 2-3 months), pay another 60.000 for the second operation + a trip to BKK.

  3. Just something you might want to try before heading to Samui : I suppose you mostly don't watch live TV, but recorded shows. In that case, it is very likely that you can download them to your PC using a download manager, before watching them.

This would normally speed up your downloads, but in case your hotel offers a shared line in the lobby, you can download them over there, and later watch them in your room. Also, it doesn't matter for the download manager if the speed is too slow for watching live, it just takes a bit longer to download.

  4. If you could tell us what exactly you want to watch, we could easily try it out and tell you :)

800 kbps is no problem on my line, but might be too much on shared hotel lines.

It's major league baseball that I want to watch. The service that offers it is at http://www.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index...teId=mediaguide

They have a demo video there, but it's not the same as what is shown during a real game, it's just a low resolution clip reciting the features of their service. They do have a rudimentary speed tester on their service though, which might give some indication of whether it would work at http://mlb.mlb.com/tools/bandwidthdetect/index.html . I wouldn't be surprised if that test is a bit biased towards making things look more favorable than they they can sell more subscriptions. For one thing, that's just a quick test that will tell you your line speed over a few seconds of usage, whereas the video player that they sell with this service turns out to be quite sensitive to the consistency of the line speed during the course of the game.

The speedtest gives me 1245 kbps down, and the demo was loaded in 16 seconds (it supports Bywifi video accelerator), so you should not have a problem :D

  5. ....and it's the Dutch National Day today, right?

    Gerd

Yes, and I heard that they have a lot off unsold herring this year :)

An idiot tried to crash the bus off the royal family with his car, leaving 4 people dead and several injured. They had to cancel the event.

  6. So guys according to you I would not be able to buy fresh herring in Thailand I just love pickled herring but and thought about doing it my self and not buying the expensive imported ones, any other fish avaible in Thailand I could use(similar to herring)?

I doubt it... the herring is a really fat fish, Thai fish contains less fat due to the warmer climate. But you can try the Tim fish recipe I posted above.

  7. I ordered last week all the stuff you need for cheese making in the Netherlands. Will post my experiences once it arrives.

I ordered mine (vegetarian rennet tablets) from cheesemaking dot com....they deliver swift and have regular shipping price ...i also got my cultures from them. very good and professional service,

    mbox

Did you already make some cheese ? I'm curious :)

  8. You can buy most (locally grown) exotic meats in MAKRO at very reasonable prices... around 250 baht per kilo, plastic sealed, and branded.

I don't remember the brand though... but all exotic meats there are the same brand. At the frozen meat section.

Lamb, goat, rabbit, turtle, wild boar, deer, frogs... and more!!! :o

If I remember well, the name of the brand is "lamaai" or something like that. Try their deer filet, this quality will cost you a small fortune back in Europe. (take the most expensive of the 2 deer products they have, around 500 baht/kg)

  9. I have about 5 laptops, but no desktop PC. I am not going to put one in the living room as a permanent fixture.

Didn't find any DVD recorders with hard disk anywhere - if you know of one, let me know.

I found a bunch of surveillance DVRs but not sure they'd work in a consumer setting. Cost from BHT 9000+.

Conclusion: This is not an easy thing to find. MythTV is basically what I need so maybe that plus an Acer Revo would work. Or if you have a 2008 model LG LCD TV with TimeMachine for sale, let me know :o

I saw them in Tesco, but just go to the website of any manufacturer (for instance Sony), look for a dealer in your area, and I'm pretty sure they can order one for you.

There are fortunately also external TV tuners. I bought this one a couple of years ago in Panthip Plaza and it's working well for the thb 1200 I paid for it.

  10. Nikster. what about old school, video recorders still do kinda what you want.i'm getting a lovely one for 20 quid when i go back to the UK to see the family. and you can buy the tapes at Makro.

Amazing the modern times replacements for these are apparently very hard to find.

A lot of the ones offered in the USA are part of a cable box like the PVR offered by True UBC. It's like TiVo. The PVR costs 16,000 THB at True + unspecified monthly fees (which are waived the first year). Yes True has this, it can pause live TV and all, but there's no way I want to spend that much money for a device that only works with the True service and will become obsolete once HD TV arrives here.

I don't have a PC nor do I want to put one near the TV. I guess one of those new Atom based tiny boxes would be OK. I used a TV card as TV in a hotel once - the room didn't have a real TV, only a PC with TV card. And for all the hardware firepower that went into this, the experience was just so poor. Things would occasionally not work, Windows would go do something or require attention while watching TV... it was really bad. It worked, but not well enough to spend any kind of money on it....

