I’m in the process of trying to book a flight back to the U.S. and strikes me that fares have jumped, across the board. Also, been flying Qatar back and forth (business) for a few years now and their service is dropping off, also.
I’m convinced these airlines try to rope people in for a while then cut back, perhaps hoping you’ve built up some kind of loyalty or commitment to them with miles and such. But I learned long ago, all their ‘awards’, miles, and incentives is little more than a scam.
Sorry, hope I’m not thread hijacking.... ?

Quite a few years back a novel came out here called "Private Dancer". A writer for the BKK Post, believe it was, reviewed it and said it should be handed out free to every single westerner coming into the country. One of the many occurrences in the book was exactly that, husband passed off as brother. Good, entertaining read. Still in print, as far as I know.

Don't feel bad, my Thai wife has trouble communicating with Bangkok Bank. These banks are great, until you have to go speak to someone. They're archaic.

Since you are a young Thai, if it had been me I wouldn’t have given him any info, I would have just told him it’s not a big deal. A 15-20 year old Honda and you hit it with a bicycle? Please. Unless it was in absolute pristine condition, who would care? Hard to believe he will bother getting a scratch fixed on an old car.
Quit worrying. It’s Thailand, you’re not in Kansas anymore.

The list of countries that entered into the agreement isn’t that impressive when you consider none of Iran’s neighbors liked it. Who has more to lose if things go awry? The Germans? Chinese? Russians? Of course not. It’s the Saudis, Israelis, Emirates, etc.
Obama didn’t have one foreign affairs achievement. Unless he was giving taxpayers money away, like the Paris Accord and the Iran deal. As the White House said, those are not the people we are interested in taking advice from!

Flagyl!! I feel for you. That stuff is worse than the parasite. After 5 days I said enough, and quit. Checked out clean a few weeks later.
I started eating plain Greek style yogurt; believe it’s made in Australia. I don’t care too much for it plain, but find it goes well with fresh papaya (or maybe your fruit of choice). Sometimes I add muesli to it and the fruit.
Good luck.

Whenever I see a story like this it reminds me of the movie The Graduate.

Just bought a house in the States, mostly to avoid all the unknowns (pollution, pesticides, MSG, immigration nazis, etc).

While I don’t disagree with their stance, those few trees are nothing compared to the s&#@ they breathe for 3 months every year. They should protest government inaction regarding that.
Personally, I flee during that time. But most don’t have that option.

When 3bb ran fiber to my house from the building next door they literally used a bamboo pole to hang the fiber cable on any projection coming from the concrete utility poles. No ladder needed. At one point a tree was more convenient, so, no lie, they ran the line over a branch to the next pole. I brought my wife out and showed her the wire over branch and told her if we ever lose internet and I’m not there come check this tree.
I called 3bb and spoke to a supposed manager about this but I get more response from talking to my cat than I got from him. TIT.

TOT DSL was making me crazy, dropping out, slow speeds. Every couple of weeks I had to call and bitch then it would stabilize for another couple of weeks, then repeat.
Changed to 3bb fiber when I found out it was available, and have loved life since. Good speed and stable. If you can get it, get it!

The baht was tied to the dollar circa 70s, 80s, into the 90s. I think when they let it float it jumped to about 45. That was around the crisis. I think. Memory is fuzzy.....
But when I got here in the 80s and the baht was around 25 or so, things were DIRT cheap. So don’t try to compare the rate today with what 25 was back then.

No good deed goes unpunished. They'd get nothing from Thais; they'd be lucky to get insurance money. Start handing out money at his own peril.

Simple thai like someone else suggested "mai ow" or "mai ow khrap" gives the impression you didn't get off the boat yesterday and you've heard and seen all this before. They tend to back off sooner. It's easy and tells them you don't want what they're offering. Smiling is optional, but truth is if they're a pushy $&#*@ there's no reason to be polite, and it won't matter to them.

I got tired of dealing with Thai barbers, so quite a few years ago I just decided to shave it and see how it looked. I didn't particularly care for it, though I've done it a few more times anyway over the years. Now I just use an electric razor and the shortest attachment and, guess you'd call it a buzz cut.
Try shaving it and see what you think. It should grow back. 555
One warning about shaving it, not so much an issue in Thailand, but you'll find your head is very sensitive to temperature. I find it makes me much more sensitive to cold (or air conditioning).

