  1. i don't think Marcus Eco friendly resort with a few wooden houses is viable to the owner.. :o

To this owner...probably not :D I don't know what he paid for this land, but I suppose far too much, so he has to build on every sqm. to make his project profitable. I remember that years ago I was offered the whole island for 30 mio and if I had bought it then, it would have been very profitable just to build a couple of very expensive houses on it (or even better, sell it to the Beckhams )

My advise to every would be developer : buy land at a decent price everywhere except Samui (for instance Koh Yao) and build something which fits on the land (as myself and many people here probably did years ago when we still could buy land at a normal price)

  2. OK, instead of attacking highdiver because you don't agree with his position and instead of bemoaning the fate of this little island, why don't you come up with some solutions instead? I'd be curious to hear what you think could possibly be done to change this outcome.

And lets please keep it within the bounds of reality, ok?

A more realistic project maybe ? I don't dispute the legal right of the owner to build a house on his land, but is it necessary to build 42 on such a narrow area?

If there would be a couple of wooden Thai style houses or a small eco friendly resort, the picture would look completely different IMO.

  3. Yes, what is the deal with premier and Indy tt&t packages? I have the 2mb package @1380 baht/month, when I asked about the faster/cheaper Indy packages...the assistant wouldn't reply. I live on the Darkside and it took years for me to get adsl, so I was just happy to get something above 52k....Why is Indy cheaper? What are the disadvantages if any?

The Indy package is designed for traffic within Thailand, and bittorrent and Voip are throttled. This is not the case with Premier, and you are supposed to have more "international bandwith". When I changed from Indy to Premier, it was certainly true, but I wonder if this is still the case... at least I read less complaints from Indy users here as one year ago. So the question is : is a 2 Mb Premier package at thb 1080 really better as a 5 Mb Indy one at thb 1000 ????

  4. When I read this topic I feel a bit sad. I can literally see Koh Som from my garden and the idea that this little spot will be completely ruined by another bunch of greedy falang makes my sick.

Curious to find out more about this project - who will find 40 people stupid enough to live on a 7 Rai island ? - Google told me that probably a regular poster on this forum is the brain behind this.

So if he can stop hiding himself and post here what will happen, it would be appreciated.

The guy you mention here is not the brain behind it, he is just consulting from time to time.

It is a Thai/farrang partnership and the developer lives on the island as well. If you wanna find out more, just PM him.

I was hoping he could post some information over here, now all we have are speculations ....

  6. Hi, I normally connect to the internet up here in Phetchabon, by dial up card. However the latest one just will not work, (TT&T are looking into it), and to be honest when they do work, it's very slow, 31.2kbps.

TT&T have said that they have there own dial up service which is 500 Baht a month, with some kind of cheap overseas phone calls built in, difficult to understand, my wife (Thai) speaks good english, but not computerspeak, and they also gave a leaflet (in Thai) about a company called Maxnet, who appear to offer 2Mbps, but there is no mention of fees(??).

Has anyone used either of these and are they any good ?

Any information is much appreciated. Thank you.

I'm happy with my Maxnet account. If you plan to download a lot from international sites (torrents etc), better buy one of their more expensive Premier accounts. Just for normal surfing and an occasional download, the cheap home package will do the job.

  7. Networks and sharing are two different matters.

Members of a network can share resources, like printers and internet access.

Whether you can see and access the files on the private computers is down to settings

    on each computer.

You may be able to see the file names, but can you see the contents of the files?

Is each private computer running a firewall, like ZoneAlarm?

This also gives you control over what outsiders can see.

    I think I found the sollution :o

There was no problem when I used Windows Networking the normal way (through network places). However, when I typed the path to another computer/file in the browser, everyone could have access to my files, even from a computer which was not in the workgroup.

The solution seems to be : go to properties of the shared folder-->sharing--->permissions, and remove the user "everyone" from the list.

  8. Hi all,

I have a small network, 3 private computers and one shared. All PC's run on XP professional, they are NOT members of the same domain and simple file sharing is disabled. I run Cisco's Network Magic Pro software as server soft on the private PC's.

