  1. Mapguy,

Get a life. When I download it is done during the wee hours of the morning when everybody is sleeping. For your info I only download movies periodically, I mostly download UK series like Top Gear, Fifth Gear & the soaps of course. So unless you know another way that I can watch UK TV bleep, bleep, bleep......

Mapguy probably doesn't want to tell you as it uses a bit of bandwith, but fortunately I do :o

Install on your pc "your freedom" . Log in on a UK server and install "Zattoo" . If your connection is good enough, you can watch your most favorite channels Beeb, Beeb, Beeb,.....(Same same for German and French users)

    <Marcus,

Just downloaded Zattoo (you have to do it in the order Marcus describes or you end up having to delete your cookies) and got your freedom up and running no problem.

But all I'm getting is there are no channels currently available.

Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

    Cheers

My guess is that you forgot to install Open VPN (it's on the download page of Your freedom) This program will force Zattoo or other applications to connect through Your Freedom. In Your Freedom, you have to adjust some settings for Open VPN too.

Without this, Zattoo will see that you are in Thailand, so no channels available. Connecting over a UK server however, Zattoo will think you are in the UK, and the channels over there will become available.

  3. Thailand is an interesting country with their "Basic", "Premium" and "Business" plans. I don't know any Western country where an ISP provider offers the same download speed in several plans, where the most expensive one can cost up to 10 times more as the cheapest one (Manet 2Mb Indy is thb 590, Biz 2MB is thb 5900)

I think this strategy makes sense. In a developing country like this, their should be a basic package that normal middle class people can afford, otherwise internet access would be restricted to PAD members only. It is normal that there are some limitations on these cheaper packages. Restrictions on international bandwith seems logic as it cost money. All basic packages have limitations on P2P traffic, which includes Skype and Bittorrent.

Till June, I had Maxnet Indy too, and almost never used bittorent, simply because most of the times it didn't work. Then I upgraded to the Maxnet 4Mb Premier package, and if was a relieve ! Everything works pretty fast now. I'm not longer surprised when I see torrent downloads of +300KB. Expensive ? Compared with the Indy package, yes. But hardly more expensive as in my home country (where they have monthly download limits) I did the "glasnost test" and found out that my ISP isn't throttling my traffic at all.

So the bottom line is that you get what you pay for. If you use internet only for checking your mail and sanook.com, these basic packages are your thing. If you are like me, watching almost every day a movie and transmitting my home TV to Thailand using a Slingbox, then you should consider to spend some extra baht.

And for the OP : if you have one of these basic packages, calling me a "hog" will not solve your problem as your ISP throttles your traffic anyway. However, if you have a Premium or similar package, then you should contact your ISP again and again and again. When I did my upgrade, absolutely nothing worked. It took them two weeks and several calls to find out that one of the settings in their "exchange" was wrong for my account.

  4. I know that this subject has been done to death but when, if ever, will the public here put enough pressure on all those involved in this country to provide an acceptable broadband service?

The service has deteriorated significantly over the past 20 months and I can’t now even download local pages at a decent speed, even in the morning. As for VOIP calls it is getting to the stage when the only practical alternative of making calls overseas is to use the mobile phone or land line. I don’t mind paying more to get a guaranteed and satisfactory service but when reading other threads this seems to be just throwing money down the drain.

Sure, I have it :o But you will have to pay a bit more as the 600 thb packages and be prepared to spend a couple of hours on the phone with the help desk to tune your line.

  5. Everytime you log into an ISP, the ISP also records the IP address - so no matter how many times a day you get a new IP, the ISP knows its you.

Now if you run a cafe, the ISP fingers your address, then at your cafe you will need to produce additional logs to narrow it down to a particular customer - otherwise you take the blame and pay 500K in fines.

Anyone knows software which can do the job ?

  6. And you can only pay it when having a Belgian bank account!

That's the problem indeed ! I suppose they have to do it for copyright reasons and the Belgian or Dutch account is the "proof" that you are a resident of one of these countries. Anyway, I'm happy to use it. Thb 200/month is very cheap and they have my most favorite channels. I also use a slingbox, and this is a good addition to it. The quality is better and I don't have to stay awake till the middle of the night due to time differences.