    Nikster,

What kind of BS is this ? You ask if this this recorder is available in Thailand, I say yes, and you reply " I know it's available but too expensive for me"

I offer a cheaper alternative, but you say " solly, no have computer" - a bit strange answer from someone who is posting on TV... Anyway, the proposed solution works well for me, seems you went to the wrong hotel...

I think I will go and watch a recorded TV program, maybe some other idiot can help you.

    Good luck!

  11. Marcus, your a braver man than I. My last time returning to Thailand, I had my PS2 in my checked baggage. My computer, cameras etc. were in my carry on, but you never would think that a game system would be something you would want to carry with you. Needless to say, after my arrival, my bags were lighter via one PS2 and accessories.

Jesus ! That's what I call bad luck ! I always carry electronics (these days mostly stuff for the kitchen which is not available in Thailand) and never had a problem. Must be that I look so cute and innocent :o

  12. Hi to everyone!

Could anyone tell is it possible to buy in Thailand a breadmaker Panasonic or Moulinex? (verasu.com has only Severin)

    Thanx!

I have been looking for years, without result. I bought my machine in the home country, but unfortunately, it died a couple of weeks ago :o Local technician can't help me, so I'm afraid I will become a customer of overpriced Verasu :D

  13. Honestly, I don't think you have to pay import taxes on these personal used items, just the way that they don't charge you for your laptop, Ipod, Iphone and camera.

Anyway, for the interest of the OP, I didn't pay a single baht on my recording studio I just put into my luggage (spread over several trips). The largest item was a keyboard. Packed in plastic with air bubbles, it was easily to recognize, and I was not stopped by the customs. Just fill in the "nothing to declare form" in the plane, act like a tourist and it's unlikely you will face problems.

  14. I used to see DVD recorders with a harddisk in Tesco Samui, but found it more convenient to build my own :o

All you need is a PC close to your TV and a video capture card (which will normally come with the necessary software, but you can download several programs for free)

    Benefits :

    * much, much cheaper (assuming you already have a PC of course)

    * these DVD recorders mostly have small hard disks, while a computer these days can have almost unlimited disk space

    * you program your recorder on a computer screen, much easier as using a remote. In civilized countries you can mostly use EPG, but that's still a dream for Thai TV

Online videorecorder : I use one and I'm very happy with it, but as far as I know, it's only available for Dutch and German speaking people.

It works like this : I connect to a Dutch website. They offer channels which are available in the Netherlands, I program this site as a normal videorecorder, and later I download this show to my PC. It's a great way for me to watch my home TV in a pretty good quality. But the only drawback is that they focus on the Dutch and German speaking market. There are some channels in other languages, but probably not what you're looking for.

  15. Hi Marcus,

I only kill cobras, centripedes and scorpions within the premises , and that's to protect me, the wife, the family and children.

You maybe can extend your simple one worded objection.....

You can easily catch a snake alive (google for it). If you don't feel secure (what can happen with a cobra), just ask someone with more experience. Centipedes are another story however...

  16. Happened to me the first year in Thailand - it was a scorpion and I got stung - no big problem.

Next time , a couple of years later I saw a snake disappear into my rubber, boot - it probably got scared when I was coming. It appeared to be a black cobra, about 1 meter long. After that I am always very cautious before sticking hands or feet into something Im not sure about. BTW the cobra was killed with a 94101.

    asshol_e !!!!!

  17. I just bought a vga (15 pin) to composite cable (red/yellow/white) so that I can connect my compaq presario laptop to my samsung hdtv.

I wonder what cable you have : VGA is "video only", the red and white composite inputs on your TV are for sound, so in fact you send the video signal of your PC to the audio input of your TV, no wonder it doesn't work !

You say you have a HDTV, so probably your TV has a VGA input too ! If so, all you need is a simple VGA cable. Just be aware that according to this thread, there are 2 different kinds of cables :o

  18. Same problem here in Samui on Maxnet Premier. However, with a proxy it works like a charm, so I don't think DNS has something to do with it.

    A proxy right?

I've googled for a way to apply the setting on Firefox, but sadly, it just seems that the pages were also showing a blank page.

I'd like to request for a simple explanation of how to set up the proxy in Firefox.

    All help are appreciated.

I'm sure a mod will reply soon :o

  19. I think this can never work due to the way Thai people think.

You say your wife is from a poor Isaan family (not original haha). The day she started a relation with you, she suddenly became "important" and your money is probably supporting half of her village.

If she suddenly starts working hard in a laundry, she will seriously loose her face as important people with rich falang husbands are supposed to watch TV all day.

The only trick you can try, is let her feel like a successful business woman : let her control some staff without her working too hard. The idea of a franchise as someone else proposed sounds good, but then she will need some qualifications of course.

Anyway, I fear that if she starts making money, she will not use it to fund your household, but buy an Iphone and a new buffalo :o