The problem is that it is still possible to see the shared content on the private computers, simply by typing \\name_of_the_computer. Any idea how to solve this ?

  9. Marcus

May we suggest you read the original post - before the TV Ins reply - to put it in context ?

Yes, I did and I believe you that your product is less worse as the Siam Bank's product.

The thing is, if you buy an insurance - probably without really understanding what is covered and not - you might sooner or later end up in a position that you realize that you are not insured any more, simply because you have reached the limit of what is covered. Do you really think that everyone clearly understands what your Policy Benefits mean ? People just tend to go for the cheapest solution and will easily believe that these cheap packages have the same coverage as in their home country.

I'm very happy that this situation happened to me. The day I arrived in Thailand, I asked our local broker for a quote for a very good insurance which covers the most serious problems. She came up with an AIA insurance she thought was perfect for me, so I signed up. 6 months later I broke my ankle. Hospital bill was paid directly by AIA, so no problem. Fortunately, the butcher who calls himself a surgeon, made a big professional mistake, so I went to another hospital for a second operation. There we found out that AIA would only pay half of the costs, because I already reached the limit for that year. And we are talking about a miserable 80.000 thb now (if I remember well)

So, thanks to a broken ankle and a stupid surgeon, I learned my lesson, and returned back to the good old social insurance of my home country. OK, it costs a bit more, but at least I know that me and my family are well insured.

  10. great photo though really points out what 2 bit ho's footballers wifes are and the fact footballers love paying for sex (see ronaldo for futher information)

Eh, <deleted>? Why does this make his wife a 2-bit whore? ..and if you base the tens of thousands of professional footballers on the mistakes of one rather stupid footballer, then I suppose that makes us all love screwing kids 'cos at least one expat does. Ridiculous.

    And to other posters...

As to why does he deserve his money, football (soccer) stars still earn less on average than America baseball and American Football stars. While I have never been a Spice Girl groupie, they are no different than many boy and girl bands - all image and little talent. The only reason she still has the money is because she was wise enough to make sound investments and get good management, whereas most such 'musicians' usually blow it all believing it forever. They do do stuff for charity, but why should they give all their money away. Think of the massive payouts some Hollywood stars get - tens of millions for a single film sometimes - they raise money sure, but they don't give it all away either. Why should they? Have you?

Good points. Can't really see why people love to hate the Beckhams - but it is the fashionable thing to do it seems. What's their crime? Too rich and successful? I know some don't like the way they aggressively market themselves, but who really cares - up to them i say. Stop with your jealousy people!

Well said mate !!!!!!!!!!! my sentiments exactly ,,,, I cannot stand ANYTHING to do with football or the bloody spice girls ,,,,,,,, but give them a break ,, they may have been very lucky in life but they are a good clean living family and have invested their money very wisely ,,,,,,,,unlike some of our other high profile ( superstars ?? ) that have done nothing with their good fortune other than piss it up the wall or shoot it up their arms ,,,,,,, good on em I would love them for neighbours ,,,,,, green monsters go and eat the mozzies :o

Personally, I have absolutely no problem with my new neighbours. The BBQ David organised last weekend for the neighbourhood was great - just the strip show Justine performed was a bit over the hill ! Gary Gecko did a great performance as DJ, but he couldn't beat Mick Jagger who arrived quite late as his plane had problems again. There is only one thing I don't like very much : Posh just called to invite my wife for an afternoon shopping . I'm desperately looking for a safe place for my credit card now :D

  11. Doom and despair nearly everywhere then?

Try booking rooms as I have just done and see the response.

This is the reply I got asking for one room at the Sala, Choengmon from the 13th to 16th February 2009.