  7. try siam legal www.siamlegal.com

ya, good luck :D and are they even on Samui, I mean really who and where? BTW: if you are wondering why I say that Boater, and you all, its because they have no clue what they are doing especially with regard to tax implications...but, before I back up what I say...wait, are they a sponsor of our gracious host here...like tacobelt "legal advisors"? :D

f you want truly compentent legal counsel go to BKK to one of the truly reputable firms.

first just for the for the record its competent not compentent. and as someone who assumed the role of English teacher you should know that :D

second please do "Back up" your statement" they have no clue what they are doing" regarding this firm with solid facts.

do feel free to elaborate and explain what are your qualifications to determine this statement. :D

for the benefit of our other readers and the OP who may be misled by your above defamation and slander and until you prove it and back up your statement....(you always promise but never do :o ) here is some info about Siam Legal

    http://www.siam-legal.com/company_profile/...gal-profile.php

For the record I have no interest in the above firm or have i used the service they provide, nor can I vouch for the service level....but looking at the profile of this firm it is very clear they have competent people.

I checked their website and couldn't find any Thai lawyer on it. How can you expect that a falang with an American degree can give you decent advice about Thai law - none of them seems to speaks Thai, so they can not even read a Thai lawbook ! Also, it seems they are not registered as Thai lawyers (I believe a falang can not anyway), so if you have to go to court, they will have to hire a Thai anyway.

My advise to the OP is to ask advise to Thai businessmen you know (or eventually a post on a Thai forum) Thai go to court too, and probably will know a decent lawyer, but be prepared you will have to go to BKK with a translator.

  8. A couple of days ago Slingmedia finally released their new player.

Their website says it's only for US boxes, but it works fine on my UK Classic model and the PRO.

    The good things are :

    * it buffers the stream for one hour, meaning that the player has limited timeshift possibilities now (you can pause the stream and rewind it, very much appreciated !)

    * you can now enable the slingstream for higher resolutions as the 320x240 on the previous version (so you don't longer need to do it manually) resulting is a smoother stream

    * it has an EPG, right now only for the US and Canada, so I wasn't able to test it

    The bad things :

    * you have to create an online "slingaccount", which means that the slingbox has to find your information online every time you want to connect. Deadly slow !

    * there are a couple of bugs in the soft (it creates automatically new slingboxes in your directory, it's sometimes more difficult to connect)

    * if you connect through a proxy, you have to configure it every time again if you want to use it.

All in all, I like the improvements very much, just hope that they fix the bugs soon !

  9. Anyone sure that no one was hurt????

I found out late afternoon yesterday that there was in fact someone hurt quite badly.

One of my customers has a Thai wife who had got up early to go to the temple and went to 7-11 on the way home. She had just opened the door of 7-11 when the vehicle hit the pole and her. She ended up under the pickup and caught fire when the gasoline etc ignited. She managed to crawl out by herself and with the help of a young lad from 7-11 roll in the dirt to get the flames out.

She was till strong enough and conscious enough to give her motorbike keys to the boy and tell him to take her to hospital. So with most of her hair gone, 3rd degree burns over a significant part of her body, skin falling off, she clung to the back of the 7-11 boy as he took her down the ghost road to Bandon hospital.

While this is not the best way to get to hospital it was probably the fastest and with significant burns, speed is of the essence. After taking the lady to hospital, the boy then took the motorbike to the husband and with little English managed to communicate to him where his wife was. It still amazes me the strength of Dang who must have been able to communicate where her house was to the boy while still in a state of shock etc from the accident and burns.

I met with her husband last night and he states she is stable, is bandaged from head to toe with just her eyes nose and mouth showing. They had just wheeled in the portable x-ray machine to check for broken bones etc, but it appears that there was not too much of that.

The family of the driver had been in visiting and the driver is currently with the police.

It is an amazing story of personal courage on both Dang and the boys part, and because it happened so quickly and without any ambulances etc it got missed by most people.

