  2. I have heard you can get the old hard drive to work a little longer by putting it in the freezer for a while and then installing it back into your computer and immediately unloading all your data from it.

I haven't done this myself but a Google search shows others have and some succeed.

  3. I use both free AVG and free from my ISP McAfee virus protection. They run at the same time and don't conflict. I had Norton free with my new computer before these two and when I switched to McAfee it found several trojan horses. I just don't trust Norton now.

I also use a router with a firewall and free zonealarm software firewall and now use free versions of Adaware, Microsoft Defender and a free ISP program to kill spyware. No computer problems with this setup.

  4. I am American and my wife is Thai. We have lived in the U.S. the entire time and our two daughters only speak English. They took Thai lessons for a while at the Wat but we just spoke English at home out of convenience so they only speak English now.

They are married now and I am not sure they will ever learn Thai. I think you really need to live in Thailand to learn Thai.

  5. Interesting, I know the Jews are legendary in areas of frugality, (to be polite), but I wouldn't have thought this of Christians, (ie, Christian charity), unless they really take the they who do not toil, do not break bread thing seriously, :o

I have not observed Jews not tipping in Texas. I have been to lunch with Jewish friends and my daughter and son in law have waited on tables during college and neither has commented on that being a problem with Jews.

The only people as a group who mostly do not tip in their experience in the U.S. is blacks. My daughter didn't know that and had worked her bu## off for a black family and was tipped a quarter. She told others about her frustration and they just explained to her- oh didn't you know??- Blacks don't tip. Since college students only get to work a few "waiter hours" a week- (the rest is no tip other minimum wage work time) that does hurt to spend a lot of time sevicing these customers for nothing. Later, she brought this up with my son-in law (married to the other daughter) and he said yes, its the same in New Jersey and New York too where he waited on tables while going to college- Blacks don't tip. What are the people of any group thinking when they cheat the wait staff out of a tip?

  6. We are not there yet. Just a wannabe at 57. We could be there now with the low cost of living in Thailand but if we had to go back to U.S., I probably should work another two years for better retirement in U.S. Trading for a living and/or working for Robert Half or other professional temp a few months a year would probably work too. Good question, when should we retire to Thailand? We may try 6 months there and six months here for a while to see what we want.

  7. We live in Texas where it really gets hot too. Our lab stays in our Air Conditioned house except for walks to take care of business. We only allow him to hang out in the kitchen and the front entry way where there is ceramic tile. One exception is the TV/Computer room where he has a comforter that he must stay on since we don't want him laying on the carpet. My daughter took him to the lake once where he demonstrated his natural diving ability from a boulder into the lake and swimming back to the bank -over and over again. :o

  8. If I invest to get a long term rate of return of 8%+ per year then my money should keep up with inflation and never run out with a 4% withdrawal rate. Most pension funds assume a long term rate of return of about 8% from their diversified portfolios. So it comes down to how much will I spend.

Monthly Annual Investment 4% of Investment

    Expense Expense Needed Withdrawal Rate

    60,000 720,000 18,000,000 720,000

    70,000 840,000 21,000,000 840,000

    80,000 960,000 24,000,000 960,000

    90,000 1,080,000 27,000,000 1,080,000

    100,000 1,200,000 30,000,000 1,200,000

    110,000 1,320,000 33,000,000 1,320,000

    120,000 1,440,000 36,000,000 1,440,000

    125,000 1,500,000 37,500,000 1,500,000

I can inflate to get to then year baht but as long as I have that 4% spread between my 8% investment rate of return and the 4% withdrawal rate I should have long term inflation at 4% covered and I shouldn't run out of money. If inflation is higher my investment rate of return may also be higher too. I think its critical though to get that 8% rate of return on my investments so I am going to have to have exposure to mid and small cap stocks to get that return and not just a bank account.

  9. 3 weeks in 2004. It’s hard to get away from work and I think I am going to have to retire from the current job and work as a consultant to have the amount of time we would like to spend in Thailand. 6 months in U.S. consulting and 6 months in Thailand vacationing would be nice to see if we really want to move there permanently.

  10. Public education is a big part of the answer. The government can't do everything. Almost everyone in Thailand needs to be educated about preserving the environment for the good of all Thais. Our kids had to water testing at the nearby rivers as part of school science projects, etc. Don't mess with Texas has been a big project to get those adults that didn't really care to quit trashing the environment see: http://www.dontmesswithtexas.org/

  11. Maintenance may have been perfect too. There is always Foreign Object Damage to consider too. Did a large bird get sucked through the engine? Or is it an engine design weakness now showing up after years of use? I am sure the folks from Boeing and GE or Pratt and Whitney engine manufactures will participate in the investigations and they will ultimately figure it out.

  12. Scans Vs. MRI

Computer Tomography (CT) Scans and MRIs are different and if you go for a scan the 64 slice may be what you want and the 8 slice sounds next to worthless. Here is an excerpt on the topic from The Grand Showdown: Computed Tomography vs. Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Who Will Go The Distance?

Round One to MRI, then. However, CT is currently staging a counter attack with the arrival of 64 slice CT, despite health care payor misgivings about a reimbursement rate that reflects the clinical capabilities of this technology. 16 slice CT is seen as being the bare minimum requirement to enable the modality to be used in cardiac applications, an area in which MRI has long been seen to be superior. With the advent of 64 slice CT, however, cardiac CT is now seen as a very viable means of examining the heart. The major industry players are currently competing at the very high end of CT, with one vendor offering a system that can capture the heart in 5 beats. Its image acquisition speed set to make the imaging of sick patients who have difficulty holding their breath for longer periods more feasible than the slower MRI procedure. If the reimbursement climate in Europe is to ever prove welcoming, new installed base will be created by the cardiology community as they begin to choose multi-slice CT ahead of high-field MRI, for its superior speed and, crucially, the fact that it requires less capital than MRI. This will again lift CT growth and give it the impetus to leave the replacement phase behind.

MRI is a long way from throwing in the towel, however. When this analyst has quizzed MRI product managers on this, he has on occasion been greeted with scoffing and the response that MRI will soon categorically trump CT with improved image quality and ever faster scan times.

  13. Some things that helped my wife adjust to life in U.S.

English as a second language (ESL) classes at local community college.

A job to generate her own income to spend as she pleases like paying for her own car. In her case she started working for electronics production companies but then got to work at a pharmaceutical company that she liked the most but had to retire before the company cut retirement health benefits in half. The pharmaceutical company was a clean room type production environment and they had to work in bunny suits with masks and she liked that. Pharmaceutical companies are generally very good to their employees.

A dog living in the house in our case its now a Chocolate Lab. I generally get stuck taking him out to take care of business but it keeps her happy.

Going to the local Thai temple on Buddhist holidays...

Buying Thai groceries whenever she needs it.

She got her permanent resident visa quickly back in 1970 but I am sure its longer now with the terrorist security background checks. Becoming a U.S. citizen was easy too but it took awhile because they lost her file once. We never had any help from anyone doing this. We just filled out the paper work and waited.....and followed up...they are just slower than they should be.

    Best of luck to you.

  15. Diversification of investments is the key for that much money.

Some of the Thai products that we have purchased here in Texas that were made in Thailand are Siam Cement Company Ceramic tile from Home Depot, 32 inch Toshiba (Yep, made in Thailand) TV from Costco, Farm raised Thai shrimp from HEB grocery chain, Mangosten- Costco, Thai fish sauce, curries, etc. in most grocery stores, lots of Thai DVDs. How about a private equity fund to launch more Thai businesses selling products world wide?