    Reduced 67%

    603 x 98 (17.62K)

yes but notice the dates ' Valetines day ' !! .. thus you will have alot over from BKK, Singapore and HK with there sweethearts :o ..

the sala is a well known hotel for these people, thus try booking a week later :D

    As requested, Boater

    post-22832-1233637874_thumb.jpg

This doesn't mean anything, as it is an automated booking engine. The management of the hotel gives the site a limited allocation, the site can freely use. If that allocation is used, it appears that the hotel is fully booked and the management should give extra rooms to the booking engine (if available). But... if you go to www.latestays.com, you can book a room at half price during this period, meaning that they have so many rooms available that they are desperate to sell it at half price. The Sala managent should have a nice talk with their reservation manager who is responsible for this crazy situation :D

  12. Anyone here using this plan.

I was offered it a few times when banking at the main branch in Pattaya.

Would like some feedback from anyone using it :o .

Compare it to the Thai Visa Insurance plans and you will find Thai Visa is better value, and in English so you can understand !

    http://insurance.thaivisa.com/medical-pack...plans-1--2.html

I'm not an expert in insurances, but this looks ok for a broken finger... Can you advise a hospital which will handle a heart attack or a tumor for this money ?

  13. If I understand well, there are 2 problems you have to solve :

    1. Control the pc with the mp3's. A very elegant solution is to use Orb (freeware www.orb.com) - server soft on the mp3 pc, and clients on any other pc you have. This way, you can not only stream your music over the network, but also movies, pictures and even TV given your mp3 pc has a TV card. It even works over the internet, so you can listen your music in a hotel room in your home country :o;-)

    2. Your laptop is connected with the stereo. A long cable to the patio is the logic solution of course, but if you find this too complicated, an FM transmitter will probably do the job (if it's not too far). For the best quality, I would go for the cable.

  14. I am dying for a good horse steak; or even better a colt carpaccio.

    post-61130-1232330006_thumb.jpg

As well, to make to perfection Belgian fries, I need some horse fat to had to the beef and pork ones.

    Any idea or suggestion?

I think there are only 10 horses in Thailand.... Anyway, most nationalities find it disgusting to eat horse meat, however I must admit that I miss it too ;-)

  15. I get a very stable 320 kBps on a 3Mbps Premier package. There's something wrong with Grr's numbers, or he has a faster package then he knows (they did do some free speed upgrades). On a 2 Mbps you can get a maximum transfer speed 256 kBps, but practically, due to error correction etc you'll more likely to see 220 kBps

I know I pay 1090 baht (plus tax) for the MaxNet Premier 2048/1024 package, but get download speeds well over 2048 (or 256 kbps). My router (D-Link DSL-2740B) reports the following:

Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4688 (DL) 584 (UL)

Rate (Kbps): 3584 (DL) 506 (UL)

which means I'm getting more bandwidth than I'm paying for downstream, and about half of what I'm paying for up. Don't tell MaxNet!

I'm in the same situation... Last June, when they did their free upgrade, I decided to change to Premier 2Mbps. Everything went wrong, and I guess that I made their techs no nervous that they gave me a 4Mbit line, maybe just to get rid of me :o

  16. I think this is an advert for slingblade media. :D

new pipes going down the ocean soon, 3 years.

Not exactly, but I've been reading about it for 18 months now and think it would be very cool to be able to plug in a box at my sister's house in the US and watch all her channels. But alas, this is Thailand........................Anyway, I don't know about you, but I would pay about 3,500 a month for Internet that actually worked, which would of course include uninterrupted streaming video at any time day or night. Maybe some Thai poo yai can develop a premium service for those of us willing to pay. Surely I am not the only one?

Assuming you are talking about a Slingbox (from Slingmedia.com, not Slingblade.com) : I have one and it works (most of the time) fine :o

If there are problems, it is mostly not with the Thai internet, but with the lousy performance on the Western side. As you stream from your home country, you need a good upload over there, which is mostly a problem. A down speed of 10 Mbit/s is normal these days, but that's completely irrelevant if we are talking about streaming. What matters is the upload, which is mostly 0.5-1 Mbit/sec. On the Thai side, the download speed should be at least the same as the upload at home, which is mostly the case - even with the cheapest "home packages". Only if you have a very fast upload at home, Thai internet might be to slow to receive HDTV (what the latest model of Slingbox is capable to do, they say an up speed at home of 1.5-2.0 Mbit/sec should be enough)