The husband has been in Samui a number of years, was previously partner in a bar in Bophut and had a serious accident a few years ago and spent months in Hospital with his caring wife by his side. It looks like he will unfortunately get to return the favour.

If anyone wants more details, please PM me.

Today there was the rumour that the poor woman passed away, is there anyone who can confirm this ? (hopefully not....)

There was also another rumour : the victim is my wife.... I can understand the confusion, her name is also Daeng and we live very close to that 7/11, but before you all send flowers, my wife is still alive and kicking.

  10. In a thread that was closed, someone was lamenting the fate of a friend who was allegedly beaten up. The discussion devolved into some bizarre racial mudslinging. But something important was missed.

Here is the relevant passage from the original poster:

...a group of guys were making comments to his gf. "Hey you" whisling, laughing, just being obnoxious he says. He turned to approach...

Listen, it doesn't matter where a person is from. The person who got the snot beat out of him could almost certainly have avoided all this if he had just walked on, ignoring the jeers.

It is as simple as that.

Seriously, even if it is one-on-one, only an immature person would "turn to approach" with the clear intent of confronting the person or persons "whistling, laughing, just being obnoxious."

Walk away! Who cares what anyone says to your girlfriend or whoever? You're not in the fifth grade anymore. Everyone knows that if you walk over to a group of people who have just been jeering at your woman, you must be expecting a fight (what other outcome do you realistically expect to happen? All the guys apologize and offer to buy you and your girl a beer? COME ON, if you turn and approach the people they know, and you know, that you are inviting a confrontation.)

Too bad about the guy getting beaten, but too bad he wasn't mature enough to ignore fools.

    (edit for grammar error)

    100% correct and absolutely right...

the best way.... is to walk away.

abosulty incorrect. when a man dis respects you he throughs down the gaunghtlet. u must defend your g/f's honer and challenge them to a duel

Agree ! And of course I can not be 100 % sure what these Israeli guy's said, I remember from the original post that the victim was an American Thai (so looking like a Thai), walking with a farang GF... And we all know what these kind of creeps think about falang woman with Thai man. (Ooops, who is now the racist ????)

  11. My wife gave birth 8 months ago in Samui. Honestly, if she becomes pregnant again, I think we will go back to the home country for the delivery... I prefer not to give too many details about our situation on a forum, but if the OP prefers, she can PM me.

Things you have to check very carefully are :

    * do they provide Epidural Anesthetic (not evident)

    * if so, or normal anesthetic is needed (for a ceasarian) , is it done by a qualified person ? (believe it or not : our gynecologist in one of the private hospitals advised me to go to Bangkok Hospital since their anesthesist was on a holiday, so a nurse would have to do it) Unfortunately, we went to Thai International as we thought they are OK.

    * if you prefer a natural delivery, better buy a gun you can point on the doctor, private hospitals really don't like it ! (for money reasons) In our case, Thai International performed one and we now have 100 % proof that there was absolutely no medical reason for it.

    * check if the husband is allowed to be present. It seems that this is not evident in Thailand. I had to wait outside (ok, I admit, watching my wife being operated is not my biggest wish, and here they do a ceasarian under complete narcosis anyway, so no need for me to give moral support). What was really frustrating for me was the fact that I saw the doctor all the time outside the operation room while he was supposed to be in.

  12. What wrong with Haad Rin? And the parties. You are free to go or don't go to the parties. But I don't think the problem is Haad Rin or raves.

Absolutely nothing, just a big problem with security.

A couple of months ago one of my guest came back from the full moon... only dressed in a towel !

He was attacked by some guys (Thai this time), they knocked him unconscious, and when he woke up, he was completely naked ! Another tourist gave him a towel, and a fisherman brought him back to Samui for 5000 K.

Of course he first visited the police. Do you think they helped him ?

  13. I will be moving to Thailand in two short weeks :D I have sold most of my electronic belongings, but I have a Yamaha mini-system that I adore. Elegant looks, piano-finish speakers, small size, sounds great and no dancing lights. I am wondering whether I should bite the bullet and sell it or pack it up with the other stuff I am shipping. It does not do 220v, so I am wondering if a voltage transformer would work (and be cost effective). Or would I be able to get a different power supply installed?