Pizza was around long before the Europeans invaded the Americas... Italians (who else?!?) brought the pizza to america... Only american pizza is created in america. IMHO, non-american pizza is much more delicious. I do NOT consider the products of Pizza Hut and Pizza Company as REAL pizza; just another americanized attempt to copy and of course make money...
Bon Appetit (yes, I know; that is originally French)Yes, "flat bread" of various sorts has been around for ages, first in the middle east. But most people today associate tomato sauce on pizza as being "pizza". And that didn't happen until tomatoes were brought back to europe from America. Regardless.....
I think most americans, at least in this discussion, don't consider chain pizza "real" american pizza. If you think that's all American pizza is, you've never been to america.
Did you join this topic to contribute or just argue and act arrogant?

I'm one that's not on the Heinz bandwagon. While most thai ketchups suck, I like Roza ketchup. I like Roza chili sauce, too. Give them a try if you never have.

Just a caution about "American" chocolates here, I stay clear of Mars brand products such as Snickers bars because, for some reason that's inexplicable to me, they're actually made in China and it says so in tiny print on the package labels. Never seen a U.S. manufactured Snickers bar on sale in Thailand. Do I want a Snickers bar made in China? NO!
Likewise, I think there may be a similar issue with some Hershey's products here. My wife just got a tin of Hershey's Kisses chocolates at home as a gift, and if you look at the metal box packaging, it's 100% in Thai language, and the only location listed is an address in Bangkok.
I love Oreo cookies but try to avoid the HFCS. The last time I looked the ones in Thailand are made in Indonesia, and obviously Nabisco ships HFCS to Indonesia for use in the recipe. I'd love to try an Oreo made with sugar, but maybe not in my lifetime.
I actually found some Oreos from Japan in a store here in CM, thought maybe they were made w/out HFCS. Not to be, even those had it. And they had a distinctly different taste than American Oreos.
Yep, gotta check those labels closely!

americans are in general obsessed with american foods. I have noticed over the years, that when americans meet other americans, they ALWAYS talk about the food... Especially about foods they can not get
If american food were special, I could understand, but normally it is the 'americanized' copy of a real countries' food. The only real american food is fast food (MacDo, KFC and others) And in Thailand, street food is much faster, tastier (and a lot more healthier) than american fast food.PS No capitals out of political disrespect
Who does southern American BBQ around the world? Who does gumbo? The modern version of what people around the world know as pizza was created in America, because Europe never had tomatoes. I'm sure we could debate forever that one dish is a variation of another "real country's" dish (I won't ask what that means), but to say there's no real American food other than fast food is ign....wrong.
And btw, no one that appreciates food will spend much time in McD's, KFC, etc. And keep eating that street food, with its MSG and questionable oils being used. Healthy??? I've given that stuff up because I don't trust the cook.

Thanks, but I'm in Pattaya.
I've had some recommendations for locally produced Italian sausage here, but found those I tried to be disappointing, especially if they were called hot and/or spicy. I guess hot and/or spicy mean different things to different people, but to me they just tasted bland and without a hint of fennel, oregano, etc. nor was there anything that might set your tongue aflame.
Keep an eye out at your local market, it's possible someone down there has this sausage. I put some on the grill the other night and when eating the smell and taste of the spices you mention were there. If I see them again (I usually don't go to Promenade, and Rim Pings are not consistent in what they stock across various stores) I'll get a photo of the packing.

I used to buy Sealect but found it a bit fishy last year and switched to Nautilus in Spring Water and like it better.
I knew there was another brand I had purchased before, but could not recall. Thanks for the reminder, I'll check when I go to the grocery later this week.

Another snake ID question
in Chiang Mai
Posted · Edited by bubba45
Found this tiny fellow on the walkway near the garden. Really small, this is best I could do with photos. Checked several sites and I can't tell if this is a banded wolf snake or a Malayan krait. Malayan krait = not good!! First shot shows it coiled up against the wall. I tapped it with a broom and it started moving. I left, and when I came back later it had returned to the exact same spot against the wall. I left again, then went downstairs a bit later and it had moved, but was still coiled up against the wall. I wanted to get a picture of it uncoiled, so again I tapped it with the straw of the broom. It didn't want to move, so I kept tapping it and it seemed to get really pissed and finally started moving. It sorta jumped and arched it's head up like it was looking for something to attack. It moved off into the garden. It was so small I could have easily smashed it with my shoe.
I'm assuming regardless of what it is, it was not born alone, so there's probably others? Funny thing is I've seen no snakes around here for a long time. Which I found odd. Anyway, any educated guesses as to whether this appears to be a Malayan krait?
Thanks!
PS: for the record, I'm in Mae Rim, just outside Chiang Mai.
