  1. From a member 20 minutes ago:

Thai news reports bomb attack at Victory Monument.

An unknown man was seen throwing two bombs in to crowds of people. The protesters tried to apprehend the assailant but were shot at it.

    Source was Nation TV.

More reason for the guards to be permitted to be armed.

Do people seriously expect the protesters to whistle at an armed attacker? I hope they get him and expose him for what he is.... A THAKSIN paid terrorist.

That has yet to be proven and is almost too simple to be true. It may have been paid by the one who is paying Suthep these guys are devious as hell and there are many diifferent faction. We always want to believe some simplistic black and white picture as it tends to be more in the west but this is asia and much is hidden from view here.

  2. Just to let everyone know. You do not need an excuse for a new Passport

Just go to the US embassy and apply They are very happy to help.

New passport you will not have any problem getting  tourist visas

In fact if they ask why you want a new passport you can tell them because you have too many Thai visas they understand about that
  3. As I recall when Thaksin was prime minister he behaved more like third world banana republic dictator without much regard for democracy and it was a bit of a relief when the army ousted him. I was kind of proud of them for staging such a skillful bloodless coup. If anything the army should be laughing at such hypocricy coming from the lawyer of a ruthless dictator?

The military is central to the culture here and has been for a thousand years so its not easy to simply step aside and allow selfish civilians to have their way every time. I think they dont like Suthep as well but are tring to follow a very difficult middle ground and I think they deserve some credit.

The lawyer should keep quiet as it only increases the hostility against YL

  4. Reds are in the most political favor in my area, as the rice Farmers want a slice of the political pie, but they are not the wild eye radicals that you are accustom to seeing demonstrating in Bangkok.

Civil war, I think not, I would be more afraid of a civil war in the US as a result of Anglo's becoming a minority, than a like war in Thailand.

While I am not a backer of the Red Shirts they have the backing of those that matter politically in my area and my opinion does not matter in a country I am a guest in.

    Cheers

Why would there be a civil war in the us if anglos became a minority ? I have always felt safer in racially mixed areas, its the all white areas that scare me.
  5. So I have been trying to download a 1.5 gb file for some time now with no luck as the file gets corrupted or broken due to bad quality wifi networks in Chiangmai. Have also tried dtac wireless broadband which is even worse. I also use a download manager that was recommended by the company (igetter) that supposedly can resume the download if it breaks but in fact it cannot resume the download.

I think if I could just get to a very fast wifi connection or better yet a broadband cable connection I could get this download finished. Any suggestions where such a public connection exists in Chiangmai?

  7. My retirement extention began on december 17 and I went for my first 90 day report on march 4 which is 13 days early. The officer stamped in on the paper that I should come back again on june 4th so would I be late if I showed up 180 days after the visa began? Are they counting from the last 90 day report of from the first day of the visa? I probably will go on or near the 4th anyway as I want to leave town but what happens at the end of the year if you are 15 or more days short?