Here is what the power supply says: 120volts 70watts 60hz

this may sound silly, but it is quite a high-quality unit, and it will be very costly to purchase something similar in Thailand. curious to get your thoughts

    -Colin

If you adore it, bring it with you ! Yamaha amplifiers are for sale here, but I haven't seen the mini systems yet (never searched for them anyway). There are several other brands for sale here (think about 15 K for a middle class system, LG or similar) You will need a transformer of course :o

  14. Thai police break up drug ring supplying tourists

Thai police detained more than 30 people and broke up a drug ring that was supplying tourists with cocaine and Ecstasy on the island of Samui, an official said Saturday.

Working with American drug enforcement agents, Thai police made the arrests Friday, said Police Col. Ithipol Kitsuwansay. Among those detained were an Iranian suspected of leading the ring, two Turks, several Africans and a British citizen, he said.

Police also seized about 100 million baht (US$3 million) in assets owned by the Iranian, including a yacht, several gift shops and a pub on the island in the Gulf of Thailand, he said. He was identified as 38-year-old Shahriar Zarghamzade, alias Ramin Ahmani.

Ithipol said the ring was buying as much as 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of cocaine with a street value of 35 million baht (US$1 million) from Latin America each month and shipping it through Bangkok to Samui. It was then sold at parties frequented by tourists, he said.

Scores of foreigners are on death row in Thailand for drug-related convictions.

  15. However, I am sure that if you are creative enough you will be able to find some way to reach hulu.com while overseas.

    TheWalkingMan

Works perfect for me, but yes, I'm an incredible creative guy :o

  16. That did'nt take long for the "racist" word to crop up did it????!!!! :o

No, just telling it the way i see it. Simple. (ask a Thai what they think...i just did) Same Same.

    Are you a little racist??

Well in that case, most business people in KS are racists :D If we hear or see the word "Israel", we say "fully booked", try KPG.

It is a sad fact that 50 % of the Israeli's cause problems, from which 25 % quite serious ones. Has nothing to do with racism, we just try to protect our business and other customers.

I don't understand very well this attitude against Israeli people. After that we'll start to complain about russian, italians, arabs, etc.? Which country do you prefere?? Only white people? From some country only? Do you write outside your business "Israeli not Welcome"?

I simply think there is some bad apple everywhere. But not for this you can generalize a whole country is not welcome.

And, Marcus, "f we hear or see the word "Israel", we say "fully booked", try KPG. ", I think better talk for yourself and not for the whole community.

I repeat, it sounds to me like racism.

It is simple : let's say Scandinavians, Germans, French, Americans, Australians, Hong Kong, South Africa and the rest of the world - almost never problems, Israeli's : many problems. No, we don't have a sign "Israeli not welcome". But, with limited rooms in my hotel, I prefer to give the room to everyone except an Israeli - sorry, but that's a pure business decision. And if I say "we", this means I can not even provide a decent service to Israeli customers.... The car rental company we use refuses Israeli's, same same for the motorbikes and several tours.

I really feel sorry that it has to be like this : there are a lot of Israeli's visiting Thailand, but they have really to many rotten apples, like the OP found out. I also want to mention that over the years I met many very nice people from Israel, but due to the behavior of some idiots, we have to take these drastic measures.

  17. Are you a little racist??

  18. One quote was 20,000 per night for 5 nights - not including anything but rooms. I was thinking for 40 people we should be able to get a lot lower. They'll have a full resort for a whole week - plus customers before and after and they'll make a killing out of drinks and food.

The way my old teacher told me :

    20.000 per night x 5 nights = 100.000, still very cheap.

  19. Stelle and Leffe are both nice beers but I think Hoegaarden is to fruity and sweet for my taste buds. I tried that one in DK about 8 years ago and I still can remember the taste, I did not like it.

Then you didn't try the Belgian beer with chocolate taste yet (Floris Chocolat) :D Can you believe a couple of years ago someone tried to import it into Thailand :o
